My grips are loose at the butt end

I just regripped a set of clubs for a guy and put black Golf Pride Tour Velvet Midsize grips on and he came back to me the next week and said the grips stated coming loose at the butt end. When he brought them to me I could see the the butt end of the grips was completely loose. I pulled the grips off and put them back on and they are still loose at the butt end. Can anyone tell me why they came loose in the first place and why they are still loose when I put the grips back on?

What the core size of the grip you used and what was the shaft diameter? Sounds like the core size for the grip was to big, which would mean the grip never gripped the shaft.

I made sure that the grip size was .600 because the shaft size is .600. The grips were tight for a few days, then started coming loose. And when I go to put them back on, they are still loose even after letting them sit for 3 days.

Did you use double sided tape? If so, what type of solvent did you use and how long did you wait before trying to twist the grips.

When pushing on grips it's normal for the grip to compress in length somewhat. You need to compare the installed length against a new grip to make sure you pushed it on all the way and avoided this condition. If you don't, the grip end may try to push back and cause the issue you note.

Yes I used double sided tape and Brampton HF100 solvent from Golfworks and gave it a full day to dry before twisting the grips.

Look inside the open end of the grip and you'll see the actual size of the grip - something like 60R or 58R, etc.

Depending on where you bought these, maybe you got sold some large-core grips and weren't told.

In the past, I've intentionally purchased some .620 core grips, but then knew to build up with extra tape to get the size I wanted.

Lots of things that can be going wrong: improper taping, wrong type of tape, grips not clean on inside, shafts not clean and dry under the tape, grips not firmly seated (rubbery knob) are a few that come to mind. Without seeing you do the install, it's really hard to tell what is going on. Grips that are loose at the butt and then are taken off and re-done almost always are never really clean and you get junk pushed to the butt end and is just exacerbating the problem. Maybe provide a [b]real detailed[/b] description of what you did and how you did it would help us.

Sometimes there's an 'edge' in the interior of the grip cap that can catch and not allow them to get seated all the way

I always tamp the grip on a towel on the floor, just to make sure it is seated the whole way. 2 or 3 times only.

It sounds like you used too much solvent. The same thing happened to me years back when I switched from mineral spirits. HF100 is a water based solvent which means it dry's instead if evaporates. You would think that a full day would be enough to dry but if you use too much, it takes several days upwards of a week. I had three customers in a row come back with the problem you describe. If you didn'y get the grip all the way down, it would still stick well, it would just have some flex on the butt cap. Using too much solvent is most likely what it is. Use as little as possible, a few squirts in the grip and one squirt on the shaft, spread all over with your finger and then install grip. It will only take roughly 30 min. to dry.

my driver grip is somewhat loose about a quarter inch from the butt end.. def has some wiggle. is that the same problem?

My experience says this is a common issue with GP Tour Velvets. Not with everyone I ever installed but with more then other grips. Usually one extra wrap of tape on the butt will stop the problem.

when I removed the grip (did last night) the butt end was still wet - probably used too much mineral spirits?

just re-gripped (with new grip) using less ms - but can already tell going to be loose (again)

Too much solvent. Another reason that I always will use mineral spirits

I've had this happen to me many times when I've changed out grips.

What I found that worked for me was to make darn sure that the grip was ALL the way on. I would push with the palm of my hand against the grip when it was slid on and put a lot of pressure on the butt end while the shaft is in the vise. I would also use a nail to punch a hole in the grip tape that covers the end of the shaft through that drainage hole in the grip. And the last thing I would do is invert the shaft and bounce the newly installed grip end of the shaft off the floor a couple of times. Not too hard as the shaft itself can cut into the grip by doing this.

If I've followed all those steps above, the problem of the loose butt end of the grips has vanished.

Remember we don't want any loose butts out there !!

I've been using mineral spirits without fail for well over 15 years ... It's cheap and easy to pick up at Home Depot.

grips stay tight due to adhesion or constriction. The solvent is supposed to evaporate. Some non-toxic grip solvents take longer to evaporate compared to paint thinner.

I've only had this problem when using the odorless mineral spirits. I hate that crap and will never use it again. I've been using Zippo lighter fluid for the better part of two years since an old man clued me in. I think naptha is the same thing so there's that too.

Really guys. Remove grips and tape from shaft. RE-tape shafts, then re grip with new grips. Problem solved.

Brampton solvent is too oily.

Start again, use white spirits.

Gator Callaway understands, using (zippo, even better) lighter fluid is the only way to go when installing grips.

Ronsonol lighter fluid leaves a gooey mess at the ends of the grip for whatever reason, just saying. And Zippo is the official fluid for lighting my L&M Blues

Varsol is a cheap alternative, as well as camping fuel. I used the water based for 2 full months at my proshop, and had all sorts of problems with it. Never again.
