Yeah good point about the ferrules being half there.   The red plugs still are rare for that year.

I am  confident on the  1960 heads per the extract from Kaplan. I interested to know what the shafts are? Kaplan says Staff Pro. If reshafted at some point it would explain the apparent discrepancy with the ferrules and colour of the sole plug.

Could also be a reissue, Wilson did a fair bit of that business in the 80s and 90s. 

 

The R500 narrows the time frame.  The 100 and 500 subflexes of DG were eventually phased out.  I'm not remembering when they disappeared exactly.

I think that's your answer. Very hard to preserve / swap ferrules if reshafting especially early ones which are frequently made up of multiple individual rings and may also be very brittle.

Almost no chance if heat required to extract the old shafts.

Arrgh! I didn't think of reissues! Looking again the hosels look shorter than the 1960 catalogue and looks like 2 rings with no knurling between.

I have no idea if Wilson reissued this model so would need to defer to the Wilson guru's here.

I find MacGregor reissues problematic too!

I had a set of re-issues that I had never hit that I sold in the spring...I have lots of pictures, so I can help you get to the answer. If they are re-issues, they are nothing but awesome and you should be thrilled to have them. They are as nice as any set of irons I have ever seen. I loved mine and dragged them around the country for almost 40 years before I finally sold them, which I only did because they were regular shafts and after all that time I realized I wasn't going to re-shaft them. Instead, I sold them for $500 and I've used that money to fund my year's worth of purchases, including a set of original '60/'61s in very good shape.

 

I bought mine around 1984. They made a very limited number of sets and my boss, who was on Wilson's staff, was allocated one set of S300s. When they came in with R400 shafts, he raised hell and the Wilson rep came by with the right shafts for him. I was sitting in the shop when it went down, the rep said he needed the R400s back, my boss said sorry, he already sold them; the rep was pissed, but what could he do, the clubs were gone. I, of course, knew they were in the back room. When the rep left, my pro turned to me and said "Stephen, you want them?" I always intended to re-shaft them, but I had a new set of Staffs in my bag and I was poor, so I never got around to it.

 

I'll post a few pictures of mine to see if that helps. If it has the second shaft band you see on mine,they they are definitely re-issues.  Let me know if you need more pics. You should be really happy if they are the same set I had.

I had in interesting spin around some thrifts I haven't been to in a while. I first grabbed a laminated '60s staff driver and 2 wood for the shafts, but after getting them home and looking at them for a bit, and realizing the driver was the same year as my '67 Dynapower irons, I think I will refinish them and see how they play. I haven't painted a club yet, so I'll have some learning to do, but I think I'll give it a shot. I also grabbed a Toney Penna TP Special driver, but it had a price tag on the face and I didn't realize it had be reworked a bit in the face; the heal has some epoxy fill and it seems like it has been re-shaped. I'm not sure what I will do with this...I already have 2 TP Specials, one in pristine shape and one of this model (aluminum insert) with epoxy fill in the toe. I stashed it in the basement and I'll figure it out later, but I can't see putting this into play and I don't think I can sell it if the face has been reworked. Oh well, it was only a couple of bucks.

 

The find of the day is this 1952 PowerBilt 3 wood. It has been refinished, poorly, but there is enough there for me to take a shot at bringing it back. The screws are wrong, which I can fix, and the top stamp is over sanded, which if I can't bring back I can replace with a decal. But the club is still there, still cool, and I'm looking forward to hitting it. I especially like the back weight.

One other way to tell if they are reissues is to look closely at the Wilson script - the S and the O are connected on the originals and separate from each other on the reissues.  In the attached picture the lower iron is an original Buttonback and the upper one is a reissue.

Haven't spent much time in this forum in the past, but have recently really liked the idea of building a vintage set that I can put in play. Already appreciate all the knowledge I've found here. Found these on Facebook and went for it. Are these 1973 or am I way off 🙃 either way I'm STOKED!

Those are plenty nice...and so much better than my 80s Staffs that I wore the grooves off of. There is a ton of life left in those and they will hit the ball just as well as something just out of the box. Enjoy those fine sticks.

I am new to Power Bilt, they are not that well known here in the UK but based on comments on this forum I realised it was a gap in my collection that I needed to plug.

It took a while to find a set but I managed to assemble the first set pictured below about a month or so ago. Irons are i believe 7292 model?

However, like buses, another set came along so I have these 1953 models coming.

My knowledge of Power Bilt remains limited so any information or comments would be welcome?

Love those early 1950’s Super Powerbilt stainless irons you have.  I hand been looking for a set for ages.  I’ve never seen a set come up on eBay though.  Very hard to find.

Latest additions are a 653 EoM driver and 3 wood.  The driver has been worked on at some stage and has seen a lot of high toe hits, the 3 wood was totally original including the serial number.  I have a Dave Bass restored 653 EoM driver thru 5 wood set and a few other 653 EoM's all of which have gone to lighter colours when restored.  I'll clean these up but keep them in black.

I'd say those are in very collectable condition.  Very nice.

 

Sometimes when irons are displayed in front of a window the sun will bleach the color out of the Fluid Feel rubber plug in the sole.  A red Sharpie fine-tip in permanent ink does a wonderful job of restoring a nice bright hue.  It lasts very well too as it seems to soak into the material.  It's a ridiculously obvious solution to the problem but I must admit it didn't come to me right away.  Gettin' soft upstairs I guess...  lol

most of the comments here seem to think these weren’t as in as rough of shape as I originally believed them to be.
