A friend of mine is the co-owner of Perrin so I'm partial to their brewery but the Mitten has fantastic beer. A mutual friend is one of the Brewers there and hooks up Growlers at our summer parties. He makes a peanut butter beer once in a while, he said he hates it because of the cleanup but it's dang good.

The Score on the North side if GR has Palm trees in the summer and 126 beers on tap plus bikini Volleyball leagues
Sooooo, with friends as brewers and the fact you spend most of your summer watching bikini volleyball how do you have time to play golf.

KBS is terrific. But really the only Founder's beer I get excited about.
I love founders. Dirty bastxxx and all day ipa are great. Their tap house in gr has all kind of other greatness.
I don't like All Day - but I am not a big session fan. I am not a DB fan either. Centennial is just ok to me. I have been to the tap house a few times and had some solid beers. But Bell's is my wife and Shorts is my Mistress.

I know my opinion is biased, but I think Kzoo beer scene beats GR with Bells. Arcadia, and places like Gonzos, Boatyard, and Lattitude 42. I like Perrin, Founders is ok, and not a fan of Vivant (although the brewery is really cool).
Not including Shorts because I like them a lot but the rest of your statement I am on the opposite side of you. now I haven't been to Gonzos, or Latitude 42 and Boatyard but Arcadia doesn't really do anything for me and Bells has a few beers I like. Two Hearted and Black Note are fantastic and Hopslam and Expedition are both really good but I think they make a lot of mediocre beers. I love Founders seasonal and speciality offerings. Not to mention mainstays like All Day and Porter. I always have a good time at their tap room too. Vivant always has good beers on tap but I think a lot of their canned beers are just ok. The Mitten is pretty cool and I think Perrin is awesome. The Original Hopcat is has lost some luster because there are more locations now but it still adds to the beer scene.
itw and I share a brain when it comes to MI beers, though I think I'm a bigger Short's fan than he is. Short's is hands down my favorite brewery in the state.
All Day and other session IPAs have a place, if you ask me. Especially since they started canning All Day. It's great for the golf course when you want to drink something with flavor, but don't want to be whiffing on the back nine. Also good for tailgating and other marathon drinking situations. Flavor-wise, I actually like them a lot, because they're usually less syrupy than some IPAs (some regular IPAs like Two Hearted, Centennial and Huma get that balance right, but a lot of others don't) and allow more of the hops to shine through.
I have never had anything from Arcadia that I would consider better than okay. Vivant's retail beers are decent, but I happened to go to the brewery the day of their Wood Aged Beer Festival, and I'm now a fan for life.
If you're up in TC, check out Brewery Terra Firma. What they're going is really cool, and they make some good stuff.
The two places where I signed up for KBS came through in a big way, and I managed to snag 6 bottles. Going to celebrate my SB-1s with one tomorrow for sure!

I'm with you on most points here. Session IPA's just don't make sense to me. If I wanted less alcohol in my system then I would just drink one less beer and have a little more water instead. Don't dilute my IPA's!

Kzoo scene is great, but can't knock GR either. I have close ties to both places, and both put out great beer.

Traverse City has an up-and-coming beer scene as well. I was a judge in a the TC IPA championship last fall, one of the beer week events that take place every November in TC.

On a side note, I will be heading to Asheville, NC in a couple weeks for work. Last year it tied GR for the 'Beer City USA' title. I'm planning on getting a few holes of golf in while I'm there as well, and will report back on the results.

After that it's on to Naples, FL for a few more days of work at our facility that we share with Harley Davidson.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this trip is all for the development of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it's really more about the beer and golf right?
Wicked Weed, Olde Hickory, Foothills and NODA( Hop Drop and Roll is awesome) are some NC breweries to look into.
We're doing this same trip for the 2nd year in a row, and I distinctly remember wicked weed being excellent. I also like the bier garten. Not a micro brew, but great beer selection. We took a 2 hr detour there a few yrs ago from a 'tale of the Dragon' sport in mode trip once we found out we were in a dry county, and it was awesome to see so many state fans in an Asheville bar...there were literally 40-50 people there with sparty gear on!

I think it all really comes down to exposure. Shorts does an awesome job at getting a lot of releases out in distribution which I can try either in bottles or on tap. Which is why it is my second favorite.

I also don't many types of styles - I don't enjoy Ambers or Porters. I like Pales, IPAs, ESBs, and Browns. Stouts are always a mixed bag for me.

I have been to Vivant three times - never bought their canned product - and I have not a beer yet that I have liked. Perrin is really good. I have never been to the Mitten.

I go to Bells/Arcadia quite a bit and so that enables me to try many things from there others have not.

Arcadia's Nut Brown is one of the smoothest, but full bodied browns I have had. Their Double IPA (Hopmouth) and Witsun is a terrific wheat beer. Their ESB used to be really good, but they changed something when they went to bottling and now I am not a fan.

I agree that bells makes some beers that are not good. 1/2 of planet series have been bad beers, but the others have been amazing - Mars was an incredible DIPA.

All-Day IPA is Gross. I hate it. It is like drinking grapefruit juice.

The gear shifter now is so weird where it doesn't move just lights up the R D P on the dash. I thought I was gonna put it in drive on accident and roll through the side of OW's garage.

My wife constantly puts it in neutral thinking it is drive in her grand cherokee. It needs more tactile feel as you switch through the gears.

See, I think Witsun is absolutely terrible, and Hopmouth falls into the trap of a lot of double IPAs and it's really syrupy and overly sweet. But Arcadia has to be doing something right to get as big as they have. That's what's awesome about the explosion of craft beer -- if there's something you don't like, there's 80 more breweries who have a different take on it. As long as no one tries to tell me Oberon is any good anymore (it used to be great, but for the last 6 or 7 years, they totally messed it up), we won't have a problem. :)

Can we still talk golf in here? More courses opening up, CC's middle of next week around here although the forecast doesn't look too good. I've been getting after it, 5 rounds on 4 courses after today/tomorrow. Conditions are getting much better, just need the greens to grow so they can be cut.
