Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

I have, but just once. I don't know what the actual loft of it was, the guy who let me hit it claimed it was analogous to a 7 iron. The shaft was softer than the flex I was playing at the time, so I had to keep the swing under control a bit.

Trajectory was incredibly low compared to what I was used to. And, it flew about as far as a 7 iron for me, maybe a touch more; hard to get a good read on that.

That was my lone hickory shot. :)

There are a LOT of guys in the Classic Golf folders that play hickory regularly. Some play it exclusively. It's a different world than the "regular golf" world, and even considerably different than our own blade-centric version of the golf universe.

I actually learned to play with a hickory shafted 10 iron in my back garden back in the 80's - probably a bit long ago to give you an idea of feel however.

Interesting chat on the definition of blades, must admit I'd always looked at it more simplistically i.e Blades or Cavities (or my preferred nomenclature, Blades or Spades :)), but will definitely concede that products such as the MP5 or the recent Yonex model do blur the edges ever so slightly.

First of all, buying a car to match your irons has to be pinnacle of ho-dom, no? Like still trying to wrap my head around your disease LOL.

Blade haters will be quick to point out we are all playing forging clubs and if you are such a purest then why not play basically a flat piece of metal on a loft angle a la tom Morris style irons. I think that blades have been mbs for longer than blades, no tthat it matters, and the degree of muscle movement varies. Are my mp14s GI for moving weight away from the toe and thus weight manipulated? Johan made them first and I bet everyone called those blades back then, or just irons hahaha.

I think it is as easy as this. Solid design, manipulates weight of course, but not in an attempt to put weight at the perimeter. Design principle os for feedback and control as an objective.

Keep it simple. Or simply, I can't really define a blade, nor do I particularly care to make some kind of technical line in sand, but I can tell you this, with that in mind I can look at any club and tell you if it is a blade or not hahaha. Of course, ymmv......

And to no catchy's point. To me, Blades golf is about a mentality, not about a club. It is a mentality that says your money where your mouth is that you know you shoot your best with your swing, and vice versa. You believe in feedback and digging a swing out of the dirt. You are the kind of person that finds a green and someone says nice shot but you know it wasn't. You are happy to take the result, but it could have easily been a bad break as well. You subscribe to golf having sooooo many variables that effect score, from lies, to bad kicks to wrong hole for a hook, to right hole to miss way right, to a good shot that balloons, or a bad shot that kicks hard and is good in the end, it is infinite, and you know that in the minuscule differences of conforming head designs, you value feedback over 3 yards closer chip on a missed 5 iron.

Or something like that....

When I was learning to play as an 11 year-old, I had a blade 3-iron and 8-iron from different sets. I took the 8-iron and a couple of balls with me whenever we went on family holidays for a couple of years just in case there was an area where I could hit a few shots. One year we stayed on a farm that had a 'games room' in one of the barns. In the corner was an old hickory shafted mashie (5-iron-ish) which I took into a field with my 8-iron and hit some shots. The hickory was very whippy and harder to control...shots out of the middle flew as high as my 8-iron but not quite as far. The feel was something else though...

Dude, I find that highly ironic given that your own baby blade love, in this thread mind you, is what motivated me to investigate bbs in the first place. Your baby blade journey was the ember that lit the wildfire love in me for them. So LOL if you can't wrap your head around it, note that I wouldn't be half the ho today without you! Heh, it's not the wedding anniversaries that are troubling me, it's the 12 months discussing what decorations we're having on the tables that is going to do it for me :)

Oh crap, yes, I remember that. Good luck with that. Just agree with whatever she says, but sound committed!

So glad that my lady doesn't want to get into the weeds about all that decor crap. She just wanted an open bar and our good friends...and I didn't even have to put that into her head!!

Sooo, as I try to wrap my head around your car matching clubs Honess, It is only fair that I disclose something hilarious about my own issues with ho'ing.

I clicked on your link.....I have actually bought irons from shinji_dayo...... wait for it..........TWICE!

Hahahahaha. Believe it or not, I looked at my account and I have about 20 yahooauction japan purchases.....

Here is the deal with him. He gets a lot of good boutique stuff. He never shows faces but I learned that no one in Japan browns faces, so I am actually cool with not seeing them. He sells at reasonable prices, I sweat a lot of his auctions, but there could be an outlier ding or problem not disclosed, which is mega rare for Japan. He is more a volume guy and I don't feel it is bad intent. My roddio shafts on the onoffs I got from him, one had bad scratches, like violent in the 5 iron. It was either him, or my proxy company opened his box with a hacksaw and hit it? Shaft played fine and I regret not pulling them as best ever carbon shafts, I just didn't know any better at the time. I think they were him because I paid less for the set by a hundo or so than the shafts go on there used for so no complaints.

Okay, carry on, nothing to more see here........

OK, so I went to my local second hand store again today because yesterday I noticed they had a 3i-PW set of MP-33s with Modus3 Tour120 X shafts...very tasty.

So I was hitting a few shots in the net, and really loving the feel of these clubs, when I decided to compare the at-address look with a set of MP-4s they had lying around. I had always thought the MP-4s and MP-33s were similar in looks and feel, but wow, what a difference at address. The MP-4s have a much smoother transition from hosel to face than the MP-33s, which in a side-by-side comparison look really offset.

Up to that point I was pretty much sold on the MP-33s, but now I'm not so sure. It's not like I really need another set of irons, and I should be saving my financial ammo for some Miuras.

That said, I did ask them to put aside an M2 3w with a nice Crazy shaft in it for me to consider at a later date. I'm falling out of love with my 4w (it's me, not her), and I have been looking around for a replacement.

Small update on the SuperDeep....

Received my F1 85 shafts yesterday. Since so many used the 85 as a fairway wood shaft, I thought I'd check the new shafts vs the one installed in my SuperDeep, see if it may have been tipped.

Sure enough, the shaft in my R9SD was tipped an inch.

Guessing it's going to be on the stout side. LOL

Toying with throwing the tipped shaft in my R11s fairway wood and putting something else in the R9SD, though I have to give this thing a shot, first...

According to a Japanese site I looked at a while back, Rextar MT-401s were a high quality series that came out in the early nineties in Japan aimed at advanced players.

I thought the Rextar series itself started earlier, though. Anyway, nice looking blades.

Yes the Rextar are forged although they are not soft like an Epon. They were a typical Japanese design with fair offset for a blade and a thin topline. I have a rare set of forged be-cu Rextars. I will post some pics soon.

How do these perform?

That Hogan set is gorgeous and yes Par-net-birdie its design has been copied many times over.

So Operation Porn Star blades is underway and now phase 2 is complete. I have paintfilled the #6 and 9 and also I filled in all the stampings with 20 min epoxy. If you look at the zoom of the 2i, you can really see how the epoxy filled everything in. Now I don't ever have to worry about dirt getting into the stampings. Enjoy the pr0n!

Sorry to hear about the job.

When you get another job, what ya gotta do if you're going to go the credit card route is get a credit card with reward points and take advantage of the introductory interest free 12-18 months. With the rewards points...you buy her something.

Clubs are clubs. You are starting a family and sounds like on the job rebound. These are not the times to buy an unneeded hobby luxury, especially on a CC for god's sake! That isn't "wussing out", that is intelligence prevailing. Do your home thing, and get your career on track. I remember having less money than my current bag is worth used in our savings account with 2 babies at home. Do life right, and when the time comes that you can truly burn the money on something special yet trivial, it will be infinitely more special and tangibly rewarding to you than if you got them on a CC tomorrow. Believe that.

As mentioned by others, sorry to hear about your job. But LOL it sounds like your biggest hurdle towards getting a set of BBs is "management". Maybe you could parlay your situation into becoming a stay at home dad, take care of the kid, become her personal masseuse (w/happy ending for her), look for a job, and once landed your reward is a nice set of BBs.

It'll all be worth it. Trust me.

Only just ok in my experience.

The set I have is quite light feeling as I think is common in the Japanese market in the past. Therefore thin shots feel harsh and I found it hard to find the sweet spot easily. Perhaps the set up specs did not suit me too well. They are however a quality bridgestone iron so when set up to suit I'm sure they are a good iron.

Yeah those are gorgeous 68s. Love the white line on the face too. I picked up a Maltby DBM head recently that has the same thing and its quite nice to square up with.

Looking for an older set of Mizzies to tinker with myself right now. Debating between MP14s and TN-87s. I like a little more square on top of the toe, thin top line, and a little offset is ok.

Yururi Flatbacks are still in the bag though. Keep trying to kick them out but I've just become so comfortable with them. Such an enjoyable club to play.
