I've been fortunate enough to play 5 rounds at Augusta. Every time on someones else's dime. While it is extremely special i would not spend the 5K. I think anyone who did would be disappointed several weeks after the round.

I agree. However, I am curious. Is your view be based on course condition and not being able to play the same tournament tee's?
Course condition is always perfect. According to my host, the only thing that changes is the green speed. They go from 13 stimp (reg for members) to 14-15 (tournament). I was able to play tournament tees. I played them in 2012. When i played my 2 rounds this year, I choose to play from member tee because wind was 20-25 and temp was 40°
Interesting... a friend of mine has played there as a guess of a one of our mutual clients, who is a member. He was surprised to see fairways were not nearly as tight as during 'the' tournament, and told he had to play members tees, and tournament tees are typically closed. Go figure. Anyway, thanks for sharing. :beach:

Augusta, to me, is a unicorn. That mythical beast that just can't be captured. It fills my mind with a flood of memories, watching it with my grandfather when I was a kid, and with my friends now. It's almost too perfect, to a fault. And part of me wants that feeling to remain unbiased.

Given the opportunity to play it for that kind of money, I would pass. I think I would use the money to play golf with my friends and watch it on TV, like I always do during Masters week.

I can't wait for the Unicorn to show itself again this year.

Now, would I play it for free? Immediate instinct is to say yes, with the notion that I would have to be invited and I wouldn't disappoint someone by declining. But, something in me still believes in unicorns.

With $5,000 you can buy a mighty fine Curved Big Screen with sound system, and have enough left over to invite friends over to enjoy some fine single malts and expensive cigars while watching golf when you want. Add a few grand and you can cross the pond to enjoy some real links golf and fun pubs.

This is the thing for me -- you could have a much more memorable experience that is a much better value for that kind of money. And paying $5k for a single round of golf would negatively color my memory of the experience. If it was a situation where you could donate $5k to a worthy charity and play as a benefit, that's something that would make me think about it, but simply paying $5k to play is a non-starter in my mind.

Yep... Its amazing how quick people are to say - sure I'd spend 5k on.... The amount of wealth needed to feel as though one can spend 5k for 18 holes, is beyond comprehension for most on Golfwrx. Sure, its easy to say, but when someone has to earn the wealth to afford 5k for a round, bucket list or otherwise, what they fail to realize is their judgment changes along the way, as well as value of the dollar.

Yes. I'd save $100 a month for 4 years to play Augusta.

just the same as i'm not all that interested in playing pebble unless i'm the guest of somebody else.....there's just so much more good golf out there to experience that i don't think it's worth it. we have the means, and i still wouldn't pay that much.

as mentioned you could fly across the pond and hit about every links in the open rota for $5k.

I voted no...but as some others have stated - if money was no object for me...if I was a multi-millionaire, then probably. But then maybe I could be a member :taunt:

This is one of the more intriguing topics I've seen in awhile and I love the variety of responses. I would think that much of the answer would depend on variables in a person's life (disposable income, values, family, etc).

For me...it's always been a bucket list item and I've spent similar amounts of money on vacations previously (longer trips, but for a vacation "experience"). Playing Augusta is an experience I never thought I would have the chance to have...so yeah, I could see myself justifying it.

What's interesting is that I used to value tangible goods over vacations and "experiences" in my youth. Now I tend value the experiences...

No way. $5,000 is enough for a full membership at a local club (used to hold a PGA Tour event) for two years. Has golf, tennis, swim, and gym.
