Would you spend $5,000 for a round at Augusta

Recommended Posts

No question. Tomorrow. I'd donate another $5k to a charity of the hosts choosing as a sign of appreciation. There are a few courses I'd love to get the chance to enjoy and ANGC, Cypress, and PV are probably the only 3 I'll never get the invite to. I've been fortunate to play many of the Top 50 but you couldn't put a price on these three for me. At $10k the experience alone would be a bargain.

Haiku as a sig?
They may be overrated
But I'm rocking one!

Good question... answer is yes and I would pay 15,000 total if I could invite the other 2 players
This is a good point. Bringing three buddies along would make me reconsider, depending on price. The experience and lasting memories would increase exponentially if you could bring your regular golfing crew.

YES! Been to Pebble, Whistling Straights, Medinah, Oakmont, Riviera, Torrey Pines, PGA National, PGA West….etc etc…… NOT 1 even came close to the feeling I got when I've been on the grounds at the Masters.

Agreed....Oakmont and Merion has a nice buzz going on, but nothing like that Masters high

Yes. I've probably spent $5k on Cokes and hamburgers in my life and don't have any great memories from the expense.

I love playing golf, but there is no way I would pay that for a round of golf. I don't don"t care what course it is. I don't really get all that emotional about golf tournaments and courses.

If it was 54 holes plus 18 on the par 3. You can stay in the cabins, it pats for air fare, I can bring a guest. Then yes
1) Practice 18
2) Par 3
3) 36 Holes
4) Par 3

Otherwise I can't justify paying that much. I understand its the course to play. But at the if day like other high in courses unless I get 36 holes to play (1 to learn, 1 for score) its not worth my time to go shot 90

I would have to seriously think about it and depending upon how much planning time I have in advance to see what other home priorities arise for the funds.

I am leaning towards the "very likely to say yes" side just for the experience. I could care less about being able to say I played there. I would care more about the experience of walking the course and hitting shots that I have been watching all my golf life. Well, maybe not the same shots but the tee shots, the approaches and knowing what I "should" do and then trying to do it and create my own little roar to myself.

Chipping and putting there after seeing it so often would be incredible.....just to get a real feel for what it is like.

It is a high price but for once......I think it is worth considering.

It is hard to rationalize $1,250/hr entertainment.
4 hour round?!? My five-some walks 18 holes in 2:45 and 2 of the guys are 80. Why are you slow?!? (Preceding comments are a joke)

In all honesty if I paid $5000 to play Augusta it would work out to ~$800/hour because I am taking my time and soaking it in.

I don't think I would actually pay that much but I would think about it for a long time before I said no.

Let's see - As of this moment, my wife allows me to play as much golf as I want, buy as many clubs as I need, but all within reason. I've played a couple of TPC courses, but they weren't close to 5 grand to play. Even if I could afford it, i just couldn't justify that price for one round of golf. Although Agusta has always been a dream of mine, I just couldn't do it. It would have to forever remain a dream.

I like the comment above about coke and cheeseburgers. How much do we spend a year on cable/internet?

So in my mind I think I could rationalize it, but ultimately would not pay that much.

A trip to Hawaii and golf would be much better.

If it got me on the course when it opened and allowed me to play until dark, then yes I am in. Probably still just for 18 too, to be honest. It's just one of those courses people don't get to play, and I would jump at the opportunity.

In a heart beat. I can't believe some people are saying they would take a week at bandon over a day at Augusta. Heck add a zero and make it $50,000 is when I would start being on the fence about going or not.
Heck, I think I could take to trip to the West coast (Bandon) and the East coast (Kiawah) for pretty close to that $5,000.

For me, that would give me a whole lot more memories than one round (or even day) at Augusta.

It would be amazing to play there, thats for sure, but for me, there is just too many other options that kind of money presents.

There was a thread a while back asking people how much they would pay to play there. If I remeber correctly, it seemed that $500 was kind of the average.

No- I actually did a golf trip to Scotland in '99- played Carnoustie 7 weeks after the Van De Velde disaster. The Old Course wasn't on the schedule but we got up early and walked on because an entire 4some from the U.S. didn't show. Played Troon and Prestwick- All of this costs less than than $5K. But I am a munichop and won't pay $500 for Pebble Beach- would rather play the public course there. To me the reason golf will always be less than mainstream is the fact that topics like this are even considered. As an aside- I watched the Indian Open last week and it looked like a muni- slow grainy greens and uneven conditions around the green. Single digits under par won. TV and the stimp meter did more to inflate the cost of golf than almost anything else- and Augusta National is the poster child for both.
