MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

On another note, GTT:

I play Recoil 450's. I like them to an extent, but I miss the feel of steel iron shafts. I haven't had much issue with my wrists or elbows aside from work.

To bring it back to City:

I would do the Blue Mash/Waverly duo idea. Gives options for more outside rounds with the hive without pulling a full price deal, if I have an idea on how these memberships work.

Other random things I'd consider:

- Quality of the food/drink options. This was more of a big deal to me than I would first admit. Having a great chef and a lot of good bar options is a big deal.

- Does TV have additional "fees" on top of your membership costs (cart fees, guest fees etc) - seems like that could easily push it over $500/mo.

- Is one option much more convenient than the other in terms of time - IE would you use one over the other more or less.

You're weighing a strictly financial arrangement against a luxury experience.

The WW/BM thing is an exercise in "how low can I get my cost per round?"

With Turf, you're buying into an experience. Regular games, good pace of play, social aspects, etc.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the Original Course 100x more the second time around. The first time, I was out there playing golf swing and playcticing. Couple that with how flat the place seemed after being used to courses like Hobbits, and WW as my staples, and I just felt underwhelmed. It felt a lot more nuanced the second go, when I was out there actually playing golf. It's still a little bit plain, but not in a way that would make your game weak in some way. The green complexes are strong. Will definitely keep all aspects of your game adequately challenged. Not that it'd be at the top of your list of worries, but I don't think the card yardage represents the playing length of the course particularly well. It's got plenty of length from the back tees for mid-length hitters like us.

I haven't played the other course yet.

If I was you, I'd look to play the other course at least once, and play the Original Course one more time. You'd be making a big commitment joining, so another look at the course you'll be playing the majority of your golf at would be very wise.

You're such a great candidate to join a private club, though. You're gonna play tons of golf. You like the competition, and regular money games. You'll beat the practice facility to death. You like to hang and have a beer and some grub in the grill after rounds.

Unofficial GTT:

For those using graphite iron shafts

What shafts are you using? Recoil 110F4.

Have you noticed a big difference on how you feel after playing a round with graphite vs. steel? Yes x1000000. I can't imagine ever playing steel again, with my wispy bod.

What shafts are you using? Recoil 110F4.

Have you noticed a big difference on how you feel after playing a round with graphite vs. steel? Yes. Wrist and shoulders feel much better. No or little pain.

I have not been as accurate with the graphite. I am hitting about 10% less greens in regulation. However, I have not started playing consistently yet. Only 5 rounds and 3 of those on the same weekend.

There are 4 restaurants. 2MoreTerps likes the options.

There is a $65 handicap fee and a $3 hole-in-one fee every time someone gets one.

Cart fees are like $20 per round, so $0 per round.

In terms of time, Hobbits, TV and WW are all VERY SIMILAR. Blue Mash is closer to work, but a haul to get home. If I did BM/WW, it would be primarily WW.

At the very least, I wouldn't sign on for that kind of commitment without at least playing the other course once and eating in as many of the restaurants as possible - especially the members grill.

they need to comp you a couple dinners and a couple rounds. small change for them to get you into a 3-year membership. as for the matrix quote, i just thought it applied, wasn't busting balls.

you'll know when i'm busting balls.

now go get your effin shine box. and while you're at it, go work on your wedge game.

actually, someone notify the TV membership director. they really should be thinking about ways to exclude you.

DC -- I will check out the grill. It is only $66 a month. . .

  • $200 Food and Beverage Minimum every 3 months (Food, Beverages (Soda & Alcohol) and Tip goes towards this minimum). This can be spent at Alexandra’s, Members Grill, Pool Snack Bar, Fairway Lounge (Alex’s Menu options), and any food or beverage ordered while in the SPA.

If I have to be there for three years, I'd look at it as it costing me $4k to join, and if I get lucky and nothing changes, I get $3,250 back three years from now. Even though that money is never actually spent. Three years is a long time.

OTOH, in what universe could I possibly "quit" a golf course with a year to goo and pay them $3200 for the privilege to do it? I'm not really trying to cheap out here, but $3250 does get my attention, so this is smelling like a 3 year deal. I mean, I've played regularly in this corridor for 6+ years. Not going anywhere soon.

I guess I don't care about the minimum at all. More that do you - not 2MT - but do you think the food/menu is actually good? Good beer options on tap or otherwise? Good spots to hang? No offense to 2MT btw but you especially I know you're pretty particular about certain things.

If you're going to be playing in a decent number of games per week/month, guys are going to hang out after. If you dont love the food/drink offerings for whatever reason - that's going to suck.

And obv I have no idea about anything there, I imagine everything is fine. And frankly for a $2k/yr option, I'm not really looking into this stuff as deeply. But if you stay the full 3 years you're at...roughly $17,000. For that much I'm going to want things that are a bit above "fine".

I hear you. I'm hypersensitive to physical ailments that would keep me from playing golf at this very moment in time, so I think about things like this probably more than most, and put what's likely an irrational level of weight on them.

Golf is f****** expensive.

Always get a good lol at DOMDC (Dirty Old Man Dave Chen).

It's kinda nice to be able to take some comfort in knowing Turf isn't a totally unknown quantity, since 2MT is a member. It's not like you're looking to join a place that nobody here has any F'ing clue about. He ought to have answers to pretty much any question you could ask. He's been out there for a couple years now, and still seems happy with it. That's coming from a guy that doesn't play as much as you, doesn't practice as much as you, and probably won't play as many of the tournaments, or money games as you.

Chefs change/beers change/menus change. I would never not join a place where the golf is solid because the restaurant isn't better than "fine".

If you live in a city (like, in a city...in the city limits...where your primary mode of transportation is walking), you're not worried about having good food at your club. "Fine" is acceptable.

New song title for the Hive playlist:

Sitting on the sh!tter, eating M&Ms.

We have a 2 seater outside of the office. I try to stay out since is a hazmat zone 90% of the time. But, last night's dinner decided it was time, so I went in. I was hoping I'd be in and out before I got any neighbors, but one side was already occupied (the big handicap condo). Anyway, I had just gotten down to the Shock and Awe, when I heard something bounce on the floor. I looked down and a red M&M was skittering across the tile. WTF! Dude next to me was eating M&Ms while doing business. So, Sitting on the sh!tter, eating M&Ms. EEEW!

Correct about 2More. And, he's told me he's there for the foreseeable future.

I'm kind of with Domes on the food. You're paying a minimum anywhere. I only need "fine". If they have any decent craft beer, I'll spend $66 a month.

This is a picture of the grill. It looks like Kent designed it on acid.

City the courses are like you stated very different. The food minimum is never an issue for me at SPCC. Easy way to do it is invite friends and they pay there own bill to you if you think you will not cover it yourself. SPCC is 500 a year for single and 1000 for a family. Like DC said "I don't really care about the food at first" If you join you will meet many new people and the facility's will then become more important to you most likely.

The best part of belonging to a private club is the people you meet, the groups you meet and the games you can get in. THIS IS ONE OF LIFES PLEASURES. It is not nor should it be about JUST value.

Play both sides and ask for any hidden expenses or added fees.

PS My food min. is almost full for the year already.

I wish I could drop the afternoon pickup route and play 18... bosses wouldn't care for it after missing yesterday with stomach problems myself.

I played Recoils for 1.5 seasons. They did exactly what I needed, got rid of all elbow issues. As soon as I was pain free, I went back to steel. I'll echo what has been said: less feel (which makes sense due to the vibration dampening), loss of accuracy, and I'll add a lack of consistency in ball flight. Some ballooned, some had no spin, some had 5,000 rpm. This is all scientifically proven through my poor eye sight.

Back to steel this year. Elbow pain is definitely back after multiple rounds in a short time, but it's no where as severe as it was pre-graphite. I like the performance / comfort of the steel over the pain relief of the graphite so I will be sticking with them. I'm currently mulling getting away from the c-taper lites, but I need to find a new experiment first.
