MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

The distance at which they hit 75% GIRs is 150 yards in the fairway, versus 47 yards in the rough. That's honestly pretty shocking, but the numbers (probably) don't lie.

though informative (and i agree, very surprising), i still think it doesn't quite apply to us exactly. what would be the amateur's equivalent of a pro's 150 yard shot? 120 yards? closer?

(caveat: i didn't get to go through the full article, so maybe this has been discussed in it.)

if there was a 75% challenge (out of oh, let's say 8 balls), what max distance would you feel comfortable going back to? zero chance i go to 150. i'd probably go very conservative and go with 115 or so.

Oh, it's far from perfect for sure.

The software has seen very little updating, basically since they launched.

Their initial roll out of "strokes gained" took forever, and was pretty useless. It's still kinda useless, IMO. I guess it helps to see how you compare to other skill levels in different parts of the game, but I personally didn't learn anything I don't already know from it.

They seem to be putting very little effort into software improvements, and analytics. It seemed like such a desperate reach for revenue when they released game golf live. They'd be better off spending effort on updating the software and charging for those updates.

Agree with all of this. Its been great for keeping track of basic data but their software updates have been nonexistant. I guess I'm hopeful that all of this is being stored in a backend database and eventually they will put some cash into improving how the data is actually displayed. But those updates have been slow in coming. To top it all off, they just do some things incorrectly - like their Scrambling stat is completely wrong. Which they admitted - and then admitted it wasnt necessarily going to be fixed.

So I like it for the basic functionality and I've definitely learned a few things a long the way. Like at the beginning of last season I was leaving a huge amount of my short iron/wedge shots short of the green. So I started clubbing up and now its closer to 6-12% for my short irons. This has been a huge change for me with the 8,9,PW - it used to be close to 33%.

I also like for vacation/bucket list rounds you have a complete record/visual of the holes that you played. Small thing maybe but I like it. I think if you wanted to you could use it to record a practice round and make a yardage book out of it.

Moderately level lie, and size greens - maybe 135'ish. Probably overestimating myself.

I would put myself right @ 135 - basic 9 iron shot. Even though I only have 30 or so shots with the new irons, I'm at @ 75% with them and that sounds about right. All things considered of course.

Hobbits or Worthington, I think 135 is comfortable. Nice full shot.

115yards. Perfect conditions level lie.

Jordan Spieth was 18/21 scrambling. That is insane. I went 6/8 at Clustered and felt invincible. Those guys are on a different plane, like sixteen dimensions beyond all of us, except City from over the green on 18 at Hobbits.

Well, at least 3 of those guys round out the 4 people on the planet capable of the shot from over 18 green at Hobbits.

He was 6/7. You were 6/8.

You felt invincible? I bet he did too. 6/7 is a good tournament for the pros. It's not their average.

That's not a different plane; it's just first class of your plane, where you're in business class and about 90% of golfers are in economy class.

I'm surprised at the rough / fairway differentials, actually. I'd like to see those numbers for amateurs, which takes into account the fact that we play many places with very light rough.

Funny character joined us at Hobbits today...Clint. Playing the red Volvik.

Our first glimpse of Clint was when we were on the 4th tee box. We looked back at the third fairway to see a guy in long sleeves and long pants, while we were all Kyle Reifering through our shorts.

He stuffs the Volvik to 3 feet and we didn't see him putt it, but good shot. He joined us on the tee. Solid bogey on 4,then chips in for birdie on 5.

Did I mention he was wearing crocs? And hitting a driver from about 2005? And playing a red Volvik?

After 5, he offers us some Woodford reserve, or fireball. Sully says he thinks he'd die if he had some, and the guy says he was trying to kill himself anyway (or something like that).

After 6, he finds another bottle of bourbon and after a healthy pull, he says "I need to be at work tonight."

Me, "I hope theyre pretty understanding."

Clint, "well, I'm a pilot for Southwest."

Anyway, after he doubles 8, he goes "that put me 2 over".

Well, when we played with him he went bogey, birdie, bogey (at least), bogey so he must have started out like a house afire or his score was about as honest as his job description.

I had to duck after 9, but was hitting putts and heard him pound 2 into the trees and then watched him drive off.

FARE THEE WELL, CLINT! I'll think of you next time I'm flying Southwest.

I'd say ~100, and that's probably overly optimistic. I think once you get to a 10+ cap, there is very little distance that you can actually hit 75%. 60 and you skull it, that sort of thing. Hitting 75% from anything over 80 yards is better than the vast majority of golfers could do.

Hot out there today. Played 9 with City and 18 with PQ. I drank 7 or 8 500mL bottles of water and didn't pee until I got home. I shot an 89 that should have been low 80s at worst. And had to sink birdie on 18 to do that. Not hitting driver as well as I'm hitting every other club right now, which cost me on one or two holes. Blew up completely on #16 when I was trying to mess with my swing instead of playing. Missed a lot of 4-6 footers which cost me a lot of strokes. My putt count was high (37 with another 2-3 frutts not included in that), but they mostly felt like good solid contact (with a few exceptions). I feel like I'm hitting it well but I'm not reading the greens great and my speed calibration is completely off after the Monte clinic. If I'm doing that 5 rounds from now I'll be concerned.

City, you missed #10 with Clint. He hit one 30 degrees right and immediately gone. He's about to quit, but goes okay I'll play another. Then he hits another one 30 degrees right and it's immediately gone. He quits and goes home. I think his "2 over" was close enough to legit, but just a really good streak. But I also wasn't paying close attention to anything he was doing.

therealsneak, which house is yours on the 7th hole at Hobbits? I did something disgusting to the lawns on each of them just to be sure. It was a lot of homes and took a lot of effort, but it was worth it.

Deadman's reaction to the Clustered Spires Round:

Fun for the most part. I played Horri-bad. I am a mess right now in the golf game with the exception of the short game (mainly using the bounce or using my 5 wood to chip using a putting stroke). Best thing, though? Only lost 2 balls the entire round, even with how bad I'm playing.

PQ can destroy the ball, flat out. Sully had some good shots, but was mainly Nyah on the front before just turning deadly on the back 9. THDC was consistent, but hit some very bad bounces.

Best post shot reactions, IMO: 'Go, you b!' 'Oh you idiot, CUT!', 'These F-n greens'. Disclaimer: Only 1 of these reactions was from me.

The "diva" move is not to play, dummy. I'm exaggerating the use of your terminology for a humorous effect (and failing miserably apparently).

You played fine. Your expectations are often way way too high. You got pissed making 2 bogies in a row at one point, which is a good streak for you. A bunch of bogies means you shoot 90 and lower your handicap by 10 strokes. Im not upset by back to back bogies and I have to give you a stroke a hole in matchplay.

Anyway, would you like to know a sweet tip that would help you score better on the par 3s and short par 4s? Tee it up!;)

I have no idea if you're being sarcastic or not and if you watched or not.

To be charitable he is really immature. I suspect it's worse than that. That has nothing to do with his shoulder injury (or not). It's his demeanor and the way he carries himself.

the composure of the final two tonight was super impressive

Only saw clips. Dude looked like he was hurt bad, continued to compete and still won. Thought it showed guts and poise and skill. Honestly, I wouldn't know if he's immature or not... Was just going by the golf I saw.

I guess Tex is right. I must have sympathy pains for golfers with shoulder injuries.

Going to be a lot of clarity in the Baltimore Bracket of the season long match play this week. . .

Three-ball match today between me, JJ and Halcyan. Three separate 18 hole matches. Halcyan giving me 1 and giving JJ 2. I'm giving JJ 1. So, I'm getting one and giving one on hole 3.

Then on Saturday morning, ACOD (is that an officially boogs-coined thread term, "Word not allowed crack of dawn") face off between Halcyan and Stix at Pine Ridge. And I do mean ACOD. Sunrise about 5:40AM. Tee time : 6:08. If anyone pars hole 1 from the tips at SIX OH EIGHT in the ante meridiem, I will bow down and call them Beauregard.

I guess the problem would be with differentiating legitimate injuries and "hey you're not playing well time to say you're injured so someone else can play"

Not really sure why they can't have 6 man "rosters" and each round you pick your five to play. The day after qualifying they play 36. It would benefit teams with depth
