Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Recommended Posts

I will be in Chicago next Monday 10/3. Thinking of playing HOE from what I am reading. Was initially looking at Dubs but with the reviews plus the cost its too much IMO. I have to add in the Uber to get there, bag fees on the flight, etc.

They are aerating both Elgin courses on 10/3 and 10/4.

of course they are hahahaha.

thanks a ton for that update.

That's a long a** Uber ride.

You should consider Cantigny, still a bit of a haul, but will be shorter and easier to get to than going to Elgin out on 90.

The OP didn't mention where he was staying in the Chicago area, but Cantigny is still quite a haul from downtown. 'Not everyone's favorite choice, but I'd say Harborside if he's in the downtown area, as it's only 17 miles from The Loop.

I am staying in downtown Chicago. Have played Harborside like 10 years ago so that might be a possibility. I will also look at Cantigny.

Ravisloe CC is a nice parkland course near the south suburban Homewood Metra Electric station. They'll pick you up at the station across the street from the course.

Prairie landing isn't aerating until 10/10, I believe

Could be a good option for you

I will check that one out. thanks

Glen club could also be an option. Fall rates will make it less expensive than usual and a cheaper uber because it's only 12 miles from Ohare. Also look into Mt Prospect Golf Club. Only 9 miles from Ohare and newly restored.

Played in a work scramble yesterday at Indian Boundary. The wind was brutal, and for most holes, was more of a crosswind, but had about 2 holes each, into and with the wind. My highlight was a chip in eagle from ~40 yards, on I believe it was 13. We finished at -9 (legit), and it was funny to hear -15 and -12 from other groups. Not saying it isn't possible, as we were -12 last year, but when it comes from potentially shady groups, meh.

What's with all the love for Ravisloe? There's not much to it and no memorable holes. Plus the greens are like cheese.

What's to like about a nice Donald Ross (re)design? I think it's a solid course, but yes, it's not overly memorable. I mentioned it because it's probably the easiest course to get to via public transportation.

requestor was willing to play Highlands of Elgin and pay for an Uber to get there.

I've only driven onto the Ravisloe property and had a look around, and that was after playing Flossmoor, a private track.

I'd play Ravisloe to fulfill my curiosity about Donald Ross designs, but not necessarily if I was traveliing to chicago from elsewhere.

Ravisloe is a course that one of the best served by the Metra train line, but there are others.

Not sure that the requestor of info (middle8) wanted to be limited to public trans...

I think the metra stop in the glen is walkable to the Glen Club golf course, but I think greens fees are in range 150-175 now (haven't checked website and know nothing (Sgt Schulz) of their aeration schedule.

The Glen drops their weekday rates to $100 - $120 next week. Keep in mind that their listed rates do not include the $25/pp cart fee.

How do people think The Glen Club compares to Dubs? Similar greens fees but I hear little complaining (nor little about the course in general) about their rates.

Not quite similar rates. Dubs is $155 w/ cart. During the summer weekends, The Glen Club is $220 w/ cart in the morning, and $130 at twighlight. That a sizeable different.

In the past I thought Dubs was the better course, and better conditioned. However, my round there last week has me questioning that. TGC certainly has more variety in the holes, with more water hazards coming into play.

Plus Glen Club is just an overall better experience. And when you are paying top dollar for golf the details matters - stuff like premium NXT range balls, a nice half way house, friendly staff, emphasis on pace of play, etc.

The courses are both excellent championship layouts. I personally think Glen Club is more fun, but others may emphasize other attributes when comparing courses.

There hasn't been much lately, but I've heard various complaints about the Glen Club over the years. I like the course, but I think it's overpriced. But it does offer something of a private club, higher end golf type experience without the membership fees, where the Cog facility as a whole is more of an everyman's type course, still very nice but catering more to the average golfer. Cog is more of an old school, traditional golf experience typical of a generation or so back, nothing wrong with that, but The Glen Club is definitely more of a modern style and more impressive from the course to the range to the facilities. Both are great courses but they reflect their locales and average clientele pretty well, north shore and southern burbs are far different.

I don't disagree, but the fact that The Glen Club is only 15 years old is a major reason. Of course, there was nothing stopping Cog from pumping money into the facilities instead of the course renovation.

I agree however the real genius in the course I think is around the greens. Beyond that most of the par 4's are the same, straight and 400 yards. The par 3's are decent and offer a nice variety but last time I played there I got bored hitting the same iron for my approach on the par 4's (with a few exceptions). It used to be a pretty good deal but deals there this year seem to be harder to find.

Rates when up, and the deals became rarer when they made the Golfweek Best in State list (currently #9). I agree about the par 4's. The par 3 4th, 7th, and 11th are tough holes.

I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with Cog's facilities that they needed upgrading though, it's perfectly suited for who and what they are and their clientele's needs. You go upscale in that area and you might price out a lot of people. I've been to wedding receptions there, they were great, the bar and restaurant are fine as well and the driving range is probably tops in the area if you have access to the short game center, they just don't have that new and flashy design and feel to them like the Glen Club has.

Ugh. The 2/4 "clubhouse" needs to be bulldozed. I don't think they need a replacement in the same league as The Glen Club, but something as least as good as a cheap muni would be nice.
