US Open'ish conditions for the weekend at Shepherd's Crook

sounds like fun?

at first I thought it was the entire course, but it will just be the par 3 11th, haha

Play Our U.S. Open Hole

Greetings golfers,

Only an elite few, very few, ever get to play in the U.S. Open. We'd like to offer you a U.S. Open experience - but just for one hole.

This Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17, our par-3 11th hole will be set as close to U.S. Open conditions as possible. Rough at four inches, the green running at about 12 on the stimpmeter - it will be fun to play, and a challenge as well. Just like the boys playing at Shinnecock Hills!

Book your tee times now - and bring your best game. Even for just one hole!

Cool idea... And I'm fine with it on one hole. But make it a par 4/5...not a par 3.

I'm heading to Grand Rapids tomorrow to attend the LPGA Meijer Classic on Friday. I'll play Hawkshead on the way there tomorrow, Thornapple Pointe on Saturday morning, and The Ravines in Saugatuck on the drive back on Sunday.

Nice, have fun. I've gone a couple of times over the years as I've got a friend that works for corporate and has tent access. From what I remember a few years back they had some "Grand Taste" tent along a hole on the back 9 that had some nice local food and drink options, not sure it's happening again but it was better food than the norm and I think I saw more people there than on the course.

Thornapple is neat but a bit gimmicky in spots, haven't done Hawkshead or The Ravines yet. If you have time for an extra round one of my favorites around is Pilgrims Run, about 30 minutes north of Blythefield.

Yes, they still have the Grand Taste pavilion along the 11th fairway.

I played Pilgrims Run a few years back. 'Not a bad course. If I have time for an extra round I'd likely play The Mines or The Meadows.

They'd be nuts to let the average weekend hacker try to hack out of 4 inch rough and putt on fast greens for 18 holes, talk about 5+ hour rounds.

There might be 5 hour rounds anyway just because of the hole they picked. The convexed peanut shaped green on #11 is already ridiculous as it is, can't imagine the average putts when they run at a 12. You can end up putting off the front or back of the green depending on which side of the hole you're on.

Hawkshead is super fun. Love the drivable par 4 11th. Ravines from the tips is crazy. Love both of those courses.

Ha I've never played there so I didn't realize that. Sounds like they were going for the 7th at Shinny '04 then... At least most hackers get pissed and pocket it after about 8 or 9.

Fastest greens I've ever played. It has some gimmick holes (#9 and #13), but overall it's an awesome layout. If it's a clear day, you get some cool views to downtown Chicago too.

The Crook tries to keep their greens kind of fast on a regular basis. Eleven green has some contour, almost 38 yds deep. Ridge in the middle, one more back right.

FWIW, Left miss is usually more trouble than right. Mounds and some high clumpy stuff. You can get up and down from the trap right or if short just pitch/putt up. Some bailout right of the bunker. Maybe they will grow that area as well.

Tees are 201, 180, 162 and arranged landing strip style.

Here’s my Shepherd’s 11 Story: A few years ago I played a late Sunday afternoon round. On 7 or 8 I joined the only other player on the course. He was a nice guy in his 60’s, but a double bogie golfer. The kind of player that it hurt my back watching him swing. On 11, his swing was smooth and he didn’t lose his balance. The sound was a definite sweet spot bulls eye. The ball flight was a beautiful high slight draw. You can guess where this is going... The ball landed maybe 10 feet short and rolled straight in. We were like Norm and Cliff whiffing on our high fives, and fell on top of each other celebrating. Unfortunately, the club house was closed when we finished, so we didn’t share a beer.

I played it a few times the first year it opened in 2010. The greens ran at a 15 on the Stimp. No overstatement, no GolfWRX b.s. My aunt (the member) and I (the public course regular) might as well have been putting on a skating rink. It got a bit slower over the years (still a pretty consistent 12-13) but, man that first year was something. Enjoy. It’s a great set-up. My favorite holes are 4 - a straight ahead par three with a massive green that my dad described as “like a bowling alley” - and 15. The 15th is an Arthur Hills special: A crazy long par 4 with a bunker right in the middle of the fairway. My average score on those holes is around double bogey but I’ve birdied both exactly once each. 13 is also a really cool par 3 with a hidden green, 9 is gimmicky but creative since it’s modeled after Mt. Vesuvius (let me know if they ever added a green side bunker since the members were begging for one), and 7 is a super long 5 with a split fairway and a crazy green that slopes every direction but straight. Choose what tees you play from wisely.

I've never played Chicago Highlands.

but a quick question for you when you do, B-Man, any progress on the clubhouse?

THe same guy who is doing the Chicago Highlands clubhouse is designing the Oak Meadows clubhouse.

He is the same dude who did the Mistwood clubhouse re-do and addition of the performance center.

some neat stuff here...

Anyone every play Delbrook in WI?

Ahem...Bear?

I’ve used their “range” before (a collection of egged out Balatas from the late 90s and various surlyn balls that people have lost) but never the course. It’s a 6600 yard par 70 with spongy greens. It also features watered fairways. I know because it says so on the sign at the entrance. You’ll get the joke when you get to the course. Oh, it’s the only Bridgestone facility I know of. Anywhere.

Yes, it is a goat track. The older 18 is parkland with mature trees, but open off the tee. The newer 9 (I think that's the north) has some wide-open prairie style holes that are right next to I-43. Slow greens. It has some bunkers around the greens, but really no fairway bunkers.

I'm heading up to Grand Rapids next Monday to play Cedar Chase and Pilgrim's Run. Then we're hitting Angel's Crossing and Hawkshead on Tuesday if the weather cooperates. Currently, Bear and I are praying for decent weather. Monday looks okay until late in the afternoon. Tuesday..........like I said, we're praying.

Glen Erin is a straight shot west on WI 11. Abbey Springs is southeast of Delavan, and Evergreen is east in Elkhorn. Evergreen is by far the least interesting of the three. Glen Erin is a 6800 yard par 71 that blends faux links and woodlands. Greg Martin design. Great course with hilariously hokey names for every hole. Abbey Springs is a Dick Nugent course cut right out of the trees. It’s not ultra long but it’s got plenty of teeth and is really scenic. Evergreen is a 6300 yard 27 hole facility that feels more like a Chicago area course than something in Southern WI.

Includes lunch too! Never done it but sounds fun. Don't think I'll make it, but I bet you could get 54 in easily if you start early and get round 2 off before lunch.

Old Wayne is really cool. Got to play it with some former co-workers one of which had a membership there. They of course were pretty awful golfers and wanted to play a scramble ::eyeroll::, and I just had a day, used my ball 95% of the time and I estimated I would have easily had the chance to break 80 playing my own ball. Really liked the course.
