It makes the most sense to play first either on the way to Traverse City, Manistee, or Arcadia or to start before heading back down to play Pilgrim's, Thornapple, courses in Kalamazoo, Hawkshead, or Harbor Shores. It's not really positioned to play in the middle of a golf trip. Huge storms forced our hand.

Whaaaaaaaa? never heard of this, even at private clubs. sounds awesome. i've been meaning to get out there but now I think it's gonna be sooner rather than later.

There are 3 in fact. The second hole has a 145 tee going in acting as a par 3. On top of that many bunkers and greens to practice on prior to the round.

I had no idea they were practice holes. Every time I've been there they've had some sort of high school team or youth clinic on them so they were off limits.

The practice facilities at PL are top notch compared to Arrowhead. But I'm with VNutz and would same the exact same thing.

... The coolest part is they are just like the rest of course for green speeds and condition.

I agree Arrowhead is towards the top of the market price-wise. I usually play it once or twice a year, and have played it at times where it wasn't great. But I played it a couple weeks back and it was in fantastic shape with greens running beautifully. I've played PL a handful of times and the conditioning has been inconsistent, great once, poor another, aerated (with no warning) another. I feel like I've been getting emails for PL deals all spring through GolfNow, so that might be worth looking into, for whomever inquired and got this going.

I haven't played PL since their "renovation". Did the upgrade significantly change the course along the lines of Mistwood, Mt. Prospect or The Preserve, or more like Wilmette?

Not sure I'd call what they did an upgrade as much as a cost saving measure. They were spending over a Mil on sand annually and that was their primary motivation. They might have improve pace a bit as well but I don't think they did anything on the course other than the bunker removal and maybe fixing a few.

 

Mistwood had a few holes revised and the Preserve was pretty much all of them except 1 and 18.

bunker removal and adding better billy bunker liners to the other traps is what was done at PL.

 

Their superintendent left after the course was completed to start his own turf business.

Prices are up this year with the economy but the courses are in good shape. Played Balmoral last week and place is in good shape. Hole #10 there is a pro hole i still cant figure out. Greens were running very slow though

 

Overall, i dont think i have played a course this year in bad shape. I am sure the rain us helping.

I think the biggest issue this season has been slow greens, relatively speaking. 'Probably due to the rain, and the inability of the maintenance crews to get out there and cut them. The bunkers have been generally bad for the most part, too.

I was able to get out this afternoon. $33/ walk The Preserve at 1:00 w/ DuPage card. The course is in ok shape. A few fairways have aerated spots. It’s certainly playable. The greens are decent. I found a Taylor Made TPX ball. My first time playing it, and really liked it, hopefully it’s not a placebo effect.

Finally got out and payed Deerfield this morning. Great deal on their website so why not? Haven't been out there in at least 10 years. Was impressed with their practice facility. Good condition. A little pricey on the balls, but that's okay because I got such a great deal on the green fee.

 

Conditions on the course were great. It was cart path only because of all the rain, but me and the guy I paired up with played in about 3:45. We had some waiting as they let 3-4 2-somes out for some reason. But the cart path only kept the waiting Fairly short. Par 3's were the only places the wait was a little meh.

 

Fairways were cut nicely. Greens were rolling quick and true. Had a few birdies on the day. Wasn't getting my shots into the green close enough for many good birdie opportunities.

 

Did hit #18 in 2 and had a 5 ft side, downhill putt for eagle. Ran it over the edge and about 4 ft past. Made the birdie thankfully for a 74. Lots of position golf out there, but Definitely enjoyed my round.

Schaumburg is opening the reworked Players 9 on June 30.

Played schaumburg a couple of weeks ago and it was in great shape. Greens were really nice.

Looks like they put the real white silica type sand on the players course.

What public courses in the area keep the green speeds up? I do not play a ton of public golf but yesterday went to Ravi. I love that course but the green speeds were just terrible maybe rolling 6? Had to bang the hell out of putts to get them anywhere near the hole, super fuzzy overall I was very disappointed in the greens.
