Thirty years ago I was playing Spalding XL4 irons and the matching 3 and 4 woods that came with the complete 3-SW/1,3,4,5 set. I purchased the set a couple of years earlier from Overlook Golf Course pro shop in PA., whose ad I saw in the back of Golf Digest, (Googled them and they're still in business, btw). Sent them a money order via US mail and waited, lol. The driver to that set never worked and was soon replaced by a tiny headed Golden Ram metal driver with a Royal Precision 5.5 steel shaft that I bought at Morrie Maige's (sp?)sporting goods store. Loved that driver- only one I ever cracked, lol. I think the head was smaller than the XL4 4 wood I played. The 5 wood had a really wierd face progression and I don't think I ever hit that club more than 10 times before it was retired. Putter was a pot metal MacGregor Ben Crenshaw 8802 copy. I shot my lowest ever 9 hole (-1) and 18 hole (+2) scores with those clubs.

While the laminates and Ram are long gone, I got a huge smile watching my 17 year old son smoking those irons at the range this past summer. For years, he could never hit the ball out of his shadow, but something clicked after he finally hung up the baseball spikes. Really looking forward to playing golf with him this season!

Thirty years ago.....wow!
Pro Power Driver and three wood, Steel shafts. Made by a gentleman in SLC, Jae Smith, who built them as component clubs. The guy was amazing at his craft, but tended to literally give away the shot and wound up going out of business and going back to hanging sheet rock.
First Flight "The Standard", 1-PW, Stiff Steel and Chamois grips.
SW was a "Bandit" with the dot face.
Putter- Wilson Tour Special II. Sort of an 8802 with zero offset.
Jones bag or maybe it was a Vagabon carry bag, not sure.
I could actually hit that 1-iron with a decent amount of accuracy with a little fade. Those were the days.

Wall Board ,Gypsum, hard a** work!!
Spent three months of my life finishing off the walkout basement. Miserable stuff. Made even worse by the drywall compound (aka 'Mud') that had to be applied and sanded. The Horror! Never again. If EVER the need arises in the future, the only task to be performed is writing a check! I digress.....

Thirty years ago, didn't golf. So I had no bag, no clubs. Was a fisherman. A boat. Boxes of lures, rods and reels and other assorted sundry items. An equally expensive endeavor in its own right.

"You're not an idiot (golfer). You're not a g*****n looney now, boy. You're a fisherman!" (paraphrasing Cuckoo's Nest).

There's been a few replies like this ITT. Thirty years ago, mid-80's, seems like yesterday.

Makes a "veteran young guy" feel like an "old guy". Thx for posting....I guess.

1985...

I finally made the switch full time to a metal driver from persimmon. I loved my Powerbilt Citation driver. I kept switching back and forth before that.

11 degree TaylorMade driver - X stiff shaft

MacGregor MT ColoKrom irons 2-PW -Stiff shafts

Driving iron that had no stamping what so ever. ( It was spec'd at 18 degrees, and normal 1 iron length. Found it broken in half near the tree line at a local course )

Wilson Staff JP II S/W

Tommy Armour heel shafted blade putter

Played to about a 5 hdcp at that time.

I had a set of Spaldings with all-weather grips,

#2 wood

#4 wood

irons 2-9 (no wedges)

putter.

That was it until one day I had a brain freeze and bought a #1 wood and sand wedge.

With this rig I could almost break 90 on a good day on a kindly links with a tail wind. The

golf balls were smaller and wound, we used to cut and unwind the old ones and make our

own version of a bungee. After endless match play I sold them to a doctor and bought a sailing

dinghy instead. With the advance in technology, I'm not sure todays golf is a game of skill.

Current Bag:

TM R7 425 driver 11.5

Cleveland Launcher #4 wood

Cobra King Hyper Steel #7 wood

BB Heavenwood # 9 wood

Titlelst DCI Black O/S irons 7 8 9 W SW, Lovett chipper

McGregor putter

Titleist Tour Soft balls

I got into the game 29 years when I was a freshman in college. First set was:

Powerbilt Citation 1,3,4, black

Wilson 1200LT 3-W

American something or other SW

Tommy Armor T Line putter

Bought everything used but the putter. Still have it somewhere

What a set up! Brought back some memories.....one of my mates dad had the tiger shark and boy I wanted a set! I loved the look of them

The Tiger Shark irons sure were different! I remember letting a fellow play through our group a couple of years ago and he was playing them. Never saw a set of those before or after.

I'm not sure how you could play something more traditional after playing a set of those. But, then again, there were lots of folks who managed to move on from Cleveland VAS.

;)

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I can't believe I'm eligible for this thread, no offense. More surprised at how long I've been playing/struggling with this game.

30 years ago, some generic junior box set, irons, woods, putter. 29 years ago, some sort of cast Wilson CBs with a ton of offset, some maroon colored Yamaha 3W used as a driver, Honma persimmon 5W, and a Slotline putter. After all that came the TM Burner drivers and FWs, Ping Eye2s, Wilson 8813, Bullseye, etc.

I actually like the vas, still do. I think my eyes just like different for some reason, hence I really liked the tiger shark. Remember the Browning 4400?? One of me mates had a set back in the 80s, I thought they looked fantastic!
