A scratch player against Phil Mickelson with a 700 yard advantage....

Obee

Recommended Posts

Just a casual round with nothing on the line, the scratch player may have a shot if the planet's are aligned. If there's money on the line, Phil is foaming at the mouth and no way he loses.

There was plenty of action.

I have three related stories:

1) I grew up caddying at The Country Club (Brookline) from 1987-1993. One of the guys who worked in the Pro Shop was Phil's teammate at ASU. He was the best player I'd ever seen at that point. He brought Phil to play. If I'm not mistaken, Phil had won the amateur and in Phoenix, but I'm not sure if he had turned pro. Phil was amazing. The difference between him and another division 1 player was night and day.

2) Once a summer they would set up the US Open routing. Brookline has 27 holes. The Open course is a combination. I never saw any of the best players in the club break 80.

Phil destroys a scratch player even giving up 700 yards.

Define "destroys." ;-)

I would define "destroys" as winning in a such a dominating and convincing manner the winner controls the tempo of the game at all times. Like the way Alabama beat Michigan State last week.

Obviously, I'm being set up. I'll gladly walk into this trap to hear a great story.

3) I played Division 1 lacrosse in college, and played with many All Americans. Only one was1st team. He was incredible. His senior year there were four 1st team AA's at his position. Two of them were the Gait's. They're are arguably the two best players in the history of the game. The difference between them and my teammate was enormous.

There's a point to my boring you with these details. In every endeavor there're many greats, but there're only a few elite, world class, top of the mountain players.

I grew up watching the Gait's here in 'Cuse. They were simply awesome.

My Freshman year,'89, we played 'Cuse in the Dome. They "destroyed" us. They scored so many goals the PA announcer lost his voice and had to be replaced. They honored Jim Brown that day, he was on their bench the whole game.

What do you think would happen? Would the scratch player stand a chance? What if it's the scratch player's home course and Mickelson has played it only one time previously?

Does the scratch player have any hope? If not, how many shots a side should he get from Mickelson to make it fair?

Let's say the course is rated 76 from the tees Phil is playing and 72 from the tees the scratch player is playing.

Have at it!!

(cool)

Phil could use a balata ball and persimmon woods and the scratch still wouldn't have a chance.

Disclaimer: I hacked it up in a round with Obee at his home course three years ago when I was in town for a conference. If he remembers me, it's as the guy who putted sidesaddle and stepped forward on the follow-through like Gary Player on his way to shooting 96 or something like that, although I did hit a pretty good shot to a back left pin on 8. Meanwhile, he and his buddies formed the most impressive group I had played in at that time. I still regularly repeat two things he told me that day: "Scratch golf starts with solid, center of the clubface contact every time" and "I told her I'll be at the course every Saturday, most Sundays, and that 100% of my travel will be golf travel." I'm still trying to get my wife on board with the latter...

Here's my math:

You have 7-8 strokes of difference in handicap, with 4 strokes of difference in course rating. So Phil has about a 4 or 5 shot advantage in handicap by the time you tee off. Against a normal scratch player, I think Phil wins 90-95% of the time - a 4 or 5 shot advantage in handicap turns into a 6 or 7 shot practical advantage by the time you factor in Phil's consistency. Phil on a bad day is still gonna shoot 1 or 2 over even on this very tough course, and the scratch guy will beat himself in the 10 rounds in 20 where he doesn't shoot 74 or better.

But 90-95% leaves the scratch guy a fighting chance, and we're also talking about a stronger-than-average scratch player here on a course where local knowledge matters more than most. David, I want to believe in you. I think you'd beat him 4 or 5 times in 20.

I say Philly Mick got Obee by 2. Obee is a solid state player IIRC

Plus, Obee said the course was not tight so Phil can unload off the tips all day, and IIRC, Obee is not long. 700 yards is approx 39 per hole. I'm guessing Phil was past Obee off the tee even from the back decks and had a lot less club into most holes.

That being said, if Mr. Make Us Wait has a careerish day and makes some putts and feathers in some tight iron shots, it could be closer than the supposedly statistical blowout

When I was a 4 I played w Brendan Steele at a Nationwide event over 36 holes. He played 20-30 yards back on every hole. I shot 73 both days and he shot 69 and 69 I believe. Now when I was 25 and a tourney / college scratch (like Obee still is now) we would have been MUCH closer. I could have won playing up a deck if I was better and he had an off tee

I'm sad I wasn't in on this match with my +3 buddy (who played the US Senior Open last summer in CA)

GREAT story.

How did Rickie go from -3 to -4 with a par?

Let me go back and re-figure. I know the scores are correct, and I remember 90% of the holes shot-by-shot, but there are a couple I was fuzzy on.
