Which Accessories Identify You As A Hacker?

Recommended Posts

I'd say maybe 4% of the people on this forum use irons until they wear them out.

Haha. You might be right. I'm just used to good players using their gamer irons until they start to get rust spots in the center. The guys I play with generally don't change irons until they are used up. I've seen a thousand 20+ handicappers with iron headcovers, but I'm just trying to understand other than resale value, why would a quality player, say 5 cap or less, would use them.

iron covers have nothing to do with ability of play, like everything else in this thread which is really tongue in cheek.

what they have to do with is a personal opinion on sound, chatter, resale (cause we're all hos at heart on golfwrx), and whatever else. just because you don't understand it doesn't mean others don't.

At the risk of offending someone I have a legitimate question on iron head covers. I get it if you are trying out a set and don't know if you are going to sell them, but why continue to use them after you know they are keepers? Won't you use the irons until you wear them out, and what difference does it make if they have no bag chatter if nobody ever sees them anyway because they are under headcovers. With woods and putters obviously chatter would ding and dent the woods, causing potential structural issues and make them hideous at address, and with the putter, dings across the face could affect performance. However on an iron the only parts that get chatter, you don't even see at address. Do you guys just like to pull off your iron covers at home and look at how good the backs of your irons look? Seriously I'd like to understand this beyond eliminating bag chatter on a set you may not hang on to.

Some of us like chatter marks on our clubs, some of us don't. Some like mustard on their hotdogs and some like ketchup. It's just a matter of personal preference. What's so hard to understand about that?

But nobody sees they are perfect because they are hidden under headcovers at all times. I understand keeping something beautiful if it is on display, but I don't really get it if nobody ever sees it. I guess it's just saying the look of an iron head cover is more pleasing than the look of a bag chattered iron. If so, I'd disagree but I guess everyone has their own idea of what's attractive.

I certainly understand the idea of not liking to hear your irons clack together. Understandable that this might annoy some people. Personally I like it. It's just a "golf sound" like real spikes on pavement.

I think you are missing the point that it is not about what someone else likes... it's about what the person who owns the clubs like. Who the heck buys clubs because of what someone else thinks about them? No one I hope... so it also goes with how you decide to treat them and how you like them to look.

My 3rd year golfing I bought Nike VR Pro blades, I was going to be Tiger (in my mind at least) and they looked so pretty. The last thing I wanted to do was get them dinged up so I grabbed matching head covers for them. After being abused by my usual foursome about them, I decided the chatter depreciation was better than keeping them clean and getting ripped on constantly. After dumping the head covers the jokes were about me playing irons I couldn't hit. Needless to say I dumped iron covers and blade irons.

Confessions of a real hacker.

I'll keep saying it about iron covers... for me it's all about the sound. 2 out of 3 of my membership's home courses are in need of or in the midst of cart path renovations with A LOT of tree root speed bumps and I the clank of clubs when going over them is like nails on a chalk board. The Ogio Silencer took care of ~90% of this until the grip locks started failing, so now I'm back to either a Wood-E Stand bag or Staff bag with iron covers... and I'll use them until a good deal comes along on a Bennington Quiet Organizer.

I played a round with this older guy, late 60's early 70's maybe? He's a volunteer at the course I play at. He had these iron covers that were pretty small and clean, and some irons i had never heard of, some boutique forged iron that looked really nice. Says he's gonna play from the tips with me, so whatever. Course plays at 7K, but it has 5 Par 5's and only has a few truly tough/long holes. Come to find out, he was a former pro, and was a stick! Dude shoots 73, taught me how to plumb-bob, and was probably one of the best rounds I've ever played with anyone that wasn't a friend.

I've def met my fair share of hacks, and was a total hack in the beginning when i started playing. Im now slightly less of a hack. But this dude was no hack, Iron covers and all...

Guess I'm one of the 4%. I played TM Burner LCGs from 2002 or so until 2010 then moved up to the TM R9 TPs and just this year went to the Tour Preferred CBs.

played Titleist 804OS until this year. And only lessons and a shorter more compact swing got me to change.

I've got some Martini tees, indestructible and can tee it up muck quicker. I think you could tee up a basketball on one o' them... and a Frogger brush.

Good gawd, check this one out. We determined early in the thread that a stroke counter is a hacker accessory, but look what I found: a double stroke counter. If you need a stroke counter to keep track of how poorly you are playing, chances are that with this accessory you and your buddy will be slowing down the whole course.

I bought a dozen of these and gave them all my golf friends for Christmas! Really I did. :/

I'm still playin my 804 OS, and I still love them! Bought a few sets over the years and ended up selling them and keeping the 804's in the bag!

I realized another one I'll add to this discussion this morning. The guy that always has an extra ball or two in his pocket at all times.

This tends to be the same guy that always seems to find his ball right on the OB boundary when it was clearly 15ft in.

Which is fine because, it's usually the same guy that doesn't take penalty strokes either way or understand how to keep a proper score. lol

To me, one of the greatest identifiers of a hacker, is the foursome that is dressed 'to the nines' in all the top name brand clothing and accessories, with their Titleist hat on, playing from the back tees and duffing the golf ball around.
