The main problem obviously is many animals have been introduced so have no natural predators, as race we have not looked after the planet very well.

 

Back to your squirrels, the apology is not enough, what you have to do is send them condolence cards just in case their children have been left motherless.

with good intentions. Sometimes it works out OK and sometimes it doesn't. I bet many people,

none here in the Grille of course, do not know that horses are NOT native to North America.

Horses are so much a part of western lore yet they were not here until the Spaniards brought

them. Can you picture a cowboy without a horse? Perish the thought.

 

Eucalyptus trees were brought to California from Australia and have thrived there so well that

many just consider them part of the California landscape. They are everywhere in the lowland

areas of the state. I grew up riding horses and seeing Eucalyptus trees in SoCal and neither

were native to the USA, much less the locality of SoCal where I grew up.

 

However.........HOWEVER....................I don't know what idiot thought it was a good idea to bring

a Japanese Ivy called KUDZU to the southeast USA. It is the plague of all plants and grows a

ridiculous several feet daily, if I'm remembering correctly. It will even overtake, swallow up and

kill full grown trees that just happen to be in it's path. It's worse than weed by far.

One the most invasive species is the cane toad. Originally around 90 were introduced to eat the cane beetles that were decimating the sugar cane.  What they failed to understand was cane beetles climb, cane toads dont. Those few toads now are in their billions all through Queensland and now down into New South Wales. The toads grow into a massive size, they breed like there is no tomorrow, they eat dog food, cat food, everything they can including small mammals and native frogs, they also have a white liquid that oozes out behind their neck if they are disturbed, this is highly toxic and will kill small animals that ingest it, we had a dog that caught one and had to immediately flush his mouth out with the hose, it is also toxic to humans and some had died from it. When fish eat the tadpoles they die, the only thing that seems to have them fixed are crows who flop them over and eat them guts first. We have hundreds of them all over our property, you dont see them mostly because they hide well but go outside at night and they are everywhere, we have wire netting over our fish pond as they will poison the fish. 
 

When we first moved to Australia we had not heard of them and a story in the local paper showed one which was around 10” dia that a local had caught, the story goes he dispatched it with his shovel, we were horrified anyone could do that until we saw what they did to our dog and then read up about them. The joke is always use a nine iron. Several ideas have been put foreword to eliminate them but no one has yet found the answer. Anyway this is one bit of nature we do not welcome on our property.

Interesting read Nitram. Thanks for posting the link. Thankfully we don't have this

problem here where we live but this is what Kudzu can do to the surrounding plant

life. Yes like the story says the fears of what Kudzu can do became almost mythical

and certainly overblown in past times but look at this pic. Given ample sunlight

Kudzu will indeed consume everything around it.

So, I want to start thinking about a few trips this summer to tee it up with some people from here. I’ve met some great GolfWRX people in Atlanta and in California a couple years ago. Some spectacular, quality people.

 

I don’t care how good or bad of a golfer you may be, it’s the remarkable camaraderie that is the common thread of golfers,

 

Show me a course or two you love to play near you. Show me some great food and drinks near you and I’ll buy. I promise plenty of laughs and some great stories.

 

I’m getting on in years and feel like I need to do this. I’m very late 60’s, but can still get it around in par or less. I can play persimmon and old blades or modern stuff.

 

My (much younger and lovely) wife can ride along and mix drinks in the cart. I’m hoping we can fly this summer...

Congrats to Lydia Ko for her 7 shot win today at the Lotte.  Seems like only a few weeks ago that

I watched her lose a 5 shot lead with 5 holes to play and lose to Danielle Kang. Considering her final

round 62 at the ANA and now shooting 28 under through 4 rounds of the Lotte, she is playing some

incredible golf right now.

 

Like Jordan she handled her long drought with class and answered every question. It's good to see

her playing so well know.

We have a similar shrub called Lantana, when we first moved into a riverside property, the council workers were traversing the river and told us we had to eliminate Lantana that had grown on the river bank, it was an order not a request, BUT, at the local garden shop they were selling the exact plant in pots, we reported this to the council, surprise, surprise, they did nothing but I could have received a large fine if it had not been removed. Does not make sense to me.

At 68 years old now I could not agree more. None of us are getting any younger and for those

of us who are retired there should be no excuses for not making an effort to meet somewhere.

 

Back in 2017 Grillester Scotee and I met up in Oregon. He and his bride and I had a nice dinner

at the Wild Horse Casino in Pendleton and Scotee and I played the Wild Horse course the next

day. 

 

The year before that Grillester Michael C. and I met up at Kenny Perry's course in Kentucky.

We played 36 holes the first day, had dinner and then played another 18 the next day.

 

It's been 4-5 years now since these meet ups but I still think about them. I play golf with my

golf buds here at home in Bama but those rounds are normal rounds and not particularly

memorable and over time I don't remember one round from another. I have fond memories

of the time I spent with Scotee and his bride and the time spent with Michael C. These are

memories that last and I am grateful for the camaraderie and the fun we had.

 

I am happy to meet up with any fellow Grillester or WRXer to play some golf and have fun.

Even better, I would really enjoy a Grille Golf adventure where many of us show up. I think

all who would show up would have a blast and make lasting memories...so let's decide on

a time and place and make it happen!

I can say with certainty that I won't be joining you this year.  Not by choice mind you, but that's the reality of the current situation, especially north of the border.  We have a cruise booked for April 2022 to Hawaii and I'm beginning to wonder if that will even be possible?

 

I do however, expect to be able to read a full reporting of events from those who ,are fortunate enough to participate.  I will live vicariously through your exploits! ⛳🏌️‍♂️🍸🥘🏆

Decided that with all this extra spare time thrust upon me that it would be a good time to order some grips and replace the grips on my woods/hybrid.  I got one of those newish Lamkin Sonar + wrap calibrate grips as part of a promotion last summer and installed that on my driver over the winter.  Considering how well I have been driving the ball so far, I think that these reminder grips are helping so I thought that I should put them on my fairways and hybrid.

 

Ordered up a few grips from Golfworks and received notification that everything is on backorder.  Perhaps you would prefer something else in stock?  Ho hum, what's the point?  The expected fulfillment date is December!  Why even offer it on your website?

Did you put in your order on computer or by phone?  The reason I ask is because a lot of times especially recently the website has not been updated. Last stuff I ordered was in January and that was Bear's shafts and grips. He wanted them ASAP and so we did next day air ( Hey it's his dime). All components arrived on time as advertised.

 

I know too it is having to do with imports and the current situation. The cargo ships are stacked up deep in LA Long Beach trying to get unloaded. Also exporters are having trouble finding shipping containers. Then on the trucking end companies are having trouble finding drivers. Even here locally-- I have had like 4 calls from local people I know wanting to know if "I want a driving job"  Nope can't because my medical certificate is pulled and the docs say I can not take a pounding in a truck any more. Basically I was retired anyhow and now my lawyers have put in for my disability. A guy I know is in the golf distribution business and he told me he had like 100 dozen balls and several component pieces stuck waiting to unload in LA. He told me Tuesday that they may get his stuff in to unload in 2 weeks. He told me he is about fed up and thinking of shutting down and retiring

I ordered online.  I didn't get the update until they sent my the confirmation email.  I'm going to call them this morning and have the order canceled.  I found a vendor on eBay and can get a better price that way for the Sonar Calibrate grips than through Golfworks.  Not sure I'll get them any quicker having to cross the border, but it is what it is.  The grip removal tool and putter grip will have to wait.  Maybe I'll just sell the putter as is with a SuperStroke on it.

Things are getting a little bit testy up here.  They've already begun to back off some of the restrictions that were announced Friday when the police refused to do random checks to make sure people weren't out and about for non essential reasons.

 

I'm wondering if they might back off of some of the outdoor activity restrictions as the science doesn't seem to support shuttering those.  Perhaps not right away, but I suspect that they will be the first things to reopen.

Spoke with Golfworks directly this morning.  They will ship out part of the order ASAP and the balance will come later when it comes in at no additional charge.  The December backorder date is just used as a placeholder until they get confirmation from the supplier.  The expectation is that it will be in stock by June based on past experience.  I can stick with that for the time being.

We have a golf works in Australia, its the opposite side of the country but usually orders are delivered within 24 hrs. Also a very good customer service line.

So took the daughter out yesterday afternoon for her first round on a course since last autumn. 

 

We decided that rather than play individual balls it would be more fun to play a 3 man scramble, will be a little quicker but mainly it would take the pressure of daughter to think about score and allow her to just hit shots. 

 

While it was obvious she was rusty, she was swinging really well (just not hitting the ball as good as her swing) but most importantly she really enjoyed it, especially as the weather was glorious. 

 

Her highlight was a solo par on the 132 yards Par 3 4th hole. She hit 3 wood about 4 yards short of the green, hit a wedge to about 12 feet and managed to read and hole the putt. She hit a few more good shots after that by the end of 9 holes her legs were tired. We stopped and enjoyed a beer/fruit juice after the round talking to some other members. 

 

Can't wait for two weeks to take her out again.

I doubt it.  We are currently in the midst of a mandated 4 week lockdown that includes the shuttering of golf courses.

 

The daily case counts have seemed to plateau for the time being, but the numbers hospitalized just continues to grow.  Talk of triage and rationing medications highlights how grim the current situation is.  Continued delays in the shipment of vaccines only makes matters worse.

Just got off the phone with #2 son who lives in BC in the Okanagan Valley.  It's his birthday today.  They are going to celebrate after dinner by going to the beach.  It's 25°C there today!  

 

The snow from this morning is pretty much gone by now.  It's still pretty chilly out though.  From beach weather to a snow storm all in one day.  Only in Canada you say?  It will be interesting to see what sort of "frost damage" we have suffered with all the new growth in our flowering shrubs, trees and perennials.  I suspect that the Magnolias may have been cooked!

We are now into our winter deserts, berries in abundance as the summer is too hot. DW did this one today.

 

Dutch pancakes, heated up in butter, Cinnamon and icing sugar.

 

Served with Strawberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Blue berries, a large spoon of thick cream and sprinkled with fresh mint. 
 

Gus is thinking of serving this up in the summer.
