I'm going to show you some food from Japan that was so good, I had to take a photo. I really learned to appreciate a great curry. I had not had much before moving to Japan, but some of the curry from the Indian and Nepalese cooks was extraordinary. Look at this delicious sag curry and naan served hot from the tandoor oven. Then tonkatsu (fried pork. Those are gigantic fried shrimp at the top). Then some ramen and then a typical lunches served at a golf course in between nines.

 

 

I feel like living in England, Curry is a stable part of the diet. We have an amazing curry house just down the road, it's pricey but worth the the treat.

 

My personnel favorite Japanese dish is Tonkatsu, so much so that the wifey has taken to making it at home now for me when I'm a good boy and earn it.

Yesterday they reported on 30 covid related deaths so the general populace has the opinion we are through the worst of it. However with lockdown lifting 2 days ago it seemed everyone went mad with freedom. Apparently the Primark in Cambridge had a 75m long que at opening time (7am).

 

My concern is that everyone forgets about any form of social distancing or even the concept of personal space and we have another spike and lockdown 4.0. However if the government try to implement that they may have riots to contend with. 

 

I can get back out to golf, play with my usual groups and some day soon be able to take the damn flag out. Then I'll be a happy camper.

I was fortunate to work with an Indian lady in my office for several years and once a month she would make a curry for everyone. 

 

Authentic Indian curry is not like the tikka masalas and vindaloos you get in takeaway restaurants. They don't have name and every family seems to have their own family recipe. They are neither hot nor mild, but full of spice and flavor and created to the instructions of the chefs palette.

They call American food "one plate meal." A hunk of meat on a plate with a potato.

 

Japanese chefs travel the world for years to study the best cuisines. Then they return to Japan and kind of make it their own with the best that they learned. The best French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish food I've ever had was in Japan. Tokyo has the most Michelin Star restaurants in the world and more than the 5th through 10th cities combined.

Personally, if I had to eat from just one cooking style it would be Italian

Incredible variety from  Mediterranean seafood, red sauce from Naples to almost Swiss like pastry from the North

 

I grew up with lots of Japanese food as my Dad had a Judo Dojo ( 3rd degree black belt from Kodokan)  and I love it but does not compare to Italian

 

Japan cannot compare on breads and pastries or wine

Oh I have. My mother used to make a curry gravy to top chicken livers. Chicken livers grilled

with onions and bacon and topped with the curry gravy and served with sliced peaches. I

have not had it since she passed in 1994. It was a family favorite.

I'll use that term loosely, because I didn't play or score at all well, but I did make some really nice shots.  I just couldn't pitch or putt today for anything.  It was particularly frustrating on the par 5 15th -- we played the back nine today -- when I striped my drive right down the middle and then followed that up with a perfect 7W to about 50 yards.  I then proceeded to blade my SW across the green to land 50 yards on the other side and guess what?  I did the exact same thing again coming back!!  Funny how you can cover 400 yards in 2 shots and then take 5 more to get it in the hole! 😳

 

I had an opportunity to hit this new to me 6 hybrid a couple of times.  Worked great on an approach and even better on my final tee shot from 135.  Looked further than that from the tee, but that's what my GPS said.  In fact, I hit the green with my tee shot on all three par 3 holes today which is rarity.  Didn't get much to show for it, but at least we're headed in the right direction.  If nothing else I'm getting the top end of the bag sorted out.  The scoring clubs; well let's just say that more work is needed on that front.

We were supposed to have rain starting around 1PM today so I decided to just go practice til

the rain showed up. I wanted to test out my new G410 hybrids and just hit balls in general.

 

I cranked the 17 degree hybrid down to 15.5 degrees but that also opened the face and I was

hitting low fades with it so I set it back to 17 degrees and my ballflight was higher and straighter.

The Red CB Alta shaft Ping put in the G410 series seems to be a stouter shaft than the previous

CB Alta shafts. I have a stiff flex in this 17 degree hybrid. I bought it with the stiff so I would get

a lower more penetrating flight.  I bought the 19 degree one with an R flex to get a higher

ballflight. I'm pretty much getting the ballflights I want with each of them but was surprised by

how strong these shafts are.................I really like them but I gotta put a good swing on them to

get the results I want.

 

After awhile the practice areas emptied out because of the impending rain I guess, so I had

the practice areas to myself. I spent some good time in the sand with my 54 and 60 degree

wedges and then took the 60 degree 10-30 yards out from the green and just practiced

hitting shots using the bounce.

 

It felt really good to practice. Perhaps I'll get back in that mode again rather than just only

playing rounds. I need the practice..................must admit.

Hey, no insults to Italian grandmothers! I love Italian food, but didn't have an Italian grandmother. I gained 3lbs just typing "Italian food."

Curry!  Love it. I spent a year in Thailand as a boy. My aunt was a dietitian at a hospital and a very good cook. We had a cook (and a housekeeper) that used her recipes along with traditional ones and we ate very well.  I learned how to make several kinds of curry and they are family favorites.

 

As to the Corona situation:  I like it poured over ice with lime juice and salt with or without tomato juice and hot sauce for a refreshing Michelada.

DW was making a green curry this morning and wanted some limes, so off I went to the paddock to pick limes. We have a large lime tree that is full of fruit all year round, if it starts to empty we just put plenty of water and within weeks the small fruit have set again.

 

Anyway that bit was an aside from the reason for the post.

 

In Australia, dont know if anyone else has them, we have a wasp called a paper wasp, the build nest just about anywhere, side of a house, in the tree, on a fence, anywhere.  The nest as the name implies is made from a type of paper, and normally hangs literally from a single thread, the one in our lime tree this morning was made to look like a branch, so I never saw it, and they are usually very quiet unless that is you disturb them, then they are extremely quick and do not need to land to sting, you do not hear them until after you feel them. This morning whist out picking limes, I inadvertently disturbed them, the nice ripe large lime I wanted was right next to the nest, I did not hear them until after the pain, then it is too late. They sting very quickly, never landing and always come back for a second go.

 

I think there must have been around 40/50 stings altogether, it was very painful but now around two hours later it has gone, thanks in someway to DW and her bottle of lavender oil.

 

And yes I am OK, thanks for asking.😬

Been ages since I pulled up to the bar ; )

 

One thing about “Italian” or any national cuisine, for that matter, is that everything is local.

 

Just like how in the US, you got bbq (and so many bbq variations from state to state or even county to county) in the south and clam chowder in the northeast, and everything in between, all depending on what’s grown and caught in your “back yard”. 

 

There are major differences between Northern Italian and Southern Italian food and then dozens of distinctions ranging all over each region depending on what is grown and caught locally. 
 

So, whether it’s Japanese, Mexican, French, or American, there’s incredible variety to be enjoyed within each “national” cuisine.

DW cooks many of those styles listed on the map, she always cooks to the authentic recipes, having a very large collection of herbs and spices makes it easy.

 

Today we had a green curry with the addition of Vietnamese mint, it gives a very distinctive taste. Only started using it this year.

We don't have Paper Wasps I suppose but just plain old wasps. Had a similar experience many years ago when our kids were tiny. Missus had just put our youngest to lunchtime sleep and closed the door. My brother-in-law and her woman had just got their first kid and we had some newborn baby stuff for them to borrow. So I was sent up to the attic, a trap door on the ceiling just outside from where my daughter was sleeping. Coming up i noticed some wasps but didnt mind much, grabbed the big paper box (moving box we call them here) and went down the ladder.  Bang, the lid opens and like hundreds of wasps comes out. The nest was in the box!

Those litte guys wasnt too happy about me carrying away with their home, they charged. I had to run like hell, out of the house and when they were ready with me, like 100 meters from our house I had those 40-50 stings too. I was sure I was going to get some kind of shock, I had been stung like grabbing a wasp before feeling sick afterwards, but I guess the stings they deal out when attacking an intruder is more of a corrective sting. I was ok afterwards.

But then the best part - Missus realized - There are 500 angry wasps on the second floor and my daughter is sleeping nearby. What if she wakes up, comes out of the room...  She took her jacket on, took a spray can Pesticide called "Radar" and went on the charge.
 

She running the vacuum cleaner afterwards one could hear like "frrrr" with dead wasps being sucked up from the floor. Some moments of drama....

Paper wasps dont chase you, they only attack when you are really close to their nest, then watch out you do not see the attack they are that quick .

Looks like I'll be putting the golf clubs away for a while now.  The situation has spun out of control such that all venues considered non essential are being closed effective immediately.  To be honest, when I went to the local course for a game Wednesday it was a sh*t show.  No masks and a slew of people lined up waiting on the first tee.  I sorta knew in my heart of hearts that this was going to be inevitable.

 

I played yesterday too in my Thursday men's league game and despite the frigid temperature had a pretty decent game.  At least I got to end on a good note.  I won't be surprised if it's June before we're allowed out again.  I expect that we will begin to see protests with increasing frequency.  It's all really quite depressing...

Cobi bought a Squirrelinator. It's basically a cage with one way doors where squirrels are

lured in with food and then can't get back out. Well......it's working. I've made 3 trips the

past 3 days relocating caught squirrels to new homes on the other side of freeways and

rivers; so they can't come back.

 

In my mind I think this an exercise in futility but Cobi is convinced we can make a serious

dent in the local squirrel population thus more berries and fruits for us and less for the

trespassing squirrels. We'll see. Directly across the street from us, both front and back,

are woods......and in my mind an endless population of multiplying squirrels......squirrels

who have not been impressed by fake snakes, fake owls or any other fakery.

It is illegal  in Queensland for a householder to relocate animals, it has to be done by the appropriate authority, mainly because of the possibility of causing social distress and removing a mother from her babies. Animals have also been killed trying to get back.

 

We have golfers complain about the kangaroos and turkeys on the course, not understanding that we have dispossessed them from their grazing so we could swear and curse over a little white ball.

 

We also have a family of pet bush rats we leave food out for every night, they are no problem as they know where to find a meal so do not bother us. Not a greenie but we love all the animals that come round, thats one of the main reasons we moved here.🤷‍♂️ We have a forest that backs up to our property, full of everything from venomous snakes to 7ft kangaroos.

Just finished our ninth and very last floating floor, it is in the walk in wardrobe in our bedroom. Cleared it out yesterday, started 8-30, finished 11-0, getting quick at it now, then 30 mins to load everything back inside.

 

No more ever, no matter what the circumstances, 79 next week and it is getting past a joke carrying on as if I was 15.😡

Sad to hear, wouldn’t be surprised if something similar will happen here, our town is like in our national media. University town, students not respecting social distancing, intensive care jammed.

The entire province of Ontario.  One million square kilometers and a population of 14.5 million people.  It would be the equivalent landmass of all of Scandinavia, including Finland and Iceland.

 

I can't speak to the other provinces, but I would be surprised if the situation isn't the same in Quebec.

 

We've been under some form of significant restriction since before Christmas.  The hope that the situation would improve sufficiently such that this summer might be similar to last summer has all but faded away IMO.

It's not illegal here.  We have friends that have a small farm and when the squirrels started to

raid their blueberry bushes they went out there and started shooting them. The ones that 

survived ran off and no squirrel has been seen near their blueberry bushes in 2 years. I guess

the word got out. At least I'm not shooting them, lol.

 

Squirrels are considered pests around here even though they look all cute and cuddly to some.

Many of them have rabies and other diseases and they will consume and/or ruin much of

your fruit and berry crop if you don't do something to stop...or at least slow them down.

 

Whether a plant is wanted....or just a weed, depends on where you live. When I lived in Cal,

I did not want Bermuda grass in my fescue lawn. It was invasive and very hard to get rid of

once it got a foothold. Here in Alabama, Bermuda grass is your golf course and certain

versions of it very desirable.

 

Likewise, you travel out west in the USA towing a boat and you are required to stop at state

lines for an inspection because they DO NOT want you to bring certain aquatic species into

one state from another. In one state the species is welcome but in another it is considered

invasive and will overtake the more desirable species that currently live there. In other words,

that aquatic species in one state is a  beautiful plant and in another an ugly weed.....and not

wanted.

 

Growing up in Cal I always thought of squirrels and chipmunks as cute little harmless

creatures that ate acorns. When we moved to Alabama we learned they are not viewed

that way here. They are viewed as rodent pests that will eat everything you can grow

and pests that can carry diseases. They are still cute to me, lol, but I get the problem.

 

I'm not going to kill them. I just want them to stay out of our fruits and berries.  The battle

is likely futile but I'll fight it for the next few months to see if it helps.....and I will apologize

to all the broken squirrel families I've caused. I'll just go out the front door each morning

and make my proclamation of apology for all the squirrels nearby to hear.

survived ran off and no squirrel has been seen near their blueberry bushes in 2 years. I guess

the word got out. At least I'm not shooting them, lol.

 

Squirrels are considered pests around here even though they look all cute and cuddly to some.

Many of them have rabies and other diseases and they will consume and/or ruin much of

your fruit and berry crop if you don't do something to stop...or at least slow them down.

 

Whether a plant is wanted....or just a weed, depends on where you live. When I lived in Cal,

I did not want Bermuda grass in my fescue lawn. It was invasive and very hard to get rid of

once it got a foothold. Here in Alabama, Bermuda grass is your golf course and certain

versions of it very desirable.

 

Likewise, you travel out west in the USA towing a boat and you are required to stop at state

lines for an inspection because they DO NOT want you to bring certain aquatic species into

one state from another. In one state the species is welcome but in another it is considered

invasive and will overtake the more desirable species that currently live there. In other words,

that aquatic species in one state is a  beautiful plant and in another an ugly weed.....and not

wanted.

 

Growing up in Cal I always thought of squirrels and chipmunks as cute little harmless

creatures that ate acorns. When we moved to Alabama we learned they are not viewed

that way here. They are viewed as rodent pests that will eat everything you can grow

and pests that can carry diseases. They are still cute to me, lol, but I get the problem.

 

I'm not going to kill them. I just want them to stay out of our fruits and berries.  The battle

is likely futile but I'll fight it for the next few months to see if it helps.....and I will apologize

to all the broken squirrel families I've caused. I'll just go out the front door each morning

and make my proclamation of apology for all the squirrels nearby to hear.

Squirrels are not native to Australia, same as rabbits and wild pigs and cause immense damage. Cant remember without looking it up where they originated. In the UK there are two types the grey that is in plague proportions and the red which  causes no damage and stay in the forests. The Greys are on everyones kill list and they are trying to eradicate them, these are possibly what you are getting. We have other pest species, wild horses, not native, camels by the thousands, water buffalo all introduced by well meaning people and cause immense damage to the eco system. Possums which are native are protected, but I can no longer grow tomatoes where we now live as they love them, and no matter what I do they find a way in, we can also hear their chatter at night which sounds as if they are laughing at us. Cockatoos are also very happy, they love lemons and regularly raid our tree.

 

There are also travel restrictions on some animals and especially horses that get paralysis tics, have to be sprayed with an insecticide before they can move into Northern Queensland which is tick free. These are deadly to some small animals, we had a cat that was killed by one.

 

The main problem obviously is many animals have been introduced so have no natural predators, as race we have not looked after the planet very well.

 

Back to your squirrels, the apology is not enough, what you have to do is send them condolence cards just in case their children have been left motherless.

I wonder if Gus and the gals could cook up a bait of that "timber ham" over wild rice with some muscadine (possum grape) reduction, and some "cat-head" biscuits?
