I have such a bizarre relationship with smoking. I developed an immediate aversion to it as a kid thanks to my dad's smoking habit (he died back in 2010 at 53 due to, you guessed it, lung cancer), and never personally touched tobacco in any form.

 

But with that said, there is truly something about being in a smoky dive bar that just feels right. Of course my dad started taking me to those same smoky dive bars when I was 14 to shoot pool, but that's a different chapter of parenting entirely. 😂

If it’s any consolation, my grandpa smoked camels like a freight train from ww2 through to around 1982…he used to carry two packs at all  times , one in each shirt pocket.  Another habit picked up in France.  
 

one day he had a coughing fit and spit up some bad looking stuff. He said he decide right then that they were going to kill him , and he laid them down.  I never remember seeing him smoke a cigarette. So i know  he quit.  I was attached to him from age 3 to 21 🤣.    He lived to almost 90.  And lungs were never an issue.

okay, i’m off into the weeds again. we haven’t been there in awhile. let’s talk highways.

 

the interstate highway system was never designed to run through cities. it was to go around cities. highways running through cities are, well, stupid. and we knew this in the 1960’s.

 

the concept of induced demand was known. induced demand is what you see every highway gets expanded. you see it every city with highways running through them.

 

the more lanes you add, the bigger the traffic jams and the longer the driving time on the highway. people just fill up the highway because they think it’ll be faster, for about a year. then it slows more than before the expansion.

 

most people may be dumb, but the smarter ones did find ways to get to work faster by not using a highway that was full before the expansion from say 6 lanes to 10 lanes. but the dummies outnumber the smarties, so bigger highways are jammed even more with dummies.

 

all that land used for highways through a city is underutilized land. it would be better to have housing and commercial properties than generate jobs, income and even more tax revenue for cities.

 

instead, the highways are money pits, except road construction companies. 

 

we spend far too much on urban highways instead of better inner city transportation.

My old man and stepmom smoked. The old man used a lighter one time a day that was when he lit the first one in the morning. He said he started when he was 12 and he lived to be 82 with no cancer. My Step Mom rolled smoke like a hopped up Cummins Diesel too. She had cancer like 3 different times. Yeah I remain divided on the issue.

Know two people who died from lung cancer and never smoked. Known several who did and met the C. Find the diet connection as much or more alarming C in general. But even then my BII, marathoner, tennis pro, heathy lifestyle, lik10% BMI for 68 years, pancreas cancer. Lucky 2% who survived and luck was large that made it happen.

Yeah, funny how that pathology course can get you paranoid. I had some moles removed that likely were not serious when I was in dental school and also imagined I had some other diseases. I saw lots of pre-cancerous oral lesions and a few malignant ones. I had a pretty nasty collection of slides that I showed to high school kids.  Patients were surprised that I could always tell if they dipped. Even had a few women that did Copenhagen. I never smoked but grew up breathing plenty of smog laden air in inland empire So. Cal.  I am liking this clean country air here in the PNW.

From my understanding, only 1% of your DNA codes for proteins.  The rest of it is all non-functional junk.  So every time you light up, you’d better hope that any mutations that occur happen in the junk part of your DNA.  
 

If it happens in the coding part, hopefully the damage isn’t too bad and won’t code for out of control growth and replication. Certainly other factors are in play like genetics, diet, etc.

 

I sometimes golf with a Japanese casual tournament golf group in town and one older guy can’t go 20 minutes without a cigarette and he really looks like h e double hockey sticks.  Same with my high school geometry teacher.  Just terrible looking skin. The students nicknamed her the Troll.

cigarette makers started adding it because damn people were smoking less. it amplifies the addiction of nicotine and the fda said, sure, no problem - we approve it for cigarettes.

 

tobacco companies acquired processed food companies (kraft, nabisco, drink companies, specifically sugar bomb drinks for babies and kids) in the 1980’s to the 2000’s to leverage their knowhow to make people (mostly children) addicted. high fat, high salt and high sugar glop to make them addicted and fatter so they’d buy more food. get ‘em while they’re young.

 

they sold out when the plan of globalizing the crappy snack glop of processed food fell flat. the rest of the world didn’t want it very much and some ingredients weren’t allowed.

 

but the junk, processed food filling the aisles of grocery stores remains, thanks to big tobacco.

dont be that guy.  Which guy?  The one who forces borrows on people.  What does that mean ?  It means when you see someone doing something , a project , task etc.  don’t push your tool or method on them.  Offer it. If they don’t take it the first time. Don’t push.  
 

as of this second I’ve spent 4 hours looking for a Blankety blank grass seed spreader , that my wife’s uncle forced me to borrow.  I said no.  Emphatic no.  And later he forced my son to take it while I wasn’t around.  We didn’t use it. It was left in the back floor of my oldest work truck.  For safe keeping.  It’s one of those bag types you wear as a front pack with a hand crank.  We were sowing a turnip field and he insisted that was best method.  I use my hand and just throw the seed out.  I can control volume better that way.  Seeds are super tiny and expensive.  You don’t want them too thick.  
 

anyway.  My son cleaned that truck out one day to use for his driving lessons.  I remember him handing me the thing and some tools. But I have no idea what I did with it.  We don’t throw anything away.  So it’s here. But where.  Now I’m  likely going to have to go buy one to replace it. And it’s something I have zero interest in owning.

Don’t get me started on my wife. She always wants to “improve” me… clothes, social skills, sleep habits, missed spots shaving, etc.     I’ve said several times, after almost 40 years it’s a package deal. Good with bad. Live with it.

Ah this getting old stuff sucks, passed out this morning so the wife called 911. Had a nice ambulance ride and a whole battery of test, nothing is really showing as a cause.

They decided I should spend the night to run more test and do the heart monitor thing as I have a history of Afib.

At least they have the women's golf on tv......

Not only delicious, but I am a firm believer that the morning ciggy butt and coffee has a nearly magical effect on the body that is of great therapeutic value.  I quit 12 years ago and have never been the same.

Yep. It appears to be clean. Some mega tall tires on it.  Thats my father in laws style.  4x4 look.  🤣. But probably only 14 inch tire he could find locally.  They’re getting impossible to find minus ordering from a specialty place.  
 

panel fit on it looks good. Probably never been hit or apart.

I interviewed at Apple back in ... 2015 I think it was. 

 

Prior, I was all like super stoked. Like hell yeah, this is the PEAK. Especially at the time; I'd walked away from Hollywood advertising (I'd probably be a VP if I'd have stuck around ... or I may have jumped off the roof of the Roosevelt on Hollywood Blvd) and was just a handful of years into mobile development. 

 

There was some weird communication in that they were interviewing me for a manager role. Dunno how that happened. And I was in no way qualified for such a thing. 

 

Regardless, after spending a couple days on Tim Apple's dime in Palo Alto; I was pretty glad I DIDN'T get the gig. 

 

I remember waiting around for my flight home at the San Jose airport being all "Goddamn man, I don't wanna live here. All the chicks are ugly."

My 67 mustang had a 200 6 cylinder in it and was indestructible. I wanted to put a 289 in it but my dad wouldn't let me until the 200 quit running. I drove it 35 miles one day with hardly any oil in it hoping it would blow up. When I got home all the lifters were collapsed because of no oil. I filled it back up with oil and it ran like a top. It never would blow. Sold it a year later with that 200 still in it. 😁

My best friend of like 30 years ... he had a Honda CRX when I met him. He LOVED that car ... still talks about it. This just reminds me of when he told me about driving it from Miami to Chapel Hill once ... with no oil.
