Hey @Soloman1!

 

How come we can make nuclear powered engines for aircraft carriers and subs

 

but can’t scale the same type of tech/engines into creating power on a wider scale unless it’s with giant power plants?

 

It seems like there should be a way to make lots of smaller nuclear power “stations” and applications like we make  for carriers and subs. I mean, a sub isn’t small but there’s such a huge “size” difference between a nuclear sub engine and a power plant. 
 

I guess I could google it but you’re a genius so I figure I be lazy and ask you 🤣😬

we can, and there are several old and current companies with solid plans for manufacturing and underground installation in the 10,000 homes range.

 

including maintaining depleted fuel within the containment, requiring no transportation or dismantling.

 

the first u.s. nuclear plant in 35-40 years (?) just went online. i believe it was 7 years late and some mega money over budget. we’ve lost much knowhow in the industry

 

heck, i was going to be in the nuclear power industry, but 3-mile island changed everything. the site is still not cleaned up and decommissioned yet. not a lot of people know that…

 

my opinion is that there is a cultural bias against downsizing. it’s like everything has to be big. plus utilities are always looking for government financing. compartmentalizing means less of a customer base to charge. then there are state licensing, federal licensing, permitting, and federal and state regulatory bottlenecks in everything.

 

we don’t like nuclear power, but it’s the safest form of energy generation and clean. how many deaths from nuclear power? none in operation, but some in construction accidents.

 

new ideas that run counter to a cultural bias take generations to change. we couldn’t even handle the metric system…

 

off the top of my head stuff.

Not sure, I would have guessed a ren faire costume.  I think the shrine maidens at the big shrine near by my old stomping grounds wore red and white.

i was thinking (sorry in advance), that here we are living in the human era. we’re the dominant species for awhile.

 

all previous evolution just happened, but we're close to the point where a portion of the world could consciously affect our evolution through science.

 

we’re still primitive. 60% of the world population doesn’t have indoor plumbing. 1 to 2 million americans don’t have indoor plumbing, depending on where you read.

 

the rest of us can’t be bothered with two faucets, one for hot and one for cold. we need one faucet.

I blame the Masters, my favorite tournament. Everyone expects great golf courses to have immaculate conditions, perfect lies, stunning green colors. 

Greens stimping at 13 with nothing but perfect rolls. Fairways cut tighter than a muni green. 
 

I love the British and Irish courses, firm and fast. A little brown. Beautiful natural grasses lining the fairways. Bunkers with ragged edges, unraked. As few water holes as possible. Blind shots. 
 

Our course super always tells me after I say it’s too wet, overwatered, “DT, everyone wants it green and perfect.”

Love this, thanks for posting. I’ve said before on here, I love scruffy golf courses. This is a game we play outdoors after all….I don’t expect, or want, to play in a perfect terrarium. For The Masters that’s great! But not where I play. 
 

That pitch Cotton hit on #2 was tough…..”not what he had in mind” ha, I thought that was exceptional to get to 15’ from there in those conditions.

agree.

 

overseeding in the winter here contributes to high costs. everyone wants to see green, though. or so the courses think.

 

$100,000+  just for the seed, then all the prep to scalp the course, close it for weeks, saturate with water, etc.

 

dormant bermuda is fine to play off. this photo is all dormant bermuda with safe, biodegradable color sprayed on the fairways.

 

you got your green color at a fraction of the cost.

I love firm and fast courses. Not a lot of roll on my main course.
