Clubhouse Grille (*** NO LIV DISCUSSIONS ***) (*** NO POLITICS/RELIGION ***)

I tend to doctor most of my irons that I have played.  The current set came in standard length with oversize jumbo grips.  They were a disaster as is as I couldn't feel the club in the swing and I was thinning everything.

 

I set them aside for a couple of weeks to ponder and then decided to alter them to suit rather than resell immediately.  I extended them by 1/2" which is what I typically play and regripped them with std. +4 grips which I was trying as a lighter weight option to a midsize grip which was my typical grip choice.  I also added a bit of lead tape to the heads to get the swing weight back up to what I preferred.

 

The play of the clubs was like night and day afterwards.  Maybe it was all in my head, but I had no trouble hitting them after the adjustments.  The strangest part about it was that my altered clubs were approximately 20g lighter after the extensions, grips and lead tape was added versus the before weights.  Those oversize jumbo grips had to weight in excess of 80g for that to happen!  No wonder I couldn't feel the clubhead in my swing!

Great session on the range tonight with my daughter. I always come away from them feeling like I've learnt/figured something out in a different way. 

 

It's always amazing how the mind of a kid can distil information and convert it to simplicity. 

 

We had 100 balls. I hit maybe 25 to 30 in total and most of them were to demonstrate something or to test a thought she had so she could "see how it changed my swing".

She has a nice swing; simple motion and well connected. Not much can go wrong there. Dad is doing

a good job.😃

I don't do a lot tbh. She has learnt the ball flight laws so I let her try and figure out what she is doing wrong. She also puts the effort in at home to practice her swing in the garden and any drills she can come up with to improve what she thinks/we decide is worth working on. She is part of the junior set up at my club and did start having one to one lessons with one of the pro's prior to covid but obviously hasn't had any since Easter this year. 

 

Our whole philosophy is to just make sure the ball go forwards with each shot, that's the focus on the course when playing, get the ball going in the correct general direction and everything else will slowly improve.

I'm curious what you guys would suggest she needs to work on and if that aligns with what she and I think.

In all honesty Matt, I wouldn't change a thing. She has a better motion than most and obviously has spent time watching dad hit balls. She has a great foundation and looks like she's having FUN.

 

As she matures and gains more strength, you can work to fine tune as necessary. Just try and get her to enjoy the short game and putting and turn her loose to figure out how to get the ball in the hole.

Personally I do not think she needs anything----- And from talking with you I know you have the proper knowledge to teach her correctly with basically sound fundamentals.  I also believe with your background I know you can teach her the difference between golf and tournament golf.

Yep a great short game can cover a "multitude of sins" How do you think I got away with my mess all these years?

Ya, kids are kinda famous for that aren't they? If only we could learn as fast as they do. She obviously

is motivated and according to what you're saying is able to think things through when watching the ball

flights. That's pretty advanced thinking. Are you guys descendants of John Jacobs, lol?

HAHA that would be nice but sadly not. 

 

I'm lucky in that she is the studious type of kid and while it has it's frustrations at times overall I think it's better that she likes to think through things first before doing them. 

 

Short game is where she still struggles, technically she's pretty good in both chipping and putting but her touch is still not great. While she enjoys practicing horsey bowling at home (we scatter her toy horses all over the room and try to roll the ball to hit them but not knock them over) to develop distance control she struggles to convert when on the course. It's a combination of nerves at having to actually do it on the course, anxiety at being slow by missing and inexperience at actually matching power to the required level. 

 

When she said she wanted to learn to play I told her that if she was to take lessons then she was to take them seriously (a lesson she has learnt for anything, if you sign up you commit) as the pro is taking time out of his day to teach her when he could be teaching someone else and earning money.

 

Once we learnt ball flight cause and effect (if you do this that happens, do that and this happens etc) she's said it's a lot less frustrating than when she didn't understand why the ball went were it did. Knowing it doesn't mean you get it correct every time but it does make it easier to learn and less frustrating when it goes wrong. I try and explain this same principle to higher handicap adults I play with but they seem disinterested and just want a tip to help them hit it better.

I'm hitting the range tonight with a few friends, I want to do some proper practice as I've not really done anything in about 6 weeks but suspect we'll be messing around on courses using the toptracer there. 

 

Game needs some serious work as my ball flight apex is about half post covid what it normally is. I also have three new shafts to prep for the weekend. 1 no. three wood for me and 2 no. (3 wood and hybrid) for the wife.

Pity reasy is not posting at present, he is the swing analyser, he could give you a five page breakdown of the good and not so good points.

looks a pretty good swing to me though, smooth with a good follow through. It will only improve with her attitude, looking forward to seeing her on the tour.🏌️‍

Short game and putting is always how I have attempted to improve my score. Never been a long hitter so I have never obsessed with hitting them long off the tee.

Not sure about tour, her ambition currently only goes as far as getting a golf scholarship into a US University.

If that happens its half way there, best of luck to her but I would think with her talent luck will not involved.

 

I have been into sport coaching for many years, retired now, but when the really talented ones come along, nothing stops them.

Thanks but I'd rather she focused on the education and if when she gets out of college the opportunity is there then she can take it.

Got the boiler guy here today, then nipping out to pick up some grips and then spend the afternoon hopefully building a couple of clubs (providing one adapter arrives). 

 

At some time during the day I should probably get some work done.

Today was DW's last day at work.  Her co-workers had a small, socially distanced reception for her at work. It was an emotional day for her.  She has two weeks holiday coming to her so she will be paid to the end of the month with her first pension cheque coming in January.

 

WE had our final curling game tonight for what may prove to be quite sometime.  Our club is closing over the holiday period and then we later found out that our region would be entering a 28 day period of red level restrictions midnight Monday, so we'll be closed until January 21 at the earliest.  The board is having a meeting on Sunday and may decide to pull the plug for the season depending upon carrying costs to keep the ice useable for that length of a shutdown.  AS it stands I got 20 games in during the 7 weeks the club was open.  Most clubs in the neighbouring regions didn't even bother to open for this season.  The club that the kids play at in BC opened back in October, but they have been closed for close to 4 weeks now due to COVID restrictions.  It's going to be a long winter... 😕

Just moved my 89 Yr. old Dad from Arizona to an apartment we made in our shop. (Shopartment)  Consumed lots of time, work and dollars. He loves it.

 

So we can’t talk about the plague? Hope you are all well.

 

Conrad got put back together and is whole again. (No holes)

 

Gus and Tammy and Cyndee are busy with take out meals?

 

Some of you equipment Ho’s are still at it?  I think I need a new driver as the one I have doesn’t seem to go as high or as far as it used to. Can you buy a game?

So just had the dreaded email, course is closed still today due to wet ground conditions so that's this weeks round out the window. 

 

I'll probably head up the range with the wife today for some practice and to try out the new shafts we've put together but when it's mid December, it's depressing not to be getting on the course and making the most of the rare clear blue skies. 

 

On other news, wife has finished Xmas wrapping (without my help) so that's a win for me 😇
