"Can you be a little quicker than the USGA?"...haha, get 'em Faldo!

When the USGA wakes up they are going to try and give Phil a one stroke penalty from across the pond.

Just tuning in. What was the ruling they were talking about?

Phil marked his ball, placed his ball, picked up his mark and the ball moved. It was deemed unrelated and unavoidable and the world went on turning as if the USGA didn't even exist.

The USGA uses the exact same set of rules as the R&A - this situation is covered specifically in Rule 20-1 and its application was pretty straightforward in terms of the facts and circumstances here (and yes, I saw it live this morning before I left for work).

In fact, it almost seemed like Tirico was trying to incite or imply that an infraction HAD occurred when asking pointed questions to the R&A guy on the air (can't recall his name) after the guy explained the rule and deemed nothing hinky was afoot regarding Mickelson apparently moving the ball and his marker towards the hole.

Meh, perhaps just a case of Quis custodiet ipsos custodes, but I definitely wasn't a fan of the broadcast throwing the USGA under the bus. Unprofessional.

In any case, no need to pile on here, fellas. :stop:

So a ruling body made a timely decision (which appears to be final) without needing to consult 10 HD camera angles? How refreshing.....

R&A - "Mr. Mickelson, did you bump the ball in marking and replacing or was it after?"

Phil - "It was during marking and replacing."

R&A - "Very good, thank you. No penalty necessary, play well."

So that's how that is supposed to go... WHO KNEW?

I wish King Phil would dump those stupid gloves. The minute he put them on he started spraying it all over the place.

The Open Championship seems much more like a golf tournament for everyone and not just a select few. They also know how to fix problems and screwups they make, like at St. Andrews last year.

The best I can think of with this was last year and the wind. R&A apologized profusely and admitted they shouldn't have started, but because they did, it was important to try and play.

No way the USGA ever does that. Other things the R&A gets right is letting the course play the way it should, and the prices, and the pace pushing.

Prices for what?

Almost everything.

Right away gate prices. US Open is $85 on practice days and $125 on tournament days. The Open is £15 on practice rounds, £80 on tournament rounds, which is roughly $20 and $100.

And I've never been, but my GM has and said the price difference in concessions and merchandise is about the same as ticket price difference.

A lot to correct here. First off, 2017 US Open practice rounds are $50 for Monday/Tuesday and $60 for Wednesday, while tournament prices are $110 Thursday and $125 for the rest of the week. Prices for this weeks British Open are 25 pounds for Monday, 30 Tuesday, 40 Wednesday and 80 Thursday-Friday. Now in today's post Brexit world, with historically low exchange rates (1.3 pounds to the dollar), you're right that's about $105 for Thursday-Sunday tickets at the British, but normally (1.5-1.65 pounds to the dollar), that works out to about ~$120-$130, just about the same as the USGA. As for concession prices, I saw that a pint of Stella runs you 4.95 this week or about $6.50 post Brexit ($7.50 when things get back to normal). A quick search revealed that a Bud Light cost $6.50 last year at Chambers Bay. As for merchandise, a hole flag is $30 at the US Open and 20 pounds at the British (again, exactly the same in a normal exchange rate world). Hell, hats look a bit cheaper at the US Open. The long and short of it is, as someone who's also been to both a British and US Open, prices are pretty much equal.

I really hope Stenson doesn't win this thing - he has the personality of a boulder.

I really hope he wins as he has a great personality.

If you're into the whole monotone, uninspiring, snorefest type.

I can assure you he is not monotone, uninspiring or a snorefest.

He's anything but a snorefest. He's one of the best interview. He's funny and tells what he feels.

I can see what you are saying but really, if anyone can be accused of acting unprofessionally, it's the USGA. They threw themselves under the bus.

Anyone else watching Sky Sports at the moment?

The Skycam on the range is on fire?! That's about the only thing they have messed up all week. Their coverage has been superb.
