Any idea why Steve Stricker went back liking the Open Championship? He said he was not interested in competing in this tournament. Maybe needs money t keep the card?

 

A couple reasons I think. For one, the schedule usually puts the open at the same time as his wedding anniversary which he chosen over the open several times. This year the timing is different because of the Olympics The other reason is that he is getting closer to retirement and figures he's feeling good about his game so he is going to give it his best shot.

Surprised there's not much chatter about NBC and Johnny Miller covering the Open for the first time. Personally I am glad for it. The US Open doesn't feel as major without Johnny.

 

God I wish Miller would go away. I love Mike Tiricco though. He's blending in perfectly with NBC.

tirrico is great; like a friend watching with you...miller doesnt seem to know how to be a nice person, and he just grates on me, lol...joe buck is unlistenable as well...and, yes, i know, unlistenable aint a word, lol...i think an anncr has to have certain qualities in addition to knowledge; either friendly so you like him like a buddy (tirrico, nance), or a style that compels you to listen to see what he says next (howard cossell, harry carey, feherty), or something! miller just doesnt do it for me...just my opinion, of course... (and, to be honest, feherty is a little over-exposed on golf channel...not his actual show or color commentary, but a billion promos a day are killing me! lol

Steve's wedding anniversary is this Sunday. The British is being played the same week it usually is. It's the PGA that had to move for the Olympics.

Fox spoiled us. The other networks really need to step up their game. And as you say, I think this is the tournament that would benefit most from lots of pro-tracer.

The problems I have is:

Miller - Too much about "me" and "what I would do". No one cares what he would do.

 

Tirrico/Nantz - exactly. They come off so friendly. And despite knowing the game so well, they set it up and let the analyst take it over. Their pauses and go's are so perfectly timed.

 

Buck - I hate to say this...I worked at last years USWO site and talked to him...he's good. He just doesn't have the timing or the tone to really be spot on with it. I think letting him host pre-tournament events. Let Shane O'Daughnahue man the desk. I think Fox went too much "flashy names" than "solid announcers".

 

Ferehty - I love him. I want him more. Not analyzing but commentating.

Fox has. And that side by side this year was awesome.

 

I want some network to amp it up to this:

Shot tracer that's live synced online with what's on TV. So DJ hits on TV and on your computer or whatever you can watch pro-tracer from behind and above on the screen.

You must be referring to the excellent coverage over the last 5 or 6 holes concerning DJ's magical moving ball. You're right, they nailed it!

This has been a great watch so far. I really enjoy this course. I'm a huge fan of short par 3's and #8 is certainly one of those. Royal Troon might be "too green" for some but I think it plays well on TV.

When I heard them talking about how slow the greens were, I thought of Phil. I remember him saying that he likes playing on slow greens because he can just ram putts at the hole on aggressive lines and not be afraid of them going 10 feet past.
