Rory to start 2017 with Callaway in the bag!

Recommended Posts

Quick pic off the tv from coverage .

WTF is that?

Looks like an Odyssey proto, similar shape to his old Scotty GoLow, Cally are sure going the extra mile for Rory.

Yes they are, even put the cross alignment like a Scotty.

No wonder I can't get a straight answer to my questions on the O Works putters, all of the Callaway staff is working on Rors stuff...lol

Shot down twice

I got that you're apparently not a journalist but rather an accountant that seems to be in the know. But how would an accountant or anyone not necessarily within Rory's inner circle know the specifics of his "contractual" or "non contractual" arrangements?

"Trust but verify"

My livelihood isn't interdependent on what Rory does or does not do, but curious to say the least.

That's pretty slick by Odyssey to make the exact headshape from his Cameron M1 Proto that Rory used the last month of the PGA Tour season last fall.

Too bad Odyssey didn't make that shape in plain bead blasted stainless for retail because it would sell better than the horrible black/white Versa garbage.

That's not a cross alignment aid... Just a single sight line. The horizontal line you are seeing is the milled drop down of the rear flange.

I totally understand they sell a ton of Versa putters....to each their own.

However that doesn't change my opinion that the color scheme looks like garbage.

- Josh

My bad, sure looks like black paint fill in both though.

Either way, cool for Odyssey to hook him up right.

I would roll an Odyssey like this Proto for sure!

I can understand that it doesn't appeal to everyone and that's fine but You made the case that it would "sell better than that.... Versa garbage". That's a big leap from simply stating your personal dislike for it.

I find it kind of strange that Odyssey needs to copy both this shape for him, and replicate a Corza Ghost completely for Berger.

The Apex MBs are probably extremely close to what will be coming to retail with some slight mods for Rors. So are they a one-off, yes. Are they that much different from the production models...probably not. We will see when released of course, things can change.

I do love the muscle in the back, they don't look unforgiving for sure, not as easy to hit as the Razr X MB's I am sure, but worth a look!!

To be honest, that kinda speaks volumes on how they are feeling about the new insert Odyssey dialed up.

Yeah...maybe a big leap on my part but when was the last time Odyssey made a completely bead blasted stainless steel putter without any paint or graphics? I'd like to see a full year or two of sales with both options going head to head. Just looks so much cleaner and higher end IMHO.

I wanna know how much hot melt Rory has in that driver. Sounds way better than how they come stock

Also, there sure is a lot of proto gear for Rory to not have some kind of deal going. He may not be getting paid (no reason since Nike is paying him), but I'd bet there's some kind of deal going on here, especially when he's got irons and a putter that no one on their current staff has, IMO

It's the ultimate tryout for Callaway/Odyssey to get gear permanently in Rory's bag! And when you are a player the caliber of Rory, you get the best shot with everything...hence the prototype clubs. It would make sense for Callaway/Odyssey to put their absolute best foot forward as to try and secure a future deal.

Fair enough. Trust but verify is a good practice.

I've confirmed it with RM himself, and several sources within the company.

Next up on the NLU Podcast - someone from Callaway or Rory's Inner circle - to confirm or deny everything that Soly has said...

I would say that after having Rory on the Podcast a few months ago as well as a screen shot of Rory's M2 trackman numbers, and being SPOT on with the WTIB I think we can give Soly the benefit of the doubt on this one - he has a pretty DAMN good source from the RM Camp or horses mouth on this one... he hasn't been wrong on this one (RM) yet, and he probably has an invitation to Ireland in the Spring...

Soly did you ask him about if there's a pay-for-performance deal rather than a pay-to-play deal? ie Callaway will cut him a check if he wins, finishes top 10, etc.

i'm just too much of a cynic on "how the world works." when was the last time somebody inside the top 50 played anything without being paid? i'm a big rory fan, and would love it if he's truly just making the rounds between OEMs to try out everybody's best right now....i just still have a bit of skepticism. not that anybody cares what I think.

That I understand. I've seen it first hand with a Rory equivalent in another sport when he was testing gear trying to secure a new equipment deal. Rory is positioning himself for his next deal (assuming there isn't already one agreed to) which is why he'd have them make an identical putter.

Imagine Rory signing a deal and Callaway or him not announcing it or broadcasting it so everyone thinks he's playing the gear on his own. Probably a stretch since they're a public company, but that would be good, effective marketing for me and Callaway seems to be doing a good job marketing with this release

I've said more than I probably should have already on it, but there's more behind how I know he's not getting paid than I'm willing to share. I know that's probably annoying, but you'll have to trust me there, if you choose to.

Now, this is not based on any insider knowledge, but another thing you guys should really consider is the fact that he has openly admitted he may continue to tinker, and that the equipment could change week to week (which might be keeping me busy). He was tinkering up until the day we announced it, and is by no means tied to anything he currently has in his bag.

I think both would constitute a contract, which Soly shot down multiple times.

when was the last time somebody inside the top 50 played anything without being paid?

Off the top of my head:

  • Rory (M2)
  • Hideki (GBB)
  • Patrick Reed (0311?)
  • Phil (Rocketballz)
  • Gary Woodland

And Rory seems like a unique situation, he has a huge multi-year deal with an OEM that got out of hardgoods.

I'd game that putter for sure! Nice and clean with out all those racing stripes.

Plus you can scoop up your ball after your playing partners say that's good!
