If he was so worried about her and her surgery why did you even tee it up today? Give another guy a shot at the tournament. Tiger drama Woods 2.0

With no disrespect to anyone's family, I agree with this post (except for the drama part). I think guys who make it seem to forget about the guys who are still trying.

Very emotional in his presser, did I hear something about his mom going into surgery? Does she have health problems?

Edit: I see now she has lung cancer, hope she can recover.

Mom has lung cancer - sounds like she was diagnosed as terminal back in Australia. I believe he said he's glad he brought her to the US and it looks a bit more promising and she's having surgery Friday.

First off, I feel terrible for JD. Cancer sucks and I hope he spends some quality time with his mother.

But I wholeheartedly agree with the post above. If this was something unexpected that he was just notified of, I could understand trying to play. But he just took three rounds in a WGC event and a spot in the tourney away from Finau and didn't even finish a single round. If Day finished at least one round, I think I'd be more compassionate, but if I were Finau, I'd probably be pretty pissed.

They should let Finau take the L for the day and play out Day's remainder matches.

This is an excellent idea. Hopefully they make this happen.

Maybe his mom encouraged him to continue with his commitment to this tournament, and he gave it a shot but the anxiety was too much to bare?

In that case, I'd ask what he thought he was going to do Fri-Sat-Sun? He even said that he hasn't been able to focus on golf that well lately, so this isn't something that just crept up today.

Sorry if I seem cynical, but he took three rounds away from a player who would have loved to play in this event.

This sounds like exactly what happened.

“Emotionally it’s been wearing on me for a while. And I know my mom says not to let it get to me, but it really has,” said Day, who lost his father, Alvin Day, to cancer when he was 12 years old.

“So I just need some time away with her to make sure that everything goes well because this has been very, very tough for me. So I’m going to do my best and try and be there the best I can for her because she is the reason that I’m playing golf today. And family is first and it’s just a hard time.”

She has terminal lung cancer. Maybe some of you want to get the facts before jumping on a guy. A**holes indeed.

Relax chief. Guy withdraws after a history of constant illnesses and aches/pains. Wasn't crazy to conclude it was more of the same.

Thoughts are with Day though, sad story.

I agree with you. Regardless of who put it into words, and who didn't, I think many of us had an "again?" thought when we heard he'd forfeited his match. Doesn't make you a horrible person to expect more of what you've already seen.

Nomination for worst post in golfwrx history.

Oh for eff sake....it's not like he took away three rounds from 15-handicapper Joe Hacker. He took three rounds away from the first alternate, current #70 in the world. Other guys pulled out to give guys who were not in the top 64 a shot. By your metric, Dufner, Luiten, Kjeldsen, and the Kims shouldn't be in, either.

Nice pedestal you've got there.

I remember trying to go to work after I heard bad news about a family member before, and having to go home distraught afterwards. You don't know when it hits you, something small can trigger it. Fully understand that he wanted to play, and his mother probably did as well, but just couldn't.

My grandfather and I were super close, and when he passed away 2 years ago, I quit my job. Its life changing, so I don't blame Day at all for not playing given the circumstances.

No, I think he meant that Finau would have loved to play. Not sure how you would dispute that seeing as how he showed up to the tournament site as an alternate when he could have been doing anything else....

Who wouldn't want the equivalent of a brand spanking new corvette just for showing up and someone withdrawing?

Day earned his spot in the tournament (along with the other 63 guys)and is free to do whatever he wants with that spot.

Sure and people are free to call him out on it preventing an alternate from using his spot while he should never have been there in the first place with whats going on in his life. See how it works both ways?

What is with all these amateur hour freebies being handed out?

Like the automatic wins handed to Westwood and Leishman (and Perez, kinda)? At least Perez competed for his. He was 3up, -1 raw score. The other two guys get to sleep all day if they so choose.
