2017 World Golf Championships - Match Play

There's no such thing as an easy group or group of death in this format

 

Golf ( match play over 18 holes) is not like tennis, each and every match is not far off 50:50,

 

However "pure" or exciting, any kind of knockout format ( even with a group stage) , is basically pot luck

 

I've no idea why no one has considered using the Swiss system ( where you play someone with as near a score to you as possible each round), maybe with a final for the top 2 after 6 rounds

This solves the problem of marquee players being eliminated early, avoids more than 18 holes ( a half is a valid result), and allows "holes for" to separate players with the same score, and allows enough time for the best player that week overall to win

 

As it is, this format is a great opportunity for those players in the bottom half of owgr to get lucky and climb up the world rankings

Rory's drive on 12 flew the first fairway, across the rough, through the cart path, and on the second fairway. It's a 580 yard par 5 and he's got 173 left. Outdrove his playing partner by about 80 yards, and his playing partner drove it 332. I know we probably should dial back the ball, but that was entertaining as hell to watch.

 

That hole plays at least 80 feet downhill and I watched several players hit it over the cart path last year. Some then proceeded to hit it into the water.

It's amazing how flat the course looks on TV. It probably has more elevation changes than Augusta National.
