Not sure I agree with this one not being a penalty. This isn't a scenario of someone marking a quarter inch to the right, he completely put the ball in the wrong spot as if he forgot how he originally marked it.

Zero intent and zero advantage gained so a penalty would have been grossly unfair.. common sense?

No intent and no penalty given. I agree with the intent part as the mistake was made after a replaced mark but rules are rules and it was replaced in the wrong spot. Don't think it would have altered the result at this point. Be interesting to hear what the tour officials have to say.

what he should do is call a panelty on himself after the round as his lead is plenty enough to win.. that would be a great PR move for him and establish him as a "honorable" player for life

Disclaimer - I do not believe he would have missed that putt. Nor do I believe he did it deliberately.

 

He did gain an advantage, obviously. Using the hideous poker chip means marking it 90 degrees around the clock so to speak means it's clearly closer.

 

So I'll say again, I think common sense has prevailed but I'm amazed the officials haven't penalised him here.

No, advantage isn't an issue, although he gained one.

Yep, He hasn't hit many fairways and the rough looks much worse than it actually is. There's very little if any punishment for missing. He's just bombing away.

Prob worth trying to get the interview if it appears on line. The ref caught up with Rahm on 13 and spent some time talking to him and his playing partner. Have to say I think common sense prevailed - the subtext was he wasn't cheating - but I wonder if the margin was only one shot whether the same decision would have been made. He clearly wasn't cheating and gained no advantage - and it was a gimme anyway - can't think whey he didn't just tap it in. Not like he's bothered about protocol having failed to shout fore all day !!!

I don't think he was trying to cheat but I can't imagine any tour playing seeing that video and not calling a penalty on themselves. He made a mistake and spaced out where the ball should be placed. If that's not a penalty anymore than they've gone too far. If he forgot that he moved it a putter head away would that be okay because he forgot without intent?
