Torn Between Ping EYE 2s and Zings

Recommended Posts

I have two sets, Ping Eye 2s and Ping Zings. I cannot choose between them, but I have to sell one off. They both have their pluses and minuses and I'm having trouble deciding. I like the looks of both even though they are very different and I play them both relatively the same although the Eye 2 lofts are weaker. But, I have to pick one. What do you all think?

Zings were one of pings few mistakes in my opinion.

My dad had a set in the 90’s. Hideous looking and felt even worse at impact. Never felt solid

They righted the ship a bit with the Zing 2’s.

I’d unequivocally go with eye 2’s. Wonderful clubs. Always will be playable.

Why do you have to sell? At best they are only worth the value of maybe three rounds of golf anyway.

Go with the Zings.............If not mistaken, Ping engineers called the Zing Irons their best. Just be careful if they have the original KT shafts, as there was a problem with shafts breaking. Re-shafting, at least for me would be a priority.

Actually I think they were talking about the ISI's

Agree with nessism....unless it's a better-half thing.

If so, try to negotiate something else that allows you to keep both, and maybe get the little lady something to appease her

(I was gonna satisfy her, but....I know how the minds work on this site)

If you like both equally and play both equally then sell the ones that will realize the best price. Counter intuitive to many, but likely to provide for the best possible result when all is said and done.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Yes, you are correct. Upon reflection, the Zing 2's were an improvement over the Zings. To the OP, sell both and get some ISI's

I liked them both but the zings took a while to get used to and this after I'd been using the eye 2's for way long. Personally speaking they both ended up playing the same to me but the sings probably had twice the surface area of the eye 2 and performed the same albeit far less attractive to my eyes.

Hard fact of life is that neither will earn a sales price worth the effort to sell. I would keep them both.

In my opinion the two best classic sets of Pings are the Eye2 and the ISI. NOT the ISI K.

After that they started putting the stinking badges in them. But hey I’ve liked those clubs too.

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.

I wouldn't have to think very long or hard about it. If you HAVE to sell a set the Zings would be gone.

Unless you hit the Zings better, I'd keep the Eye2s. I was in the retail golf business in the early '90's when the Zings were introduced and they were a very polarizing design, to put it diplomatically. While the Eye2 in its various iterations had been king of the hill in proline irons for 10 years at that point, the Zings sold well initially and cooled off relatively quickly. Just too crazy looking for most I think. I got the following timeline from another thread here on WRX- Ping tacitly acknowledged its mistake in the Zing by the speed (for that time) in which it replaced the Zing with the Zing2, IMO:

Zing 1992-94

Zing BeCu 1992-94

Eye2+ 1990-98

Eye2+ BeCu 1990-98

Eye (Patented) 1985-89

Eye2 (Pat. No.) 1984-90

Eye2 BeCu 1983-90

Eye2 (Pat. Pending) 1982-84

Interesting that the Eye2+ was offered 4 years after the Zing had already been replaced in its lineup.

I’ll agree with most that torn between the sets I’d go with the Eye 2. That being said the Zing’s were straight up a performer! Probably the worst feel of any Ping though I mean they were so harsh feeling even in the BeCu version that you don’t know if you hit it flush or not. I played several great rounds with a set me father owned though. Too bad they couldnt make it look and feel better but have that playability that was outstanding.

I actually like the looks of the zings. The shafts on them are KT-M. I have ZZ-Lites on the Eye 2s. Ihave to get rid of one because I have gotten into a bit of trouble with my collection of equipment. I'm sure you can read between the lines. Considering the value of both, I could probably get close to the same amount for either. Long story short, whichever I choose will be what I play for a long time.

Well you kind of made your decision, perhaps sub consciously, with "I actually like the looks of the zing". Now the real question still persists, which one do hit better? That's the one to keep!
Well, I like the looks of the Ping Eye 2s as well. I just don't know. Performance wise they are about the same with exception of the weaker lofts on the Eye 2s. Maybe I should just flip a coin and be done with it.

No question the Eye 2's are the better looking club - although at the time they were the fugliest things I'd ever seen. Of course that changed when you hit them !!

The same thing happened to me with the Zings. One of my mate's had 'em and that bulge on the toe was so ugly - but god they went straight. The offset might have been less on the zings? Maybe? The Zing 2 fixed the look a bit, but everyone I knew went back to the Eye 2s eventually. If I remember rightly a lot of players didn't like the stock shafts in the Zing / Zing 2s either.

I think you won't be disappointed with either in terms of performance, but the Eye 2+ was a classic.
