Conditions were less than ideal today. This is a video I sent my buddy Bob today that tried to warn us things were going to get ugly:

Shot 78 today in some tough conditions. Putting and short game frickin sucked but just wanted to post real quick because of the ball striking with my irons.

What I worked on last weekend got some results today. In the wind and rain I struck my irons fricking beautiful. Hit a ton of REALLY solid shots and flighted the ball like a champ. My buddy Jason started tearing up. Exciting stuff for me :)

Riding the high of the Monte clinic and the wonderful ballstriking round I had on Saturday didn’t last.

President’s Cup Four Ball today at the CC. My partner was nails today and shot a 73 - crappy luck for him because I didn’t show up. I shot an 83 today and it was the wrost 83 I could imagine.

Tee shots: crappy

Irons: crappy

Wedges: crappy

Putting: crappy

Today was a kick in the ball sack. It’s apparent that I need to play more and play more competitive rounds to hone my skills. When an opponent and multiple time club champ comes up to you after the round and says “dude you have the best swing at this club... if I had your swing...”. It’s nice to hear and its a nice complement of sorts but it’s also evidence that I’m a complete and total underachiever.

I’m convinced we’re all 1/2 crazy for even playing this game.

If nothing else, there’s gotta be some value in knowing that a truly terrible round is still an 83...a few blowup holes or were you just riding the bogey train...?

It was a couple of double bogey’s plus a bogey train. It was a round that “could have been a 78” but it just wasn’t because I just flat out sucked. Couldn’t get any momentum.

I don’t necessarily have the exact answer for you on this point, but have you explored ways for you to “reset” during a round...? So rather than feel the need for momentum to get scoring back on track, figure out a way to mentally reset so that you don’t need a string of good shots or good holes to get scoring on track. I assume the crappy driving and approach shots weren’t egregious misses that cost penalty shots?

i know this round very well. one thing that has helped me is working on breathing and feeling comfortable over the ball. i think these rounds are more a product of poor thinking and tension than lack of ability/preparation.

I had an old pro tell me.

"First you will learn to play well by yourself, then you will do it with strangers, then you will do it in front of friends, then in a tournament."

I used to always fall apart in tournament rounds. I realized I was so over hyped and over prepared with crazy expectations. I eventually stopped caring about the result of tournaments and made it my goal to be able to play a tournament round just feeling like my normal self the whole time. Lo and behold that is when I started being able to play well in tournaments.

Best of luck on your journey.

No penalty shots... I was in the tress off 8 and 13. I didn’t have much to work with and my recovery shots left me needing more....

As far as mentally resetting... I’m extremely inexperienced in tournament play (2018 was the first year I played in tournaments) so I need to play more and understand what tournament nerves are all about.

I felt hurried/rushed not because of anyone in my group but I think my nerves got the best of me and it was like “don’t be slow, play your shot” even though I’m not a slow player it was like I was even more sensative to playing quickly.

+1...it's been a long process for my swing with lots of setbacks...but when you start to put it all together the results start to really manifest themselves in bunches.

.

Man do I hear that! Three levels of learning: from lesson to range; from range to course; from course to competition.

We’re all still settling into new moves. This just takes time. I was thinking today that I have a finite and clearly defined set of fundamentals now and they work. Next is just refining them and setting them into place. Just the fact that you’re not chasing you tail all over the place chasing this idea then that one is gold.

Patience... persistence. Rinse and repeat.

Edit: read subsequent posts. One thing I practice is how to amplify my sense of ‘centered, right now, observing’ as I make a shot. I woke on it on the range and on the course. I want to and believe I can pay attention to this and grow my ability to do it under competitive situations. Like everything, it’s not easy but so what. When I do it, I am not anxious at all and I am historically a notorious choker.

The past 12+ months have been a pretty substantial rebuild on the swing in it’s entirety. I’m trying to be patient but I don’t want to hear another person say something that equates to “your underachieving” which is exactly what happened today.

Golf isn’t just swing. Lots more to it. Shooting. 73, 78,83 isn’t underachieving. It’s golf. Heck Pampling shot 71 for the lead at the open then 86 to miss the cut. Im just went 64 77 at the Honda. Cheer up. You’re doing great. Just focus practice more on repeatability then mechanics. And sounds like working on trouble shots too especially with your home course. I plead guilt of too little practice from bad situations myself. Great lies on flat range isn’t golf. But you knew that.

But I bet you didn’t know this.

The comment was a compliment and you are receiving it in a way that reflects your disappointment, which is understandable, but hardly underachieving. Just went to a clinic, probably have a few ideas in your head, practice limited (?), maybe some strong expectations plus the added pressure, however that is perceived, making a big difference. Even without all the other, just playing in a tournament and taking it seriously if you don't usually do that is a big step.

Golf is stupid, lol - maybe you can't outsmart it, but just have to wait it out a little!

One of my favorite comedies and clearly Steve Martin's best - Murphy was just hilarious in his role of twin brothers. So much gold in that movie.

That my friend is golf.....Tour pros shoot in the mid 70s ....and they are in the range of +5 or which would make your 83 actually as good or better than that. I just played with a couple +3 guys on Saturday and they didn't shoot below 74. Heck, I shot 80 with a ball OB and some horrible drives.....but some shots that I hit were some of the best I have ever hit so I'm happy overall. You have to take some of the positives out of a bad round and build on them. As hard as it may be, I'm sure there was at least 1 positive thing. As you well know...gotta give changes time.

Well said. You guys are right. Maybe I’m so butt hurt because an 8 handicap shot 74 on us yesterday - that’s always and enjoyable experience.
