Watching some of you guys swing was like poetry in motion. And watching Monte swing was just disgusting in the most awe inspiring way. His whole shot shaping technique was unbelievable, esp with that UDI 2 iron lol.

Makes me want to sell my clubs and get back into knitting. I swore I would never knit again after the incident but now I know how much my swing sucks

Good meeting you this weekend. Glad you could make it. In my opinion, each clinic gets a little better. Still the most impressive thing to me is how quickly he can spot an issue and give you a few ways to work on it.

If you ever find yourself in the Phoenix area again, hit me up. I'm also glad you called me venerable instead of venerial

Definitely not venerial - no way! Good meeting you as well.

Broheim, flashbacks to Richie Cusack when meeting with Joey. So Cynthia was a no show at the clinic? Did your team win the contest?

Important details that the internet wants to know.

Cynthia was a no-show - pretty disappointing.

Guy - I see. Yeah we didn't have a competition on day 2. It was mostly working one-on-one with Monte based on his diagnosis give on day 1. Monte also put on a nice exhibition working through the bag hitting flighted wedges, shaping shots, hitting driver.

As far as practicing goes what Ive learned is I cant really focus for much longer than 20 or 30 minutes. Im better off focusing for 20 minutes and hitting only 20 balls than I am practicing for 60 minutes and hitting 100 balls. The quality of practice is imperative. And Im not an expert either - Im still figuring this stuff out. In the future Id like to practice with more skill-based practice games but Im still working to cleanup my technique.

I might start a new thread about this, as I'm sure everyone is a little different and there are many equally valid theories...but the general question is, when do you stop practicing?

In your case, it seems that a time limit (or ball limit) works best for you. What if, heaven forbid, you shank all 20 balls in the 20 minutes? Do you stop because you've hit your limit? Or do you run out onto the range and grab a handful of balls (no one can truthfully say they've never done that...) and hit a few more until you've hit a few good ones?

Or is it better to reach a certain proficiency goal before ending the session?

In either case, I think it's a really interesting question...

If I had focused practice where I was truly focused for 20 minutes and shanked 20 balls then a couple of things might happen:

- If I'm working on something new like a new technique then that's what I'm working on. To put it another way, in this example ball-flight isn't what I'm working on. My focus is on technical stuff and my goal would be to work to achieve the feels or the move that matches the technique I'm working on -- ballflight isn't the focus in this example so I'm okay to shank away.

- 2nd example, if I shank 20 in a row and I'm focused on ballflight then I'm definitely calling it quits for the day. I'll go work on putting or something else instead.

I'm not a practicer - to my detriment - but when I did take a set of lessons a few years back, I'd never get more than the smallest bucket (45 balls IIRC) or like you say, at some point working on something just becomes mindless banging balls.

I've regressed a lot due to too many extended (8-10 weeks) periods of not picking up a club, but short range sessions plus slow-mo swings with a mirror at home sure worked for me when I was making significant changes.

Good to hear you have that sense for yourself and don't try and "power through" and do more harm than good.

I did try to "power through" when I first started working on my game but after a while I realized it just didn't work for me. My brain in a fragile thing - I need to be calm and focused to practice effectively. If I cannot be calm and focused it's just a waste of time.

Monte sending 3W

Love the commentary from Monte

When I only hit one good three wood per quarter, it’s exciting when it happens.

One "good" 3 wood per quarter would be worth quite a lot on the free market. Dont worry. Anyway, NOLA confirmed yet?

It’s on. Just working on a facility.

How are things looking for Sioux Falls to happen this year?

ebrasmus21- so you say that you need to do a cast move in transition, along with the wrist flexion. Is the cast move basically the cast from Montes no turn-cast drill? And does that keep you from yanking the handle?

If Monte sees this post maybe he can clarify better than me. It's very similar I'd say to the no cast drill but there is some nuance to it. For me personally, since I cup my lead wrist at the top of the backswing I need to cast (ulnar deviate) and bow (wrist flexion) all at the same time. This helps me to get the club going behind me more aka shallow. This also helps me square up the clubface. As far as I'm aware, shallowing helps with all kinds of stuff, power, speed, low point control all good stuff.

So again, for me its not just a casting motion. It's casting + bowing to start the downswing. I'm a big-time handle puller at the top so incorporating this move should help me with that as well.

It also doesn’t have to be excessive - I’m not trying to be like DJ at the top of the swing but I do need to incorporate some of that wrist action to help my game.

In that slow mo video I posted I do this. It’s a subtle move but if you look close at my lead wrist in transition I start to cast and flex immediately. Not much is there cuz I’m still getting my brain to figure out the move but it’s there for sure.

Coming from you that means a lot. I’ve never seen my current swing before Monte showed me so I always thought I had a fairly decent swing. It’s just incredible what Monte is able to discern from watching you hit a couple balls, and how quickly he is able to produce the results we all want to see.

He definitely leads us all to water, it’s up to us if we are going to take a sip or quench our thirst.

Yep - I never stop my practice until I hit my limit goal of 20 shanks.

Lately, I've gone to the range and returned within 5 minutes (or less)
