Got out to Black Bull, it’s in pretty good shape. They must of gotten way more rain then in Edmonton, lost a ball in a huge puddle in a bunker haha. Tough track, I can never seem to play good there.

Yah it is super tough!

played their men’s open. Champ flight there are no lateral hazards…

keep re teeing until

you get one in play…

Got out to Highlands today, phenomenal shape.

Great pic! Course design like this gives me a headache. Effective area of that fairway is about, what, 5 yards wide?? Maybe its a little flatter than the pic looks. I am all for challenging a target line (and having to think on a course), but this looks like the fairway is almost un-holdable. Stupid! Unless that's a Par 3 haha

Any idea why the McKenzie insists on playing at garbage Country Hills? Several other spectacular venues in AB. Kananaskis comes to mind. If they are looking for ticket sales and staying near a city why not Mickelson, Priddis, Calgary CC (Maybe too small of a footprint but could dial up rough and dry out those greens like a Merion US Open type set up). Didn't Heritage used to host? Maybe its gone to trash recently too... ?

Haha yeah it’s a drivable par 4, but course was slow so we didn’t wait for the course to clear.

Anyone here have or try a Bryson DeChambeau style Arm Lock putter, any feedback ?

Garage engineered & custom built one using an old Odyssey Tank #7 that’s been hanging on the wall for a couple years.

The Tank #7 has a heavy head, bent it to add loft, now 5°.

Cut off a portion of the existing Flatso grip, added a shaft extension to get it to 42” length then mated with some hockey tape a new S/S grip = 21” length.

Was out practicing today, I stand more upright, more accurate on long putts & it rolls really nice.

Playing tomorrow hope to see some improvements.

If this Frankenstein Mod works I'll find a proper 21" grip.

A few pic’s …. enjoy.

Played bearspaw tonight. How come no one told me to not try walking that course? Man, that has to be one of the toughest walking courses I have ever played.

was in great shape! Greens were very fast!

didn’t play well on the back as I was rushing to get it in before dark.

The Rugged Outdoor Woman

During her physical examination, a doctor asked a retired woman about her physical activity level.
The woman said she spent 3 days a week, every week, in the outdoors.
"Well, yesterday afternoon was typical; I took a five hour walk about 7 miles
through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake.

I pushed my way through 2 miles of brambles.
I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I barely avoided stepping on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I went to the bathroom behind some big trees. I ran away from an irate mother bear and then ran away from one angry bull Elk.
The mental stress of it all left me shattered. At the end of it all I drank a scotch
and three glasses of wine.

Amazed by the story, the doctor said, "You must be one hell of an outdoor woman!"

"No," the woman replied, "I'm just a really, really bad golfer"

Hi Paul, my Frankenstein creation is going back into the crypt.

Got 5 rounds in with the Frankie arm lock & only made 1 birdie that was today, shot 77.

I found it was more accurate on long putts but I struggled on those 5-10 footers for birdie, had a lot of kick in par's.

Going to bring Scotty back out & practice tomorrow, playing again on Friday.

Got 41 rounds in since our course opened on April 13th with 33 birdies, Frankie's just not up to the game.

My experiment cost me the price of 1 Flatso XL grip that's been collecting dust.

Trust all is well, look forward to seeing you guys in Palm Springs this winter.

Cheers

David

Played Rocky Mtn Hs - Pine Hills today, course is very dry with no rain, lots of bad bounces, never get a flat lie, greens crazy fast 3 putted too many times. Watch out for the Wasps & Hornets, they're everywhere, one of the guys got stung twice while in the cart.

  • 2 weeks later...

Was in Ontario for a wedding, did a few wine tours at Niagara on the Lake had some spare time on the way back to hotel & stopped at Glen Abby was hoping to get in to see the golf museum & hall of fame, was turned around by security near the front gate, closed due to covid. The only way you could get to club house was if you had a T-T, green fees ranged from $80 - $180. plus cart ... maybe next trip.

Country Hills - Talons course is quite nice. I definitely wouldn't consider it garbage. They did let their greens get a bit unhealthy after trying to run them fast. Definitely a more refined course than Mickelson IMO. Played the track last year and there were tarps showing in multiple bunkers. Greenside waste bunkers with fist sized rocks. 😬

Not so sure about that assumption. I grew up in Edmonton and had situations where we went from +27C to 15 cm of snow on the ground in May and September. Calgary is so close to the mountains that it can snow any month of the year…(it might not stay on the ground for more than a couple of days but still)…

Aug 24th ..... Sylvan got just under 4" or 100 mm, no carts today, the greens should be great.

EDIT: Walked 9 this afternoon fairways sure were soggy & couple green were mushy, playing tomorrow hope it dries up a bit.
