Recent Mizuno irons not as soft as the old?

I have owned MP-4, MP-54 and JPX 900 Forged. When struck IN THE MIDDLE the difference between the 3 is hardly noticeable. You can't judge feel of a club on off center shots imo.

This.

Everybody, plug your ears with something(cotton, ear buds, etc.) then try to "feel" something. They will all be the same.

It is sound that delineates feel.

The 900 forged have variable face thickness which means the sweet spot is thicker than the rest of the iron. The boron helps strengthen face so they can thin metal out more and and get more distance and forgiveness on off center hits. Hit the center and they feel amazing like other Mizuno irons. Hit a toe shot and it doesn't feel like Mizuno butter but the loss in yardage is minimal. People who say they are clicky and not soft are NOT hitting sweet spot.....period.

I just picked up a set of MP18s today and thought they felt very good. That said, I do recall some of the classic forgings that just melted the soul they felt so soft. The MP32s we’re particularly sweet feeling. My personal favorite was a set of tour issued MP-14s I picked up for next to nothing. Satin finish with the “M” stamp on the toe and no other logos. They felt sublime. Perfect contact with the modern models feels great, but I have noticed the occasional odd feeling strike. I wonder if the makeup of the newer balls doesn’t have more to do with it than the irons.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but compared to mizuno forged irons I played in the past, both the JPX 900 tours and MP18 didn't feel as soft/buttery to me. Is it just me or do the recent Mizunos feel denser/clickier?

Denser/clickier would not be two words i would use together to explain feel in an iron.

What words would you use to describe feel in an iron? Not sure that the vocabulary is important here, but sound definitely has a significant effect on feel which is why people use words like "clicky".

The old MP14/29's were sweet for sure. For what it's worth, I hit the MP32/MP64 next to MP18/SC/900T before making this thread, with the same type of balls.

IIRC, the JPX series have the boron in them, which might contribute to the difference.

I'd say if the classic Mizuno feel is a priority, the MPs are the closest you're going to get.

Wrong.

Only the 900F have boron. 900T are traditional 1025 and hotmetal have chromoly(excuse spelling) in them.

The JPX EZ Forged have boron.

The reference is only related to the current 900 line: Tour, Forged, and Hot Metal. The EZ Forged are not produced any longer.

For some good info on Boron (of which each head has about a grain of salt worth):

  • 3 weeks later...

Hit mp5 today at local shop. That's the feeling that is missing in today's mizuno.

I use them right now, I hit my old Scratch SB1s(mp 33 copies) and they are a lot softer than mp5s.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that muscle backs like the 14’s, 29’s, and 33’s, will also feel softer based on the design, which was a true muscle back design with the blades mass located directly behind the sweet spot.

It was the material as well as the design that made these clubs so special!

To this day, the MP-14’s were the “softest” irons I ever played!

I think there is some real truth to this. I’d really be interested in the engineering of it all. Remember, the blades of today are generally longer heel to toe than their less friendly predecessors. While this improves playability, I have to think it results in the loss of a bit of mass behind the sweet spot, and, as a result, a bit of that mushy feel we all are accustomed to.

I have the 18 MBs and do not find them as soft as some of the prior models. The 14s and the 4s come to mind, in particular, and even the 64s seemed a little more muted soft than the 18s, IMO. In comparison to the soft sound and feel of the aforementioned models, the 18s have a little “brighter” sound response, if that makes any sense.

Mizuno is also engineering the sound of their clubs now, I’d be curious how the sounds compare “scientifically.”

Still very impressed with the 18s.

Played 69 and 4. 69 was softer than 4 for me. But when I tried my friend's 25, learned that 4 is still very soft.

And recently I tested 18 blade, they were also soft to me.
