Smoothest swing you've seen live?

Ernie Els may not have the best swing, but it's super smooth. It doesn't even look like he's hitting the ball.

Charl Schwartzl (sp?) is really smooth too. I once saw him hit about 30-40 range balls after a round with what looked like a 5 or 6 iron. The range picker got every single ball in one swipe. Every shot was exactly the same height, length, and dead straight. Somehow he had shot 75 that day.

I went to my first Tour event in high school, the 2003 John Deere Classic. I stood right behind the tee box on the 11th hole and saw Vijay bomb one down the center. Easiest looking swing I'd ever seen, and the first time I realized that my 7.5 degree driver (975D) wasn't doing me any favors. That ball was HIGH. I've envied that swing ever since.

And yes, the next season I spent my $300 on a shiny new Launcher 460 10.5 degree, because that was all that was stopping me from having it all :to_become_senile:

Good call. Forget how good VJ was. Good enough to be #1 vs TW.

In 1974 I was fresh out of college, still looking for a career. At home in San Diego, I was killing time that January when I heard that a particular player was going to make an appearance in the Glen Campbell Los Angeles Open at Riviera. As a Broadcast Journalism major, I had worked as an intern at a northern California radio station a few years before, so I knew it would be (back then) easy to call the event's media center and be granted an inside-the-ropes press badge. Since I wanted to be at the tournament early, I drove up the night before and begged an unused couch at the UCLA chapter of my college fraternity. So there I am on Saturday, inside the ropes at the driving range, watching the biggest stars of the day begin their warm-ups.

The crowd buzzed as Palmer and Trevino hit balls. There was Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller, all near the lead. And here came three of the four 36-hole leaders: Tom Weiskopf, Dave Stockton and John Mahaffey. But where was the man I came to see? Suddenly, there was a rustle down at the far end of the range. I could see the crowd part and out from the throng stepped the living legend that was SAM SNEAD. I quickly rushed down the line and plunked down right behind the 61-year-old master who had just come off a second-round 66. To say that Snead was smooth is a vast understatement. Try and describe poetry or a flowing water; you can't do it -- you have to see it.

Despite the presence of all these other stars, the many other greats in this game, I followed Snead for all 18 holes that day, reveling in my viewpoint from inside the ropes. No he didn't win (when asked if he had a chance, Sam had said, "If the rest of them drop dead") but of course that didn't matter at all. I never saw Jones or Hagen or Hogan but that day of observing, up close, perhaps the greatest ever swinger of the club was easily one of the greatest days of my golfing life.

PS -- Later that same year, having had a birthday,

He shot a final round 68 at the 1974 PGA Championship

to finish tied for third, three strokes behind winner Lee Trevino.

At age 62.

Charl Scwartzel... It will stop you in your tracks when you see it down the line on the range.

Have to agree. Saw him on the range at the Colonial a few years back and have never seen such consistent results. He hit 30+ drives in a row that looked identical.

If I hit two in a row, I'm in heaven..... :taunt:

There are quite a few, but Fred Couples is the first that comes to my mind. He was a long hitter in his day, yet his swing looked almost effortless to me, like a “caddy swing.” Always wished I could swing like him.

Ha, ha... join the club, buddy! :-)

By the way, Tom Purtzer was a fraternity brother of mine at Arizona State, although we never played golf together. (He was, obviously, on the team while I was hardly touching a club at all in college.) Everyone said that although older brother Paul Purtzer was an All-American, Tommy was the one with real talent. They were right.

Are there any of the newcomers in the elite that have really smooth swings? Most are edgy and look strange, like Spieth, Rahm anfd Fleetwood.

I'd say Luke List is the smoothest current bomber.

Another vote for Jacquelin. Contact with the ball is almost incidental.

a brilliant description that, incidental is exactly how it seems
