I had a dream last night where I was supposed to play a round with Rory, then I show up and it's a clinic with a million people. He was with Mindy Kaling for some reason. I was a jerk since I thought I was special and we were going to be alone, then he banned me from the clinic. This is surely a sign that he's going to win this week.

a friend of mine yesterday said in text message that he dreams about golf. i'm so jealous. i only ever have dark dreams. last night i was driving along and the road turned into a hiking path and then it got really narrow and i rolled my car. those are the kind of dreams i have. he dreams about flushing 6 iron and i'm avoiding death.

I've heard of the putting yips, the chipping yips, and the driver yips. Is this the first documented case of the wedge yips? I'm only being like 60% sarcastic here. Do you actually feel any kind of mental angst pulling wedge out of the bag on the course?

12 is playing 317 yards and has a back pin, and Rory just flew it dead on line over the pin, and bounced/rolled off the back of the green. His pitch mark was probably within 5 yards of the hole. I'm liking that pick so far. When he's driving it like that, he's in contention.

In this case, I mean in reference to golf swing. But, "angst" is not what I feel about golf fantasy. If I actually felt "angst" about it, I'd just stop making picks for the rest of the year. It's more a nuisance.

 

I know exactly what Fabb is talking about. He's talking about me on hole 1 at TV going, "I don't feel good about this 4W. I feel like I'm going to top it into the creek." and then topping it into the creek. But, I top 4W all the time, and as far as I can tell it's unrelated to whether I feel comfortable or uncomfortable over the shot.

 

Can my performance change based on how I "feel" about the shot? Maybe a little, but it's like 99% of the performance of that shot is based on the lie and 1% on my feelings. I just don't feel like I operate that way.

 

See, what Fabb doesn't know is what's actually in my head. I "neg" a lot of shots in my head that turn out fine. He might not do that. Maybe every time he negs a shot in his head it turns out poorly, so he just maps that onto me. Sometimes I'm over a shot and don't feel good about it, and back out of it and reset, or pick a different shot. That usually means like "I can't get this 7 iron over that tree". It's not mental angst, though.

 

Or sometimes I'm over a shot like that 4W and use the "neg" to actually get focused on the shot.

 

If I actually do feel "angst" over a shot then I either change the plan to something that doesn't generate angst, or accept that it's my only option and this also removes angst.

 

But, all that said, more than anything, I actually don't have a feeling that I refer to as "angst". Like a pyschopath doesn't have a feeling he identifies as "empathy". Words don't map to feelings.

 

The closest feeling I have to angst is situational anxiety, like if I was cutting it close to get to the airport and I hit a traffic jam. It's not existential angst over the fate of the world. It's a appraisal of my situation.

Most golf dreams I have aren't good ones. They're the inability to get the ball to stay on the tee. Then when I do, I look up and the hole has changed and I need a different club. Maybe I have subconscious angst. Other people have similar dreams. I think Siegel described one once that sounded a lot like the ones I have.

The last time I was in a pro shop that was selling them, the ones I was looking at claimed to be a "drifit cotton blend" but they felt suspiciously like "cotton-cotton" - IE I would sweat through it in 5 seconds in the summer around here. A lot of their polo shirts are even 100% cotton.

 

Haven't found any of their golf shirts yet that are what I would call a real drifit material - unless they call it something else and I'm just not looking hard enough.

I own a couple. I like them.

 

They are definitely sweat-thru-able, though. I like them better in cooler weather.

 

They have a nice weight and a good hang. I think all the ones I have are 100% cotton.

They're a little bit thicker.

 

AFAIK, they don't have any "modern" wicking technology, which usually means "synthetics".

 

I bought them originally for that reason. I always find that (most) synthetics really start to stink after you sweat in them a couple of times, so I thought going all cotton would mitigate that. They do a little. Maybe.

 

They actually DON'T seem to hold sweat as much as I thought they would. On a really hot, humid, day, I'm soaking through any shirt.

For the most part all my shirts are synthetic. That's good in the summer, but those shirts are unwearable in the winter. Death by static shock.

I have two Linksoul shirts. They run a little on the loose side for their size, but one has much thinner fabric than the other.

 

I like the thin cotton better than most synthetic shirts on the hottest days, but that's because the poly shirts irritate my skin when it's really hot and humid.

Synthetic socks are the worst. They're like a supercharger for stank foot. I have a few wool pairs of athletic socks I like most, but they're expensive. The rest of my athletic socks are cotton.

All my dreams about golf I can't Ever hit the ball. I'm in a doorway. Up against a tree. When I do get somewhat of a swing I always miss.

 

I should probably talk to a shrink. These dreams are trying to tell me something.
