2019 Phoenix Area Course Conditions

It’s a great course and the drive is why it’s cheaper, there’s horrible courses that are expensive because they are in scottsdale. But, I’m a bit of a rolling stone...

I had a Troon Card at one time so I'm still in their Facebook Group someone posted it. Here is the post

Shout out to all the Troon staff working hard today to recover from 150 wild horses running thru the course overnight. Just fresh from over seeding fairways greens and bunkers on 13 14 15 16 holes all ripped up. I love this beautiful course. Par on #1 hole gave me confidence to play this challenging long course. We will play again. #experiencetroon #withmytrooncard

Any good cheap muni courses in Scottsdale area that are decent?

Yeah, I've only played it once since my in-laws live in Surprise, but I'm driving there at least once this Christmas to play. I've played Troon Monument, Los Cab, Wickenburg Ranch, Legend Trail, and a few others I can't even remember in the metro area and Dunes is easily my favorite. I want to play We-Ko-Pa but I can't justify the price tag...especially when you can play Dunes twice for the same money.

Scottsdale has no interest in creating or maintaining a quality of life for those with less than 7 figure finances...Away you Hoi Poloi! ;)

best Muni's in the valley belong to City of Phoenix imo, Papago and Aguila (and depending on condition Maryvale/GCU) are all solid values, but a trek from Scottsdale, except for Papago.

Dobson Ranch In Mesa is okay, too.

TPC Scottsdale was once considered a municipal course, I think based on tax laws. Not sure if that is still the case.

Orange Tree probably fits that bill. In Scottsdale, looks pretty muni, $65 to play during the week. I haven't played there before, but played golf with a guy who said it was a decent little track.

I have stayed at Orange Tree like about 20 times 700 square feet suite and staying there this upcoming December have played course zero times and no plans on this trip as well

Camelback - Padre course sometimes has some good deals every once in awhile. I like the layout myself and it's usually way cheaper than it's sister course, Ambiente.

Raven and Legacy to the south are options if you're willing to drive. Aguila is good as noted. Eagle Mountain and Verde River are worth looking into.

McCormick Ranch has two courses in Scottsdale and there's Silverado as well (no range though). Talking Stick has two courses, North course being the better of the two.

I'd avoid StoneCreek - always a five hour round.

McCormick Ranch actually isn't horrible...it's totally out of place in AZ but it's usually in pretty good shape and has some good holes. I don't care for it much personally but you can sometimes get good rates and it beats a lot of the other cheaper courses.

Dobson Ranch yesterday - 40 minutes for 1 hole ; 4 groups on the 2nd tee box waiting. Caused primarily by one group who brought a dog - none of them could get the ball in the air. They were walking as slow as possible.

"Marshall" talked to them twice and they completely ignored him. Old guy in group behind me shouted at them and they threatened him and laughed at him.

I walked off the course and got a refund.

That is...something. I'm all for dogs on the course, but it only works when they're good boys and girls. I played right in front of someone with a dog in the UK a couple years back. Really fun to see them out there, but this one was an exceptionally good dog.

Played with a guy Friday who couldn't get the ball up either. It just completely ruins the flow of a round when you're standing and waiting.

Played StoneCreek on Friday. I was pretty impressed with the shape that it is in. I don't recall it ever being so nice before. Fairways were good and greens were solid. However, we were on pace for a 5 hour round. 2 and a half front and 2 hour back. The Marshall finally made the slow group 3 groups ahead of us skip a hole. For the price I paid it was worth it though. I just wish people were honest about their game and played from the appropriate tees. We all know that will never happen but wishful thinking I guess.

Cave Creek yesterday morning. The overseed came in pretty well except for a few spots on #10 and #18 fairways where the fairway isn't flat. No cart restrictions. Green speeds almost back to normal I thought. Ridiculous amount of geese and their p o o p on the last half of #14. Some spots with ponded water/mud along the left side of #9 fairway but otherwise the course wasn't too wet.

I played early enough that the pace was fine, but it looked completely packed later on, the group teeing off #1 when we teed off on #10 was standing waiting on #6 tee when we reached #18 tee.

They completely re-did the entrance road, leveled it out and repaved it. The bumps you could get air off if you were coming in fast and not paying attention are gone. Looks like the giant depression that forms a lake after it rains is gone too, as they have been re-paving the parking lot in phases as well. Not that anyone here cares about the parking lot at a muni, but my general sense is that between the paving work, the new bunker sand, the restaurant re-opening/renovation, overall improved course conditions, etc. some substantial money is being put into the property this year.

Edited because apparently you aren't allowed type the word p o o p on the forum with no spaces between the letters. Seriously.

There are few guarantees in life, but a 5-hour round at StoneCreek is one of them.

San Marcos on Friday, off CPO and in nice shape, greens slower but rolled well, fairways boxes and sand all really nice. $30 on a Friday 8am, pretty hard value to beat in east valley, I prefer the layout at San Marcos vs Dobson, just wish the greens were sped up
