Played mesquite today in an Itour event and was impressed by the green complexes. Hadn’t played there in 20 years I bet. Some

of the pins were silly. But it did seem like they tricked up the front nine and made the back much more playable.

They sure can put the pins in some crazy locations like but the greens are pure or at least they were last time i played.  Hole 3, 5, 9 come to mind on the front.  16 is still a dumb hole in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the advice on courses around the area.  I'm waiting to hear back from Old American as to whether I can get on the week before the LPGA event, but lots of other options by the sound of it. Looking forward to my first round in Texas.  Colin

Played the front 9 today and no sand at all on the greens.  It is getting pretty brown like most courses now but the greens putted fine.

Played Texas star last week. They had the back nine closed because they were punching the greens (did the front the day before). They verticut so was not really an issue course is in excellent shape.

If you have not played Texas Star, you really need to. Not that I have played all that many public courses in the area, but it's now on my list as one of my favorite public courses in the DFW area along with Heritage Ranch, Bridlewood, and Frisco Lakes. 

 

Loved the elevation changes. It was in excellent condition and, although my play didn't reflect it, was very fun to play. The fairways were softer and higher than I am used to but I don't remember even having one bad lie. While the greens felt a little spongy they rolled really good with some pace to them. They did have a lot grain in them. 

 

I would definitely go back.

The greens at Gentle creek were great Sunday.  I  hope the greens keeper was not as angry as he was on Sunday as some of those pin placements were down right cruel.

So Texas Star might be an alternative for me in September, if I can't get on Old American.  What's Frisco Lakes like?  Only ask because it is fairly close to Westin Dallas Stonebriar.  Gentle Creek isn't too far away it seems, but I'm guessing that is a private course.

Frisco Lakes is OK.  You might also check into Bridlewood in Flower Mound and Tenison Highlands just east of downtown Dallas. Both provide good golf at a reasonable price and are closer than Texas Star. If you don’t care about expensive check into TPC Las Colinas.

Gentle Creek today.

 

Have said for years, it is my favorite course in the metroplex and it did not disappoint. Fairways were in excellent condition and the greens were even better. Best greens I have putted on in North Texas in a long time. Fast and true. And @cjblake09, yes, a few pin placements on the challenging side. But I loved it. 

 

If you ever get the chance to play Gentle Creek, don't pass it up.

I had a look at Gentle Creek's website last night, at read various reviews.  Sounds like a very good course to play.

Frisco Lakes today. 

 

Greens were in good condition. Putted really true, had good pace to them, and were quite receptive to approach shots even though they were not on the soft side. Fairway condition were okay at best. Pretty obvious they aren't putting a lot of water on them. 

 

Apparently some new owners took over earlier in the year. Hopefully they keep it up as it is a very fun course to play. Definitely one of my favorite courses to play in the area. Would go back. 

 

One strange thing is that there is absolutely no merchandise in the golf side. Didn't really get a good answer when I asked about that. We didn't eat in the bar and grill area but saw some people in there and the food on their table did look really, really good.

Yeah the fairways are brown but i kinda like it as you get a ton of roll out.   I played Tuesday and took the right line off the tee on 9 and only had 125 into the green.  The same company that owns Bridlewood bought it 6-9 months ago and are trying to big it up to the same level.

Of the 3 courses we played this week, you definitely got more roll out at Frisco Lakes than at Gentle Creek or Texas Star. In fact, Texas Star was pretty much the opposite of Frisco Lakes.

At least you had a better outcome than I did on 13. With the pin on the front, I drove it up about 30 yards short of the front. Nipped it perfectly, landed just a few feet short of the pin only to see it spin clear back off the green. Putted up about 6 feet past the hole and missed the next putt. Nice bogey from 30 yards out 🙁

Indian Creek was ok today but man they have so many old hole marks on the greens it made it difficult.  When you were not putting through those the greens were nice and had a good pace to them .

I’ve decided we can never play together as you hit it too far. But then everyone does compared to me

Lol,I am not a long hitter at all just got some lucky bounces.  Most of the time i am in the 260-280 range.

The only way I ever hit a drive in the 260-280 range is to get a lot of cart path action. And sometimes "a lot" is still not enough 😉

Driving to Lowe’s yesterday, looked like Bridlewood punched and sanded.  Tee off in an hour, so will confirm.
