Just got an email that Cedar Crest is shutting down the course until May due to poa on greens. Anybody know why this seems to be a bigger problem this year? Milder winter?

I got he same email and was shocked.  Guess they want to get it under control before the city qualifiers.

Crazy how some courses are overtaken right now and some have zero issues but being public courses and munis.

Yeah seems to be a big issue. Duck Creek, Texas Star and the Golf Ranch (practice facility near UT Dallas) are all covered with Poa.

Course 2 at Sherrill park along with the chipping area same thing (Course 1 has some but way more mild and the designated putting area has zero poa).

Poa this year has been worst I can remember, but once it gets hot should be able to get it under control.

Bridlewood this AM in a tournament and it was ok.  The punched maybe 2 weeks ago but still slow and some rough spots for charging $125 now.

Frisco Lakes in the afternoon and it was good but they need train the greens keeper to replace the old holes better.  Played in a 4 some in 3 hours and shot 75 in this hurricane again today.

Looking forward to some calm days!

Bolded, the company that owns Sky Creek and Bridlewood just bought Frisco lakes.  The hole replacement at Sky Creek is horrible, maybe they hired the same guy. 🙂

Willing to bet CJ plays farther back than I do. I’m 55 and play most days at 6600-6800.

No fun to play that far back.  Just play the blues and yesterday was a lucky round as the putter and chipping game was hot, 27 putts!  I play to a 4 or 5 so normally around 80 some days lower and some higher although lately the higher has been winning out..

Will this wind ever stop blowing?  Playing 36 in this hot mess today at Tierra Verde.  I'm already tired.

How Is TV currently?

Fairways - great.

Tee boxes - need love.

Red dirt bunkers - unplayable.

White sand bunkers - pretty good.

Greens - some are superb, and some are eaten up with Poa.  I putted horribly.  Some was on me, some on the bumps.  If we can get a week or 10 days of good hot weather the Poa should go dormant, but at some point they are going to have to figure out how to either eradicate it or they are headed for new greens.

Played Texas Star today.  Wow.  A couple of greens had really bad Poa, but for the most part it was in really good shape.

Hawks creek had no poa on greens. Only tee boxes and rough areas. Is poa what happens when it doesn’t rain a lot?

I blame all the Californians moving to Texas for this mess...But seriously, POA is a never ending battle for Sups...It loves to grow in cooler weather and takes preempted measures to suppress and prevent...Once it takes hold, it can be killed or will die from the Texas heat, but the greens will not look the same until the areas are fixed...Smaller patches can be dug up and replaced with minimal disruption...However, if its infested larger amounts of a green, they're going to need to be placed or you're just going to end up with large areas of dead green which isn't too good for business...Sounds like for whatever reason, green maintenance wasn't properly addressed at those courses and they're going to pay the price...Players can help prevent the spread from course to course by washing their shoes after play so the seeds don't travel and infest the next course they play...

More water, more poa. Less water, less poa.  It adapts every year and lives through last year's herbicides (because whatever survived is still there, have to change it to something else).

Another reason why bermuda greens suck in North Texas. Can't out compete the poa.

Bentgrass in North Texas is green, growing, and great all year, just a little slower for a few months in July, August, and September.

Played Iron Horse Friday and overall it's in the best shape of any course in the area I've played this year.  Waterchase is also good, Hawk's Creek and Tierra meh, but Southern Oaks and Texas Star are really tough to enjoy with the greens in their current shape.

Played Tierra Verde Saturday afternoon.  Such a fun layout.  Those greens are just awful though.  I don't remember ever putting on slower greens.  I think if you were putting on a lake of pudding the pudding would be faster.

Word is that TV is closing down in July for a few months to rework all bunkers and do something to the greens.

It is a fun layout but agree about the greens always being slow and i just don't make the trip down there bc of it.
