I definitely recognize the 16th hole in that first picture.  I came to the thread to see about courses that I played back when I came out to Texas for about 18 months to work back in '01-02 and stumbled upon pictures of Pasatiempo.  I last played there at least 25 years ago and got rained on for most of the back-9 and I still loved just about every minute of it, particularly when I par'd 16.  Haha.

I was in Haltom City when I was out there.  I remembered playing at Fossil Creek and Iron Horse about a dozen times.  I know I played at least one other course but for the life of me, I can't remember the name and that's even after using Google and Google Maps.  Hah.

As a regular contributor to this thread living in the DFW, and playing golf with some of the these fine folks in just going over my vacation!!!

Played Rockwood for the first time yesterday and was very impressed with the quality and layout for the $$. The fairway was a little baked out in spots but I can see why everyone raves about the greens...  It's a different game putting on greens nice enough for the grain to actually matter!

Throw some recommendations my way.

Our home course is shutting down for a week on Aug 2nd so the wife and I and another couple are wanting to play 2-3 public courses that week. We live just north of McKinney so we kind of want to keep mostly on the Dallas side of things.

We've played Heritage Ranch, Watters Creek, Pecan Hollow, Frisco Lakes, The Bridges, Cowboys, and Bridlewood in recent years so we're familiar with them but thought we might want to go somewhere we've not played yet.

From reading through this thread, it looks like Texas Star would definitely be an option. What about Trails of Frisco, Grapevine, Indian Creek, or Ridgeview Ranch? Played both Cedar Crest and Stevens Park over 30 years. Are either of them worth considering? Any courses I might be overlooking?

Thanks

Trails of Frisco and Indian creek good tracks. Stick with the creeks at Indian creek

stevens park doesn’t have a range but it and cedar crest are decent and fun.

grapevine takes tee times 6 days out and they fill up fast. Be wary.

Ridge view ranch is a nice track but very crowded with 5+ hour rounds normal.

Links at Waterchase worth a look also

Stay away from Trails of Frisco

Indian creek is fun and challenging and played it last week and in nice shape

Stevens is fun but i bet hard and baked now but that is just a guess

Cedar is closed until September as they lost the greens

Grapevine, good luck getting a decent tee time

Waterchase is great but i think they just punched their greens this week

Mesquite muni might have the best greens in Dallas.  Played there today and they were fantastic.  #1 had some Po Ana but after that great.  I would say they are Waterchase good but faster but you have to put up with a couple rough areas around the course for being a muni.

Give Robson Ranch a try. It’s in a 55+ community so pace can be hit or miss but if you can get an early time I think you’ll enjoy it.

What's going on at Trails of Frisco?

Fossil Creek is in good condition, greens rolling true. They water too much, some fairways are soggy, seems like a waste with this lack of rain recently. Biggest problem however is pace of play, even at 7am I came in at 4:40

4:40 at 7am, holy cow! What time is the first tee time there and how many players did the groups in front of you have?

There was a queue at dawn, shop said they just send people off? Starter showed up as we were standing on the first at 7:10 and told us 4 hour round. I laughed in his face. For whatever reason I can never play there under 4:30 no matter the time. Pretty decent layout and condition though!

Played Rockwood yesterday in FW.

where has this course been all my life?  Probably the fact I live an hour away but wow, what a fantastic course.

Great conditions and under 3.5 hours.

That 3.5 hour round is not standard for out there.  I've had more 5 hour round there than 4 hour rounds.

Hi All,  this Brit is looking for some advice.  Me and the good lady are visiting the DFW area in September for the lady's 60th birthday.  A trip to watch Nascar is planned.  After 40 years marriage, the good lady knows that wherever we go, the golf clubs go, as I like to add good courses to the ever growing played list.  Sadly we will only be in DFW from 22 September to 25 September, but there's still time to get one round in.  We are staying at the Westin Dallas Stonebriar, so the easy thing to do would be to play Stonebriar Country Club.  But is it worth the hefty visitors green fee?  If as a visitor you could play one challenging/interesting/quality/good shape course within an hour's drive of Frisco area, which would you suggest to this old 5 handicapper?  Appreciate any advice you can offer. Colin

How much green fee are we talking about to play Stonebriar Country Club? And it is the Country Club course and not the Fazio resort course?

Thanks for advice on Old American.  I will check it out.  Hotel is telling me that the weekday fee for 18 holes on Country Club course is circa $200.  Of course, the better the course I can get on, the more I expect to pay

Former Stonebriar member here, I believe Westin guests can only play Fazio and not Club course. Both are way over rated. Old American is way better but you have the LPGA VOA Classic at Old American 9/26-10/02 so might be tough to get on and members get tee time access well before the public.

Thanks dfwgolf123.  Must admit that was why I asked the question about Stonebriar.  Everything I could find on the place said it was ok.....but $200 to play the Fazio?   Hmmmm.  I saw that about the LPGA event at Old American when I was going through their website last night.  I suspect you will be right about limited or no access in the days leading up to it.  Shame because it looks pretty good.  Any other suggestions of good places to play in September?  It would be great to play a quality course within say an hour of the Westin hotel before we move on.  I am down to play TPC Louisiana when we get to New Orleans later in the trip....but two rounds are always better than one lol.  Appreciate the help.

Lots of other options around your hotel.  Texas Star, Grapevine Muni, Waterchase(maybe a little too far), Pecan Hollow would all be $80 and under on the weekends.
