Going to be staying a few nights downtown in Dallas in a few weeks. I have time to play one round. What would you guys recommend that wouldn’t be too hard to get onto?

I don’t mind driving a little ways. I was thinking the Tribute, but I can’t make a tee time more than a week out and I’m not sure how tough it will be to get on.

Public course, I recommend Stevens Park. Close, and you get the Dallas feel.

As mentioned above, Stevens Park is a great nearby option. Best value is Texas Star, around a 30 minute drive from downtown, just west of DFW airport. If cost is not a factor, TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas (also about 30 minutes from downtown Dallas) is a great course. I haven’t played it in years, but some friends of mine played just after the recent rains and reported that it was in fantastic shape. Lots of people enjoy Cowboys Golf Club, which is also pricey.

My home course is Twin Creeks. Course is in great shape, and they’re just about finished with a full bunker renovation (went from what was essentially brown dirt to resort looking white sand with a little zoysia strip around them). Huge improvement.

I do the Arcis membership which is fantastic. For $65 a month I get reduced rates of $28 (normal is $45/69).

Plus:

Free range balls

Kids under 17 play free

Tee times 10 days in advance, so access prior to general public

Reduced rates at other Arcis courses

Definitely worth checking out.

Great day with texas turf at Waterchase. Everything in great shape here.

It was extremely wet around the greens when I played there Friday; did they dry up today?  Greens were perfect.

I played Wildhorse North and South yesterday.  Course was in great shape and the greens were rolling great.  There's going to be a women's college tournament hosted by DBU out there today and tomorrow.  There were quite a few women's teams out there getting their practice round in on the West and the North course.

Not an overly hard course especially with no wind like today.  Length is its main defense and the heather depending on if they cut it or not.

I hear two main things:

1. Fun course

2. Can be very windy. Exposed with no wind breaks.

But it gets recommended a lot.

I played Riverchase last weekend and it's not worth the money they charge for a weekend morning.  They charged $60 for a course with greens that hadn't been cut in who knows how long.  I don't mind the layout, but when the greens are like putting on shaggy carpet, it's frustrating.  I really don't play out there much, but it was a group of friends playing, so it was more for the enjoyment of the people that I played out there.  Both Indian Creek courses up the road are a better value of golf compared to Riverchase.

I played Riverchase 2-3 times back 10-12 years ago so I can't speak for how it was lately but it well below average back then. I got to play on someone's else dime but I wouldn't have even paid $25-$30 to play it back then.

Overall, the conditions weren’t terrible.  Fairways and tee boxes were playable. The biggest complaint myself and others had were the greens.  I really don’t mind the layout of the course.

Buffalo Creek today was really nice.  Course in great shape with only 1 green and 1 fairway in not the best shape.  Bunkers have settled down sicne they redid them and were great.  Also teed off at 8 and played in 3 hours as a threesome and one of those was walking.  I was really suprised it was not more crowded.

The new Tierra Verde was pretty good. Greens soft albeit a bit bumpy. New white sand. The deepest bunkers have been shallowed out making it more playable and the greens are all around 20% larger. Cleared out lots of brush too. Really nice job.

When did they redo it? Last time I played out there was about a year ago. Great course but a bit of a drive for me.
