Dallas/Ft Worth Area Courses

Planning on getting out to Dallas/FW area in a few months. Looking for recommendations for some good courses. Sounds like Texas Star and Waterchase are good places to start? Also, I'm a member of a private club here in LA so I may be able to get on to a private course if it isn't super exclusive or anything.

Played Waterchase yesterday.  I've never seen the greens as fast as they were yesterday.  It's like they greased them.  And smooth... Don't be above the hole.

That said, they must have hit the course really hard with water on Friday because the fairways were swampy.  Zero roll and lot of mud balls.

Getting back to golf after my hunting season has come to an end.  Heritage Ranch today was very nice and the greens are perfect.   Nice speed and rolled true.

I know this has nothing to do with DFW golf but have you played your new irons yet?  🙂 Wondering on your thoughts.

I inquired about a Gentle Creek young executive membership in August 2022 and could not believe that they want $20k initiation and $490 per month. 1510045681_Screenshot2023-01-22at1_54_27PM.png.e563bdb23e360812cffaa60bfc584e48.png

Unusual for junior executive members to pay same initiation as full members. But it looks like that club might not be member equity.

What the hell, they must be trying to slow the membership rate with all the influx of people to Prosper/Celina/N. Frisco. Because no way is Gentle Creek worth a $20k initiation, there are plenty of muni's around N. Dallas with a better course and setup than GC.

I'm going to be in Grapevine in a couple of weeks time for a work conference at the Gaylord, and we're lucky enough to have the Sunday free so me and a couple of colleagues are looking for somewhere to get a game - any suggestions?

The Cowboys looks well situated but a little on the expensive side, and I've seen Grapevine GC as well but that looks a little challenging to get a tee time?

The Dee Three - Titleist TS4 9.5 deg, EvenFlow White 6.5 65g, A1 Setting

Henrik - Titleist 917 F3 15 deg, Rogue Max 75x, B2 Setting

The Walking Stick - Titleist 818 H2 19 deg, Rogue Max 85x, B2 Setting

The Interloper - TaylorMade P770 3 iron, S400 Tour Issue, +0.5inch +1 deg loft

The Blades - Nike VR Pro 4 - AW, S400 Tour Issue, +0.5 inch

The Sand Iron - TaylorMade MG2 TW-12 Grind, 56 degree, S400 Tour Issue

The Flopper - TaylorMade MG2 TW-11 Grind, 60 Degree, S400 Tour Issue

The Putter - Nike Method 003 from The Oven

From the Gaylord I'd suggest Bridlewood, Texas Star (if you can get on), or Waterchase.  Rangers is fun but a bit expensive for out-of-towners.  Waterchase is my go to and what I'd choose out of those courses.  I'm sure there are other options as well.  That's just my list.

Cowboys is a fun course.  For the price, you need to plan your trip to get a meal before your round and a meal after to make it worth the freight tho.

Good luck getting on a Grapevine.  If you aren't one of "the boys" you don't get times there.  Haven't played there in probably 6 years now.  Also, I played Waterchase with a couple of Grapevine regulars last week. They said the course isn't in very good shape.  Don't know if that is true or not.  Just passing on what I was told.

Concur about all above.  I would say Texas Star over Bridlewood but that is my personal opinion.

So crazy what they haev going on at Grapevine Muni and the lack of tee times for anyone not on their yearly playing programs.

The easiest way to get a tee time at grapevine is check late the night before for a cancellation. Otherwise once the day is released a week in advance the earliest available is after 2

Thank you for the ideas folks - from a quick Google of the various courses (I'm in the UK) Waterchase looks like the choice - my only concern is we don't have cars so will be getting an Uber to whereever we play, and at 20 miles from the Gaylord Waterchase looks like it might be a bit far, but will run it past my colleagues.

We do have a $100 allowance towards weekend activities if we need to go away, which might make the Cowboys a bit more resonable cost wise.

I've also had the thought that being based in the UK and awake before any of the locals, I might be able to sneak in a booking at Grapevine. However from what you've said, it might get cancelled 🙂

With the Uber charges built in, it looks like Waterchase and the Cowboys (after 2pm when it's $160 + rentals) will be of similar cost so I think they will be the two options I'll share with the group. For my entirely GolfWRX sensibilities - which has the best rental clubs? 🙂

Waterchase does Titleist rentals and Cowboys does Callaway rentals, so up to you to decide from that.  In my opinion Waterchase is a much better golf course over Cowboys, BUT if you are looking at it as a vacation round Cowboys might be the way to go.

Looks like PLP is the same still.  Looks like they are $125 for a weekend morning now.  The own Frisco Lakes and for them to charge $95 is insaine.  Both courses cut the twilight rate in half which seems a little crazy as they should not be charging what they do in the mornings.  I know Frisco Lake is not crowded at all until the twilight rates kick in.

Great info thank you. As we're "Out of Towners" (flying in from the UK and Japan) I've put an enquiry through the Waterchase website for a game around lunchtime if possible, so we'll see what comes back.

Cowboys is fully booked for the day which made the decision much easier 🙂

Played Rangers on sunday and Tierra verde today. Rangers in as good a condition as ever with the greens rolling nice and quicker.

The poa was coming in on Tierra verde. For some reason the back 9 was better than the front. Harder to chip on the bare fairways compared to rangers.

Poa is unstoppable right now in DFW with the cold and wet. Only thing that can stop it now is round-up, but do you dare applying that now when it's about to get warm again? No good answer to that question.

Thanks again for the suggestions folks - just to follow up myself and a friend went for a round at Texas Star on Sunday, and very enjoyable it was too. Nice and open, hospitality was fantastic, and we played with a single who guided us round. First 4 holes were terrible (in terms of my golf) as Jet Lag, rentals and good golf aren't the easiest combination to make work, but the arrival of the beverage cart on the 5th resulted in much better golf, and believe I was 6 or 7 over for the remaining holes.

I really like the Par 5s on the back 9 - 10 and 18 - which took some thinking round, and I liked the big dogleg right on the back 9 (13?).

It was very strange playing a burnt out and muddy course, and the greens - whilst rolling well - were difficult to read, but I would definitely play again.

Rentals were amusing also, with Mavrik irons and woods. The 205 yard 6 irons were always fun, although there was a bit of a gap at the bottom of the bag.
