He goes by Happy, but not his real name.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

According to the website, "Happy" is his nickname, but Gilmore is his real last name.

Man, I better step my game up.

Oh, could there be any future issues with naming all those sponsors? It's probably fine if they are just helping for travel and tournament fees, but would still raise an eyebrow if the kid moves on to college.

I certainly have no problem with parents finding creative ways to support their kid's involvement in sports. Serious junior golf can be seriously expensive.

That being said, something really felt off to me about that website and the whole image it was promoting. For me, the relationship between the kid and his "caddy" initially raised my suspicions.

So, I can't say that the revelations about the father surprise me too much.

I wish I could put my finger on exactly what it is that makes the whole thing so creepy.

Weird Story

Some good perspective juniorgolfmom. Thank you for posting this. I would wager that everyone who participated in this discussion is concerned for the kid, but we weren't really taking his position into consideration. So yeah, you are right, we should be more careful and sensitive in how we talk about it.

But, I would also say that this is a relevant and important topic to discuss in a forum such as this.

Yes I agree a pretty relevant story for two reason's. I originally posted this because I really could not believe someone would use Happy Gilmore in a tournament when it wasn't their real name. I seen his name in some tournaments I was looking at possible attending on the leaderboards. I did a quick search and found the website which had a strange feeling to me. I honestly had no clue the dad was arrested because I was trying to figure out where they actually lived and the news story popped up.

The kid needs to use his real name and get off the Happy Gilmore joke. It's only cute if you're 6.

I always known there are strange weirdo's around kids events but this really hits home why I don't just drop my kid off at tournaments and make a point that someone is there watching them especially true for tournaments you travel to in other states where you don't know many people. This guy could have done what he did at any tournament with girls in it. Since I have girls it is actually quite scary.

I totally agree with you. Really weird. I wish I could figure out exactly what makes that website so creepy. But seriously, it is.

As with most things in life, parents should just let their kids go out and play golf (if that's what the kid wants to do). If the kid is truly good and can put up the scores to prove it, there is going to be opportunity for them. You don't have to shamelessly promote your children and you can't MAKE it happen for them.
