Forgiving irons for beginner

Recommended Posts

Looking to get my younger son some irons as he wants to go out for the HS golf team this spring. He’s been playing basketball since 3rd grade and is a good athlete with good hand eye coordination. All my sets are not as forgiving and made for better players. Also all mine are x flex. Looking for suggestions on a good set of forgiving irons that he can use for the team this school year. They don’t have cuts and I don’t think he will be good enough to play in any matches but practicing everyday and having a golf coach will help keep him motivated. Listening to his dad is not going to work as I’ve found out from basketball. I played in college and he listens to everyone but me and so now I just watch and cheer him on. Thanks in advance everyone.

Lots of choices out their. I really liked the Cobra F8 or F9. My brother in law loves his Mizuno irons not sure which model and they are pretty pricey. I also liked the M4 and M6. You’ll get a lot get a lot of Ping recommendations but they weren’t really good for me but people love them. He really needs to try as many as he can and get him some lessons and see what the instructor might think would be good.

Thanks. Yes I’ll probably go used as he’s going to beat up whatever set he first gets.

To be honest, just get him some players clubs. If he's new he's going to hit bad shots with everything, so might as well teach him hard and then go to easy as he gets better. Theres nothing worse than learning bad habits and what you can get away with with GI's and then getting better and switching to players clubs. I found that out the first time I hit a set of x-flex irons (what I should be playing) after using regular flex for years.

Do you know if he even likes golf enough yet to really stick with it? If you don't... just go on eBay and buy anything within a budget you think is realistic. When I was a kid my Dad brought me to a play it again sports store and at most probably spent like $30 for an entire set. Unless you think he's going to get trolled by kids for having a "junk set" then you could spend something a little more. A few years back I got a set of 5-PW Taylormade RocketBladez for like $175.

Ask him what he wants and then go from there. What clubs a person prefers is heavily influenced by personal preference so why try to dictate? Logic suggests large GI clubs for a novice but the shear number of guys around here that can't break 80 yet play blades is proof that conventional logic goes out the window when it comes to club choice.

This is so true. My middle son is a senior in HS and just started playing late this summer. I let him use a spare set of mine that were the Maltby DBM. Now that he's hooked he's looking at other clubs. His skill level should scream get as much help as possible. However, he just cannot hit any type of game improvement, max game improvement clubs. He doesn't even hit some players clubs very well. What he does hit better and have the least worse misses with are MB's. He says he can't stand looking at anything with larger club head sizes or very thick top lines and I'm guessing based on his shots, it really messes with him. When you averaged out all the shots, the MB's were clear winners and by a lot. Go figure.

+1 to letting the kid pick.

He'll practice more if he likes what he has versus something you decided on for him.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got him a G410 Plus 10.5 for a driver and also a Ventus Blue from a member here. He has one of my older hybrids from TM and my old Rogue 3 wood. I’ve got a few Odyssey EXO and Stroke Lab 7 putters he can try and see which one he likes the best. He uses my old Cleveland wedges. Just looking for a set of irons. I’ll take him to GG soon and let him hit a few and see what helps. He will use my Explanar in the garage and work on his swing for a few weeks and then go over. He says he wants to use the swing tool everyday until he grooves his swing. So hopefully he sticks with it.
