PXG 0811 X+ Prototype Round 1

Got in my second round today with the 0811X and I am amazed that it seems like a better driver for me that the 0811X+ and I hit up on the ball.  I went with 15g back and 5g up front and it was super solid today for me.  I can hit it either way (which is saying a lot for a life-long left player).  I also hit the face center far more often with this than the X+.

I am not sure why, but the slightly taller face seems to help.  The face seems like it has less bulge and roll as well.  Very similar in the more straighter face of the Titleist TS2 versus the TS3.  I need to get out for a round with the X+ using the 5g front weight versus the 2.5g stock weight and see what that does.  The change for the X seems to make me more aware of the clubhead.

Two thumbs up for both of these clubs - they are not going anywhere and I can now sell my TS2, TS3 and Callaway Epic Flash SZ drivers in peace ?

Good stuff. Now that you have played several rounds with these, how do you rate the forgiveness? I know I have asked Eddie, but want to get your take since you have played them more.

I love my low spin Gen2 0811x driver but need more forgiveness. I will be getting the Proto X just to keep the spin low enough, but worry about forgiveness.

Thanks.

Hey everyone,

So I was playing a Callaway Rzer Fit for years, loved it (PX 6.5 shaft, the old blue one...) I bought a Epic Flash Sub Zero with a GD AD TP 7-x shaft in it over the winter this year, and I haven't been able to play enough with it this year... I've gotten out and hit a few times recently and I just don't love the feel of the head. I am just all over the place with it.... seems like everything I hit if a fade/slice... even if I move everything to draw. I really have to try and not slice it. My natural shot is a baby fade, but nothing this out of control. I have been eyeing the proto X for a while and was wondering what you guys think I should play in terms of shaft and if it will be an honest upgrade over my Callaway EF SZ? I honestly don't know if I am an X flex anymore with how the ball keeps sliding right on me. I love the feel of the GD AD TP shaft though, it's so smooth.

Just looking for some honest advice.

Well - I had heard some say that they are not that forgiving and that the X was less forgiving than the X+.  I think they are pretty forgiving - and that is from someone that hits some tee shots very low on the face if I get too quick.  I used to hit it high toe and do that way less with this combo.  Both still go decently when hit poorly.  This is NOT like a blade iron that stings your hand for good measure when you hit one towards the edges of the clubface.

The thing about the X is the face seems a bit higher and you can feel the center impact very well.  I suspect the additional 2.5g has a bit of an effect in that regard.  I need to get the X+ back out there with the heavier front weight to check.

I have never driven the ball better than with these two, and I really liked my TS2, TS3 and Epic Flash SZ drivers.

Just checked PXG website and the gen3 irons are now $299ea which is slightly cheaper than before, i love these irons, cant wait until they take their deluxe price drop.  The proto driver can now be had for $379.  Hurry and get these before the September sales ends.  Once it ends, prices will be lower.  PXG reminds me of the store that has a "Going Out of Business" sign in its window for 5 years.

* Love the Product but their pricing and commercials are not up to spec for a Luxury Brand.

Wow I feel your pain on this one.  I set up a Spec Check and fitting in August and could them until September 12th - the fitting told me that he would guarantee the August pricing unless they went lower and indeed they have dropped ?  I always look at it that I am making a deal today and I need to be happy with it and not look back, even though it would be easy to be pissed when you buy something and it is $100 cheaper the next day.  I am looking at the Gen 3 irons so that drop works well, and the Forged Wedges just dropped as well.

I am taking this whole situation to leg into a brand I would not have considered prior to this "Sale".  I have to say I am happy with the clubs so far - and the Proto drivers are pretty amazing.

I wish the Milled wedges would go cheaper.  They look great!

I doubt they will drop those.  I have a set of those and they are very nice.

I really wonder how low things are going to go with PXG.  I am glad they dropped the Proto driver last month and caused me to experiment by buying the X as well as having the X+ ?

Maybe in October the Milled Wedges will drop - Heros for Thanksgiving Sale, or maybe Christmas ?

Its weird how they are trying to dump the Proto Driver every month by lowering the price but they have not had any weights to purchase so you can actually tinker with the head, not much support for this product....Weights are not that hard to manufacture.

Yeah they are doing that with a product that is supposed to be limited production availability.  The weights are not only for the Proto driver but all of the Gen 2 putters - so why wouldn't there be any available.  I did just check to confirm and they do not have any available.  I wonder why they have not had any - as you say how hard is it to create those weights?

One note on packaging - that I have ripped them for, since it appears they have heard at least my comments ?

I got my last club on order (until my fitting the weekend of the 12th) came today.  It was a hybrid and it came in a smaller black box with a simple folding flap closure, but the big thing was the inside.  I have gotten many clubs with a small amount of black paper and the club and wrench essentially able to move around inside at will.  Well, this package came with foam blocks top and bottom to prevent vertical movement, AND there ware two substantial wads of black paper that totally constrained the movement of the shaft.  SO bravo PXG for upping your game!

I asked today when I scheduled my fitting and they said they have plenty of stock of the Proto driver, so I have the ability to fit into either one in two weeks. Just hope they have the GD AD TP and IZ to demo. Fitting scheduled at PXG HQ.

I’ll pick mine up and they can keep the box(s). Lol. Getting a driver, hybrid, GAP wedge, and putter.

Nice - let us know how the fitting goes and how the clubs work out when you get them.  At least you do not have to watch FedEx.com as your clubs meander to your location ?

Will do. The scheduler confirmed I can be fit into a 44.5” driver my adding weights during the fitting to get a good SW on the spot and they have shorter shafts to to try. I am bringing my Gen2 0811x 44.5 Smoke Yellow with me. Well, my whole bag is coming. Of course, trying Gen3 irons again. Can’t help myself....they scheduled 2 hours for me. Huge fan of PXG and how they treat us Veterans and our First Responders.

They quoted a build time of 10 business days. And my other clubs will be the same because I am getting a Proto driver. This will my second putter fitting and they do an awesome job with that. Spitfire or Bat Attack? Lol

Man I’m pissed. I just  bought the Proto driver, gen 2 fairway, and gen 3 tour irons in June at what I thought was a decent discount direct off of the PXG site. Now they are even cheaper as are the wedges (which I bought as well).

i like them all a lot, but this quick and drastic discount so fast after I bought them just sucks.

So - what do they fo for the putter fitting.  I like my Gen 2 Mini Gunboat, but the initial weight was pushing up near 600g, and even though it is heavily counter balanced with the Lamkin SinkFit grip, it is hard to get longer distances right all the time.  I am scheduled for an hour.  I think I am going to be beat by the end of the hour, because I need to see what is up with my Gen 2 FWs versus my TS2 4W and Mavrik 5W.  When I hit them I smoke them, but I am not very good with finding the face of the Gen2 FWs and I have tried a lot of adjustments.  My main thing is irons and wedges.

Also - thank you for your service!  Even though people do not say it enough, we do appreciate what you and others have done for us to live the way that we do - thanks.

They have an amazing putter fitting area with cameras, and a perfectly flat surface, and the fitter just does his thing. I was fit about a year ago into a Gen2 Gunboat and had my best year putting. Like an idiot I sold it. #GolfWrx

Yes, both fittings I walked out sweating and tired. Haha.

Thanks man. Love my country and have a son in the Air Force and daughter in the Army. We love to support and defend. Bob Parsons does a great job giving back. I play a money game every Sunday and 4 of the 12 guys play some PXG and they feel good about supporting a company that gives discounts to our first responders and military.... and I am the only one that gets a discount out of all of us.

sorry for the rant.

You don't think TM or Callaway will ever go on sale? Possibly after you buy some of their clubs?  Seems maybe a little overboard.  Look at  it this way, you paid a price to get them sooner., still at a discount, correct?  Just like any product, It's most expensive at launch and will eventually go down.

you can't look back as there will always be a better sale eventually....just no one knows when that is.

I think that people have an idea that PXG is a brand that is like Rolex, and I think that PXG is a brand that does what they want and is not tied to the normal things that control other businesses.  Bob Parson's has "apparently" put very few constraints on his team.  They do not release on a given schedule like the other OEMs and they do not have the same type of sales channel either.

I see this latest "sale" as a brilliant move by a rogue company.  I am not using rogue as a derogatory term, but a term of admiration.  I admire the hell out of what they are doing.  Why is it brilliant?  They are grabbing market share and saying - try to follow us.  PXG knows that the other OEMs can not follow them, because they do not have the distribution channel that PXG has.  It would take a long time to put it together as well.  If they did do it, they would obviously be copying PXG and most like PXG would do something else to keep them chasing.

It stings from a customer standpoint and lost value - I get that, but we make a deal with the company when we buy something - if it then goes up in price we are happy because we got a deal, but if it goes down in price we feel slighted and think that we are owed something.  When in both cases "our" deal is exactly the same.

I am a fan at this point and want to see what they do next.  They have responded to complaints with packaging and are a ton of fun to watch.   In many regards PXG stuff is NOT inexpensive, but it seems that way when an iron started at $400 each and is now $299 ?  Again, brilliant IMO...

PXG makes some very good equipment, I love the proto drivers and their woods are as good as anything out there.  I played the Gen3 irons and love those as well, but with the never ending sale, im hoping to pick some up Gen 3s for cheaper once a Gen4 makes it to market.  Love the sugar daddy wedges too but those wedges wear out super quick and they are just too pricey to justify owning.

*overall its a very well made product but its tough to pay premium when you know they are going on sale in the near future.

5-6 rounds in, and I'm feeling quite dialed in with the X+. The most pronounced change for me from my previous club has been stability. Strikes out towards the toe still get up there and turn very little. With my XR16 those are often slinging to the left rough. It takes me very minor adjustments when I want to shape it either direction. The stable, deep head also gives me a lot of confidence to go after some drives too, knowing mishits aren't ending up way off line.

More like the crack of a wooden baseball bat - not that metalic at all.  It is a cool and very solid sound.  More like the ™ Sim woods.
