P770 vs 921 Forged

The 770 are smaller than the 921F.  The 921 are more on par size wise with 790, imo.  They both have 7 iron blade length of 79mm with blade lengths getting smaller as you head towards the wedges. Per Mizunos chart they definitely have more offset than the 790- 2.54mm to 1.7mm in the wedge. When I set them down next to each other in the store, they definitely appear slimmer than the 790 though, due to their thinner top line. They also have a smaller sole than the 790.

I just hit both these models, and a few others, yesterday against my T200.  921 forged was first up and I loved the feel immediately.  Ended up trying P770 which to me felt like absolute garbage, super clicky and not fast feeling at all.  Love the feel of the P790 but front to back dispersion remained terrible even with shafts being equalized the same in each head.  Tried callaway apex pro 21 and couldn't stand the look of it, or the feel... literally one swing and handed back.  Kept going between my irons, 921 forged and 931 hot metal pro all in my exact shaft and length.  Decision really came down to dispersion patterns.  The T200 were the widest circle, HMP came in the tightest first then as I got tired started to spread a little front to back but only by like 3 yds (P790 was 15 yds).  Forged were consistnetly 2 yds shorter than HMP but had the best front to back dispersion, and only spread a little left to right as I got tired.  Ended up picking up 5 yds on average from the t200 with same launch, spin, and landing angle but tightened up dispersion.  I will also say the forged look better to me than the T200, less visible offset to my eye, nice thick topline (which inspires confidence to me), and great feel.  Felt hot enough but still solid.  HMP were just a little round and bulky to justify the whole set, they almost softer but its likely the springy face.  Could see a possible combo with HMP long irons, but I only go to a 5 iron now anyway, so likely just deal with forged which is same loft as my current T200.

Honestly wanted to love the P770 but couldn't ever get it to groove with me.

The p770s took me a long time to get use too. I also went thru some major swing changes at the time of arrival of these irons. I've played a ton of rounds with these and still haven't had a chance to play in true warm weather yet. I have been very critical of these irons in the past. But I will say after getting use to them (smallish, lack of offset, clicky compared to my previous set) I absolutely love them. They are not as forgiving as the 790s, however these clubs just want to go straight, even on mishits. That is such a huge plus for me. I'm starting to love them. Consistent, easy to flight. Look amazing!

I’d like to hear some more comparisons between the 921F and P770. I have a set of P770s on order but may have to order some 921F as well just for fun! I have always had hot spot issues with the JPX in the past. Has that been a issue for anyone?

Well due shaft options I decided to cancel my P770 order and order up some JPX forged with modus 120x hard stepped. I feel like I made the right decision! Shout out to DDs for the awesome customer service!!!

I am considering new irons and P770 and 921F are top of the list although others in the game include King Tour MIM, Srixon ZX5 and 7, and Callaway Apex Pro and Ping G500 and i210. Now I hate offset, having grown up in the 80's with blades and I jst don't think how offset is measured can be consistent. According to the websites the Srixons and Mizuno's have more offset (I have converted all to mm's - I work in metric) but looking at them I just don't believe the numbers. I know there is a set formula for offset but what do others think?

A few months ago I got fit at Club Champion the P770 did not have a great dispersion for me and the P770 felt more like a cast iron then forged, even though they look great.  Tried a mess of irons, that day the 921 Forged and Tour, the Forged and MP20mmc had similar dispersion issues, not left to right but I’d occasionally get a flyer or a dead shot.  The 921 Tour felt great and had a great dispersion, but ultimately went with the Srixon ZX7, great dispersion and a degree stronger loft then the Tour, gave me a few more yards.  Without losing dispersion, peak height and keeping a great spin rate, picked up 6-7 yards on the Tour.  The ZX7 actually felt softer then the 921’s which surprised me and were definitely more forgiving then the Tour and closer to the 921 Forged in that aspect, while having a slimmer top line.  Similar distance from the ZX7 and Forged, just better dispersion from the ZX7.  The Titleist T100’s were crossed off fairly quickly, the Callaway Apex Pro 21 were also nice, just didn’t go quite as far as some of the others for me and had a slightly larger dispersion circle.  Definitely recommend trying a few irons before buying or get fit, irons play so differently for everyone.

The Srixon ZX7 definitely appear to have very little offset, the 921 Tour also look to have very little offset, the 921 Forged look noticeably more offset but still not in a not nice to look down at way.  The ZX5 definitely looked and felt more offset to me, didn’t like them.  The Apex Pro was great looking, unfortunately I hit it slightly shorter then some of the others with a worse dispersion then two others.  The Ping’s looked offset, even though Ping claims fairly low offsets, just might be the way their hosel is set up.  The p770 looks like a chunky blade at impact, ZX7 has a thinner top line but a bit longer.  The 921 Forged is bigger and more similar to the ZX5 in size but a little less offset looking then the ZX5.  Worth giving all a try and seeing what works for you.  I picked up the ZX7’s, my brother the Apex Pro and frequent golfing buddy the 921 Tour.
I also think there is no standard between manufacturers for offset and lie, at Club Champion, Srixon ZX7 6iron 1 degree flat of the Titleist T100 and 1degree upright from the 921 Tour, making a 2 degree swing between the 3 manufacturers.

Totally agree. Gonna be hard pressed to find a hollow headed iron that’s gonna feel as good as the 921F. In my opinion anyway. If 770 felt as good as it looked it would be a huge hit.
