Ping PLD Prime Tyne??

I absolutely love this putter, unfortunately, I've been hit with the loose head/rattle issue as well. A shame cuz I was putting really well with this putter, especially after throwing on a SS Pistol GT Tour. I don't have a lot of confidence in Ping to really fix this issue. Do you guys think this something my local Pro Shop/Club Builders can take care of? Also the turn around would be a lot faster.

I tried that at first - they took the head off, then immediately said it was a design issue and sent it back to Ping.

  • 3 weeks later...

Last week I noticed a odd feel with my prime tyne 4, this week it felt worse as I now noticed the head was loose. After searching the web I saw all these posts. So off to the “club garage” I went….

After 2 heat & cool sessions with my torch the head was free. After inspection it was apparent the assembly at the factory was not done at 100%. The head is steel, the shaft hosel is aluminum. The hosel is coated with a anodized primer then anodized black. Epoxy doesn’t stick to anodizing. All the factory clear epoxy picked off easily. I sanded the hosel down to raw aluminum as well as the very bottom, one of the photos show that black anodizing still was where it was trying to bond, but didn’t.

The head was cleaned carefully & all the rust that developed also was removed due to moisture seeping in where the was a small gaps. I repaired it with GW beaded epoxy & made sure there was not any gap where water could seep in again.

I LOVE PING equipment & am not bashing them on this, it was a small oversight that they are addressing.

Even though they have incredible tolerances & machining, the anodizing & epoxy causes the failure. Hope this helps someone!

Yikes I’d be pissed if I spent what those  cost then having to deal with a rusted out hosel due to poor workmanship.

Amazing work, well done one address the situation, having the setup and tools to work on it. Simply amazing. If this problem happens to me my only recourse is back to shop I bought it.

Update from my use, I am enjoying the putter more and more. Guys gag when they find out the price. Longer putts are taking a bit of time because I change stroke technique.  More putts are falling which is awesome for my confidence.

Seeing more of these putters on sale on Amazon and Kijiji. I am not promote or selling, just an observation on the crazes prices I am seeing. Plus a lot of left handed and 34 inch length. I would think 34 not the ideal length for a lot of players. One putter had nicks in the head and shaft, definitely worth less and how do you nick a putter practice indoors.

Anyone else with updates.

I've gotten close to 40 rounds in with the putter and still no rattle. Anyone else used it more than me and haven't gotten it? Good to hear issue gets fixed after sending it back to Ping.

I've had mine since early December and have played and practiced with it extensively and haven't had any issue thus far. Now that I've jinxed it, I'm sure it'll go to pieces the next time I take it out of the bag.

A couple weeks ago I called PING to order a replacement cover for my prime tyne 4. They told me they don’t sell them. I insisted that they double check because a club at this price should have them in stock. They did call me back to say sorry, we don’t offer a replacement….

Can someone from PING explain why you have 1000’s of covers offered on the website, but nothing available for their most expensive retail offering?

It was a limited release. They made enough covers for the number of putters produced. They’re not going to make extra replacement covers for a putter they are not producing any longer...

Mine is going back for the rattle for the second. My dealer has returned 7-8 of them. One was redone 3 times and finally returned.Very poor product. It loosens deep in the head where the hosel mounts. Th magnet in the cover also slid  making it unusable. This after only 20 games since the redo.

Revisiting this thread as I have grown interest in a not so large mallet with the "wings".  I was wondering if any differences between the Limited Prime Tyne 4 vs PLD Prime Tyne 4 vs the most current 2022 Prime tyne (two tone color)?  Any issues with long term durability given the comments of the "rattle of the head".   Thanks.

The biggest difference between the Limited Prime Tyne 4 (2021 release) vs others (i.e. PLD Prime Tyne and regular Prime Tyne) is going to be a smooth face on the Limited Release vs. milled on the PLD release and insert on the regular prime tyne. The limited release is also all black as opposed to a white site line on the others. Graphics on the bottom are also different. The Limited Release and PLD version are the same head size. i believe the regular Prime Tyne is slightly larger.

I've owned two limited release models (i love the smooth face feel compared to the milled version) - the first one needed to be sent back to Ping to fix the rattle in the head. came back and no issues. the second one hasn't had any issues - i bought second hand, so not sure if it had an issue and was fixed or if it just never had an issue. Durability is fine and Ping will fix any rattle head issues really quickly.

hope that helps.

Any one know if it’s possible to swap the stock shaft for a BGT stability tour? I don’t have stuff to do it myself so would be relying on a shop/store somewhere. I read somewhere ping does a unique tip diameter and you have to shaft aftermarket shafts.

yes, this is possible - i don't know how as i bought one second hand with a stability tour - but it is possible.

did you ever call and ask Ping? they are usually pretty good about answering this type of stuff.

Yes, and they were surprisingly unhelpful. I think because of Ping proprietary standards.
