Played my first round with the Ping Tyne PLD today. It’s truly a great putter, I was worried about the smooth face but it’s surprisingly forgiving. Really loving this putter.

Just FYI my head came loose a second time - left it at the clubhouse for the ping rep, but think I'm done with it.

I don't understand how the head can keep coming loose. It looks like your standard over-the-hosel shaft insertion. So either someone is botching the epoxy job or they machined the hosel stem incorrectly? That's bizarre. My money is on some bad epoxy.

 

If you've ever pulled a head from a shaft, you'll probably know that not every epoxy job is the same. I always use a small butane torch to heat the hosel and then pull from the grip end. The last one I did was my Bettinardi SS 17. After heating that one for 30-60 seconds or so, it still took a lot of twisting to get the epoxy to break and the head out of the shaft. Come to think of it, I also pulled a Ping Heppler ZB3 head about a year ago. That one was a very quick 20 second heat and the head slid right out. Maybe Ping needs to work on their glue situation?

I have all ping clubs so I’m a little biased. The putter is beautiful to look at. I like the overall weight and size. It’s a little firm off of the face. I really like the grip. And the fact that I found it at a ping authorized dealer new for $380 was a bonus. I wasn’t even looking for a putter but I had to buy it.

That 2 line review basically sums up the putter from all I've read, I haven't tried it as it doesn't match my preferences but if I see one in person I'm gonna roll it.

Well, when the head stays firmly attached, I love it.  Definitely unique looking, a smaller profile (I'm still gaming the original sigma when my head falls off), and a firmer feel off the face.  I thought the black line would be a visibility issue but its still distinctive enough.

Mine hasn’t had any problems with coming apart.  I wish it was a little bit lighter though as it’s about 20 g heavier than my preferred weight.

I've played 15 rounds with it so far. I really like the compact size and feel. Haven't had any rattling issues and hope that doesn't happen to me.

I've had mine since the jump and still love it. I do notice a little rattling, but the head hasn't come off. Has anyone reached out to Ping about this issue?

 

Edited to add: I emailed Ping to see how they were handling this, and they said that they were aware of this issue and would fix any putter that was rattling or lost a head. You just need to contact them and share the serial #.

Bought the last one today in Canada for sale at retail. Should I keep it and take the plastic off this bad boy, return it, or save it and sell it for my boys college fund? Only $616.00 at golftown.

@JimboApexNot the last one in Canada at retail. My local GolfTown has one here and another at a different store. Keep it and play it. It’s a great putter. They won’t go up that much in value.

I think Ping's Coastal Mallet Putter cover might fit better. It's on their website and available at some retail shops.

Got my PLD last week and have had it out for one round so far.  I previously was gaming the Tyne 2021 and while I really like that putter, the insert could be tough to judge on faster greens, which is why I wanted to get my hands on a PLD.  The shape has been the best for me to get the ball online and near the hole consistently.  The PLD looks a touch smaller than the 2021 with a thinner topline and fractionally shorter fangs, as well as a black alignment line opposed to the white on the 2021.  The white line does seem to be better to my eye but its nothing I can't deal with.  

 

So far the PLD is doing what I wanted.  It's been more consistent on the speed especially on the long putts and gives great feedback across the face, you can tell when it's not pured.  

 

As far as a cover, I was able to grab the LE Masters Pingman cover that Ping put out a couple months ago, fits a little sloppy, but protects the putter just fine.  Will report back when I have more rounds on it.

Thanks Doucer. The golftown website says out of stock. No more in Winnipeg. If it's at your store it's maybe the last one. Individual stores aren't reporting what they have left online. 

 

I have had a chance to practice with it. I enjoy everything about it. I thought the grip would be too narrow but it feels fine. I wanted a putter with no insert, ball rolls nice, I like the smaller head vs these over sized mallet type putter. Its just the huge price tag.

I did ask if they could put a plumber’s neck on one and that was a no go.

I think you are right about Golftown. I find their inventory system a bit lacking. Glad you decided to give it a try. It’s a great putter but very expensive. If you decide to sell it at some point you will always get your money back.

I have thought about this.... I would love to put some TR grooves on this thing.  I am sure it would then have to be completely refinished as well....  If Ping won't do it, I am sure another custom putter shop would... I will actually give this more thought as I picked up a Spider X and seem to putt better with it.  Was thinking of moving the PLD, but I may reconsider.
