Who will be the Masters Honorary Starters in 30 years?

This has been a really fun and interested thread. It seems like it boils down to three main categories. Personally I think it would be fun to see at least one player from each but who knows what we'll get in the next 10, 20, and 30 years. Augusta has always done things their own way after all!

Group 1 - all around great players - Watson, Faldo, Tiger, Phil, etc.

Group 2 - players who are "Augusta famous" - Couples, Mize, Langer, Bubba, etc.

Group 3 - great players who have not (or yet to) actually win at Augusta - Rory, Norman, Els, Anika, etc.

This is an excellent summation of this two-page long discussion!

Honestly. I think they already screwed it all up.

Gary and Jack should have asked ANGC to add Watson. He is in his 70's and post Jack dominated the tour and won 2 green jackets...then,, as Jack and Gary transitioned out they could have asked Faldo and Langer to join Watson...

I think we then would have seen a bit of overlap moving forward...Phil would replace Watson (the eldest)  and then Tiger would come in for Faldo or Langer...and when the final leaves, I actually think DJ comes in. He has a masters (and could win more). No player in his generation is going to win as many tournaments overall, he grew up an hour away from Augusta. It makes too much sense (and he is about to be 36, which means in 21-30 years he's be a great age to be a starter).

I know this is 4 years old, but most of our comments aged like milk. TW isn't going to be able to swing a club in 2050, he's going to be lucky if he isn't in a wheelchair. Everyone hates Phil, and I can't imagine anyone in the next 10-20 years asking him to do anything at Augusta, and in 2050 he'll be about to turn 80.

We're probably looking at Scheffler and Bubba Watson or Zach Johnson by 2050. Faldo and Jose Olazabal almost certainly jump in at some point, maybe Langher.

If Phil is unofficially blackballed, Bubba probably is too.

I'd imagine Crenshaw takes over for Jack. Langer takes over from Player. Faldo takes over for Watson.

After that, it's chaos. Maybe Jose Maria takes over for Crenshaw. Tiger if he's physically able can take over from Langer.

Phil and Bubba are the next logical options but outside a merger and a very public mea culpa, I don't think they'll ever get the nod.

After that is anybody's guess. Scheffler eventually but that's 20+ years away. If Jordan gets a 2nd he's all but guaranteed a spot. Could Adam Scott find a miracle in his 40s? Will Rory ever put it together on that course?

Tiger's broken body and Phil and Bubba's heel turn has really muddied the succession plan.

The difference between Phil and Bubba has been the ability for one of them to keep their mouth shut and just play golf.  Not so much for the other.

If nothing else, it will be cool to have Crenshaw, Faldo, Langer, & Olazabal in there. I’m not sure what happens after that.

In 30 years.   Assuming they’d need to be past their competitive playing career , age 65 up to say 85?   So in thirty years that’s someone who is now between 35 and 55 and has won at least one masters and had a “good” career.
So anyone over about 55 today, probably not around….

but maybe there’ll be a few,

Maybe? Yessir!

I can see Faldo, Langer  and Jose Maria be the next batch, then adding Tiger and Phil in the next phaset.  Not really sure who would fit in after those two, there was a pretty big drop off after those two.   Rory would probably slot in at some point assuming he can win one, and the you have Scottie from the current generation.

2 time winner Crenshaw will be in there mixed with Tom Watson after Player & Nicklaus are gone. And then we have the European trio mixed in with Crenshaw.

I didn't think about Ben.  I kind of assume if they wanted him as a starter, he'd be there already given he's close in age to Watson.

I am not sure they have ever had more than 3 guys in the starter role. Jack & Gary are sneaking up there in old age. I would think one of those spots will become available in the near future.

But Crenshaw already has a pretty important role as the host every year of the Champions Dinner. This was passed down to him from Byron Nelson. I am guessing Crenshaw will pass it down to Speith or Scheffler when the time comes.

Watson was pretty dang great. 40 PGA Tour wins and 8 major championships.

Phil has 44 PGA Tour wins and 5 major championships for comparison.

Where have you been, Phil is at 6 majors 45 wins. 😉

What's interesting about Phil is he also has 12 runner up finishes, only Nicklaus has more.

I don't know where exactly Phil ranks myself, but he is certainly up there.

Just noticed that post was old, my bad!

Gary may have another 10 years in him. I'm not sure how long Jack will want to do it. Sadly, he was looking pretty old this year.
