Advice - New Level vs Sub 70

Hi Everyone,

I am looking into new irons for myself for my birthday coming up in February and currently game the Cobra Amp Forged with the orange badging.  I have had them for about 6 years now, and would like something new.  I have them paired with KBS Tour stiff shafts and they are pretty heavy.  I used to be in better shape before my two kids and could swing them easy, but am looking for a little ligher and more forgiveness.  I usually shoot in the low 90s with some sprinkled in 80's and of course once in a blue moon horrible days.  I love the Cobra Forged Tec, but that might be out of my price range.  I have done some research and like the Sub 70 699 irons and the New Level modb-1.  I like the look and forgiveness.  They are a little different lofts than what I currently game, but I can adjust of course.  I also like the Haywood signature irons.  I have looked at these for price and like the small shop idea and direct-to-consumer.  I am open to anything, but let me know what you think about those I have mentioned or any other ideas you have for me.  I am also 6'2 and play 1/2 over and 2 degrees up with my current setup.  Thanks

Highly recommend Sub70. The owner called me to verify my order before being built when I made a mistake. Sent him an email about shafts late one afternoon and he gave me a call the next day (week of Christmas no less). The clubs are well built, and customer service is fantastic. You won’t regret Sub70 irons, and they seem like genuinely good people to boot. As an added bonus, turnaround time from order to clubs was a little over a week.

I have the New Level 623-M in my bag and they were very affordable even though I have the MMT which are either the most expensive or 2nd most on their list of shaft options.  New Level gives you the most shaft options out of the other DTC companies you mentioned.  You can contact Eric, the founder and owner, and do a consultation/fitting with him over the phone as well.  Their customer service is second to none.  I would recommend trying their demo program to see which irons you like the best.

I got a set of the modb-1’s for a friend of mine.  They are quite nice.   Definitely a chunky iron but very forgiving and nice looking.  That said, the sub70 699 look really nice as well.  I like the combo set with the utilities and the ability to do a 699/699pro combo.  They are also the cheapest option...I’d look at the shafts offered and see how the prices stack up in the shaft you want.  I doubt you can go wrong, especially at the price point.

since you are quite tall, I assume you have no issue with distance. Then, modb-1 could be too long for you. 902 is their best selling model and you can try it through their demo program. If you don't mind traditional loft, hogan's ptx pro is not bad at all.

Do you think I could handle the 902. I emailed them all the same info I wrote here and they said the modb-1. Thanks

Would you recommend the 699 for me then? Thanks

My son has the Sub70 939X fairway and hybrid and they perform as well any other similar clubs on the market. He’s been happy with them.

I just wish their MB’s and CB’s looked like their 699 lineup. I can’t stand the look of the fish scale milling on their MB/CB models.

The clubs perform, and on customer service alone I will recommend the brand to all my friends. The first shafts didn’t quite work for me (my fault for trying new shafts without enough testing) but they happily took them back and are sending me a new set with better fitting shafts for my swing. They’ll call with updates instead of sending an email. It’s the little things that matter.

As other said lots of good options in this DTC space. Try them all out if you can.

I was similar to you, had Cobra Forged tecs (2016) model and went with the 699 pros.  Needed more forgiveness, better ball speed across face.    Demo'd the 699 and decided to pick up used set of the pro version with modus stiff. Check out the SUb 70 thread for more info and comparison pics.  Long story short love the irons and my GIRs have improved since putting them in play.  Especially with the 5 iron 6 iron on par 3's.   Also putting in the set Gap wedge vs a blade wedge has done wonders for my approach shot GIRs.   Demo the hybrid also, for me the 4 hybrid has been nothing short of amazing and I have hit some par 5's in 2 that I never did before.  Good luck

I’m a sub70 fan boy... their customer service is great, backed by quality equipment... Jason is a good dude and fun to talk to. They are definitely worth looking at.

I haven’t tried anything from New level, but have heard good things.

Based on your scoring range I think the 902s would ask a bit too much from you. I keep a close eye on the Sub70 and New Level threads here and see miles more feedback on the Sub70 699 line than the New Level equivalent. If demo programs are not an option for you, I would lean towards Sub70. Both companies are very responsive but I will add to others’ praise for the Sub70 team. They should be able to take care of you quite well.

Do you use the Gap Wedge for pitch/chip shots around the green? I use my gap wedge extensively around the green and worry the 699 Pro set wedge may be to big and hot faced around the greens. Today I use player’s CB and use the set wedge.

I use my 54 or 58 around the greens mainly.  Or I would use a 9 iron for a long bump and run.  The gap wedge can be used for straightforward square face shots I think but it's not a normal shot for me I prefer higher loft around green.

Throw another vote in the hat for Sub70 from me as well.  Although my 639 cb/mb combo set is not currently in the bag, my opinion is very high on them.  My 699-U pro on the other hand has not left the bag.  Fantastic utility iron.  And like many others here, I’ve been on the phone with the CEO Jason multiple times and he’s just a great guy deal with as is their whole operation in my experience.

Interesting that you have the KBS TGI shafts in your irons.  I asked Eric about them and he very tersely emailed me that those KBS shafts were not available.

They may not be an option anymore.   I purchased mine in July 2019

I purchased a New Level MODB-1 7 iron and wanted to demo a Sub 70 699 - 7 iron to try. Used their demo program but they only send out a 9 iron in 699 and a 5 iron in 699 hybrid iron. I liked the looks of the new level better but sub70 still a nice club. Tested the new level against my srixon 545 7 iron. I know they are not the same, but was hitting the new level very well. Picked up a few yards, maybe total was 160-165. Since Im  now 66 yrs old, lost some speed but was expecting any more. About a 10-12 handicap. New Level has used clubs, trade ins for sale, number of different shafts and conditions. Either one looks like a good company making a very good product.
