Game Improvent irons with tradtional lofts

Unless you start at 6 you should be ok.

Why is that  problem ? Just refer to your club by their loft and making sure distance gapping is okay.

People forget that "loft jacking" gave rise to the club we now know as the Gap Wedge. it used to go straight from PW to SW, but PW lofts grew stronger and stronger over time until the need for an entirely new club arose to fill the (dare I say it) gap.

I understand OP. When I got back into golf I had an older set that started at 48 for PW. I’m now playing a set with a 44 PW and I’ve filled the gap with a Vokey 48. It does the job but it definitely feels different to a classic 48 PW which matches the iron set. It feels more like a second gap wedge, because it is I guess. Also even though I know each club is one club longer (PW is like old 9, 9 is like old 8 etc), I find that I still have to really think about which club is which, and that’s a slight distraction I don’t really need. I can’t seem to ever get used to the new way. When I’m playing traditional lofts the distances are automatic because that’s what I’m used to. One less thing to think about in an already complicated game.

It is strange, I know. But on the other hand you don't need so many longer irons at the top of the bag.

I play 7W, which makes my 6i (26,5 degrees) the longest iron.

Not too long ago, I used to carry a 3i...

 

With fairway woods/hybrids replacing long irons, and using specialty wedges up to 46 degrees, we could see many bags with only 4 "set irons" 🙂

I played a 48* PW from 1991 until 2019 or so.  What I began to find......

 

Hard to find a 48* PW anymore, while I am steep bending some of those irons resulted in other things I did not like.  Spin numbers being off and the like.  I had to re-think my lofts/gaps/distances when I went to a new set, there was just no getting around it. My sets through the years tended to have a 36* 7 iron, so I had all sorts of issues.

 

My current PW is 46*, my GW is 50*, then 55* then 60*.  Most clubs that are equivalent to the 919 tours have a 7 iron that is close to your required 34*.  However, I will say this.  DO NOT BUY BECAUSE OF WHAT THE SPECS SAY.  I have yet to see a set of irons from a manufacturer that are right on spec.  Every single set I have had to put on the mitchell and bend loft or lie or something similar.  My current Srixon's only one club was off, however I hit all of them on the course to get ideas before I bend.  I adjust shaft length, loft and lie to get my desired characteristics as far as launch window and yardage gapping.

 

All this to say do not get too hung up on the specs, VCoG in every iron set is a little different.  So even if your let's say 7 iron head is exactly 265 grams, and your new one is 265 grams and you put the same exact shaft in them you will have differences is distance, launch window and gapping.  BBtG measurement could be different, insertion depth could be different, and the VCoG is probably different.  I have seen two clubs weighing within a gram of each other with the same loft produce 5 yards of difference on well struck shots with the same exact shaft in them.

I prefer traditional lofts as well.  iblades were some of the easiest to hit that I tried at the time. 
 

I mean to me anything that is cavity back could be considered game improvement.

Actually, the gap was always pretty big between the 48* PW and the 56* SW.

Yeah it's not a new thing.

 

When I got my TA845s in 1990 I added a 52* wedge to go between PW and SW.

See below. CB Pro Tungstens have 22* 4i / 34* 7i / 46* PW. And, four-degree loft increments in between.

 

Also, look at Ping G-series irons with Retro-Spec lofts. For example, G425 Retro has 32.3* 7i / 47* PW.
