Couple of million. Dude was #11 in the world and made 3 plus million the season before the switch.  He hasn’t made a million in winning in either season since and is ranked 101 and not even playing in majors without a special invite.

He's not getting a couple of million for a ball deal, I can assure you.

Looking at the Titleist new releases popped another perspective into my head. Many pros switch up their irons with each release cycle of new clubs. How is this all that different from changing manufacturers? So if a player is putting new irons in the bag every year or so, what would it matter if they are made by one manufacturer or another?

The manufactures show them trying new things... often they do not go in the bag until they've tested for a long time or finally give in.  Once guys get dialed on something, they don't change that often, they just advertise that they do.  Driver changes happen more frequently, but not irons and wedges.

And they have every possible measurement of the old stuff they like, and remake them to exactly the same specs.  That's the only way they can typically get something in the bag.

But when you switch manufactures, you're kind of screwed and have to start over.  Some of the bigger names can have them create prototypes that are more similar to their last companies set.  And sometimes they are welcome changes and they just take to the clubs.

Like when Rahm was interviewed at the US Open and talked about how he's more or less tortured the staff at Callaway for some time to make him a putter that he likes (aka something like his old putter from TM) etc.

@jons1 shouldn’t each player know what their exact specs are? So if a change in manufacturer does happen they have no to provide to the new builder.

Many companies have similar design philosophies that carry from line to line, so changing within the same company with each release is less impactful than changing the whole brand. Everything from aesthetics to shaping and profile to CG placement and material tech, these things can change quite a bit from company to company but much less so from model to model within a single one.

I get that but change is change. I guess my point is this issue is kinda overstated.

Excerpt from article on Steve Stricker's World Match Play victory in January 2001:

For Stricker, this is a nice comeback for a player who only five years ago was considered a rising star after two victories in 1996.With success came riches, and with riches came trouble. He got rid of his Peerless irons to sign a lucrative deal with Taylor Made, and the new equipment made him blink. A switch to Ping didn't help, and now Stricker has no club deal and likes it that way.In his bag this week were clubs made by Callaway, Cobra, Ping, Titleist and Odyssey. Worth noting is that the driver (Callaway Big Bertha, a dinosaur in today's high-tech market) and the putter (Odyssey) were the same ones he used in 1996.

I think it's long been taken down, but Peerless went hard negative on Stricker on their public website.  I think it was around 1999 or 2000.  The site referenced a player that was in the top 20 in the world playing Peerless irons, then dropping out of the Top 100 when he stopped.  It was a pretty bitter message.  And, I think it was right on the catalog webpage of the irons Stricker used to use...

I think peerless was Arnie's company

While not a changing brands story here is a fun article regarding Chase Koepka having his clubs and clothes lost by the airlines in a 2 day invitational played in Pittsburgh starting today. Had to borrow clubs and clothes. He is 1 shot off of the lead after 2 rounds. Nothing was the brand he plays. Edit: Appears he is now a Titleist/Mizuno player. His clubs were found in time for the third round. He now has a 1 shot lead going to the final round Wednesday.

These guys are good and can play well with most anything.

Very few pros (male or female) that go to Callaway or PXG maintain or improve their results.

I will be shocked if Rahm stays in the top 5 or even top 10 of the world golf rankings this season.

Just seeing this thread for the first time and man did this one age like fine wine 🤣
