I learned to play with 3,5,7,9.  I didn't even know what a wedge was.

I wonder how many clubs the average tour player uses during any given round. I'd imagine most rounds they do not use all 14.

I actually was bored when quarantined a couple of weeks ago and went through my ShotScope rounds of this year (~20) and I did not find a single round, that I hit more than 12 different clubs. Actually, in those 20 rounds, I only hit 5 6 irons.

I played with a guy for years who, especially over the winter, alternated between carrying odd or even number irons. He had all the shots!

@philleeeeepAgree with you. My guess=The 52* might be bent weaker (eg 50-“54”-58?).
