Put me down as someone who thinks the ZX7 feel better and are more forgiving than the 785.  But it’s really a very minor difference.

Feel is subjective and hard to compare. Forgiveness is easier to compare and I think reintroducing the Tungsten weighting has means the ZX7 is more forgiving even though the blade length is a touch shorter

Ok, @BallerNate, I appreciate your enthusiasm about the ZX7 but I have to admit after demoing today with a couple different shafts, I am going to be your first person who says, the ZX7 are not significantly more forgiving than the 785.  I'm sorry man!!!  LOL

Having played the 785 more than once, I am familiar so I only demoed the ZX7 with the Modus 120s and 120x.  I thought the 120x could be my next shaft, but it seems the 120s is a better fit at the end of the day according to the numbers.  I also demoed a set of blue dot iBlades with the S300 against the ZX7 and found no discernable difference in forgiveness there either, and the numbers with the 120x and S300 were very close.  The 120s netted me a few more carry yards but the overall dispersion of the iBlades was better.   Dare I say, I preferred the feel as well... Don't flame!!!

Side by side, the 785 looks slightly larger than the ZX7 and the finish looks a little more dull.  I prefer that also.  Soles are slightly more narrow on the 85, too.  Overall, the ZX7 is really nice and I can see why people love them but for me, the 785 is the better of two, winning on feel as well.  I'd even say that my 745/Modus 105 combo feels softer than the ZX7.  I was expecting much more, maybe that was the problem but I was kind of underwhelmed unfortunately.  Glad I scratched the itch but I think I could wait to see what's next for Srixon.

Nate, I hope you go low as heck with these though, I can see why you're a fan even though they weren't for me.

100% agree with everything you said here.  Owned both and split mine z585 4, z785 5-8 and z forged blades 9 and PW.  This blends well with lofts and feel was much better with 785's/z forged.  I did not see much difference in forgiveness.  If you miss a long iron, you miss it.

Just recently compared Zx7 and z785 on course both with same shaft. For me I had better turf interaction with z785 and did not notice any difference in forgiveness. I think both are exceptional and you really can’t go wrong with either one.

If you can get a deal on a set of z785 go for it. But otherwise zx7 are absolute beauties, great combination of feel, profile and forgiveness. Can't go wrong with either.

I am handicap 11 (trending towards single digit). I have a fitting session next week where ZX7 irons are on my radar. If I can hit them well, I will probably go with a ZX7/ZX5 combo. Are there huge differences in terms of forgiveness and distance in the long irons?

I play a combo splitting at the 7i. Most report and I would agree, the 7xs are very playable up to the 5 and even to the four.

Before ordering the full zx7 set, I obviously tried the zx5 in the long irons and thought about ordering a combo, easier to hit and elevate were the key point I noticed, liked them but was not "it" for me. In the end even the 4 iron(zx7) felt great, dispersion, spin and distance wise. So I went ahead without hesitation and ordered the full set. The combo set is very popular (for a reason) and the zx5 in the 4-5 or even 6 would still be a great choice, just not for me I really love the zx7 look at adresse and the feel, the zx5 are definitively chunkier. Just go ahead and try them at your fitting, can go wrong with either. I would also be on the look out for the 223 and t100 these are nice irons too. I've been fighting the urge to buy a set of 223 just to compare them to my zx7 but must resist 😅.

Unfortunately I only have the possibility to be fitted of a mat. Is the V-sole a gimmick or does it really improve the turf interaction from your real world testing?

I've tested many sets and the v sole seems to suit me. Would I be able to play anything that doesn't have the V-sole, definitively.  Does the v-sole affects my turf interaction, I would say yes to a certain extend. What i'm trying to say is that for me it's not a make it or break it design, I could play with or without.

Ok thanks - let's see if I can feel any difference between the ZX7 and Pro223 of a mat 🙂

I do not believe the vsole its self alone would make you hit it thin. Probably need some little tune up in your swing 😀

Yea I agree. Im pretty shocked how many of you are saying you have played both and went back to the 785s. To me the zx7 look way more forgiving than the 785 but that’s just my 2 cents

Agree with you, I’ve got ZX7’s, best irons I’ve ever played, truly mean that, and I’ve played several different Mizuno MP models over the years, AP2’s,

and BluePrint’s….just love everything about the ZX7’s

What type of swing fits the v-sole? Steep with deep divots?

I’d say they are good for steeper swingers.  I hit a pretty high ball naturally and take a good size divot.  Love the turf interaction with these, can’t say I remember digging too deep on a swing with these.  But I’d bet they would work just a well fit a sweeper or picker, they are just a good solid iron all the way around.

I’m in the ‘21 TM P790 now for more forgiveness, but sometimes feel like I miss the V-Sole.

Yeah, there’s definitely been moments that I missed the V-Sole, and the P790’s have been a big adjustment. Now that I’m getting them dialed in they’re starting to be very good though. We’ll see how it goes.

good luck with that. I tried the same experiment and it failed badly. The 790 could not compare to the zx5 in any way

All about personal preference and what works best for each individual at the end of the day.

The biggest adjustment for me so far has been ball position, and just getting everything dialed in for my swing. The P790's have shown some very positive signs for me though so far, so we'll see.
